Calvin Finishes Fifth in Final Learfield Sports Director’s Cup Standings

For the 16th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final NCAA III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, finishing fifth in the nation in Division III in 2010-11 with a total of 762.25 points. Calvin’s point total and its (placement) finish is its highest-ever in the 16 years of the competition. Calvin is one one of only six schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level. Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga. Williams College, Mass., defended its title as the best athletics program in the nation in Division III by winning its 15th U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup with 1,147 points.
Oosterhouse and Bressler Named Capital One Academic All-Americans

Calvin College seniors Melissa Oosterhouse and Monica Bressler have been named Capital One Academic All-Americans in the women’s college at-large division as selected by the College Sports Information Director’s Association of America (CoSIDA). Oosterhouse has been named to the first team while Bressler has been named to the third team. The Women’s At-Large program for Academic All-America includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, tennis and water polo.Combined, Calvin has now had its athletes receive CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades 89 times including 58 times in the last 14 years.
Melissa Oosterhouse Named Recipient of MIAA’s Sheila Wallace Kovalchik Award

Awards by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association to the outstanding senior athletes from its member schools during the 2010-11 academic year have been announced by Commissioner David Neilson. Eric Watt (football) of Trine University has received the Albert L. Deal Scholar-Athlete Award, while Melissa Oosterhouse (tennis) of Calvin College has been presented the Sheila Wallace Kovalchik Scholar-Athlete Award. The awards recognize senior class athletes who have excelled in academics and athletics, as well as displayed outstanding leadership qualities. The awards honor two former MIAA commissioners, Albert Deal (1971-91) and Sheila Wallace Kovalchik (1991-2002). Oosterhouse is the fifth individual in Calvin history to receive the Sheila Wallace Kovalchik Award. Prior recipients from Calvin include: Annie VanderLaan (2003), Christine Hendricks (2006), Lisa Winkle (2007 and Sarah Wittingen (2008).
