Brian DeMaagd and Preston Phillips Receive All-MIAA Men’s Tennis Honors

The All-MIAA men’s tennis teams have been announced and Calvin junior Brian DeMaagd has been named to the All-MIAA first team while junior Preston Phillips has been named to the All-MIAA second team. A native of Grandville and a graduate of Calvin Christian High School, DeMaagd is receiving All-MIAA honors for the first time. Earlier this year, he received MIAA Player of the Week honors once.  DeMaagd served as Calvin’s No. 1 singles player this year. In conference play, DeMaagd was 3-3 at No. 1 singles. He was also part of a No. 2 doubles team that went 6-0 in league play this spring.Phillips is from Bexley, Ohio. He is a graduate of Bexley High School. Phillips filled Calvin’s No. 2 singles slot throughout much of the 2012 season. He was 4-2 in singles play against league opponents. He was also part of a No. 1 doubles team for the Knights this spring and posted a 5-1 doubles record against league opponents. Calvin finished the 2012 season with an overall record of 11-9 and a second place finish in the MIAA regular season standings with a 5-1 league mark. The Knights later reached the MIAA Tournament Championship final before falling to Kalamazoo College 5-1.

Megan Visser Receives All-MIAA Second Team Honors

Calvin College freshman Megan Visser has been named to the All-MIAA second team in women’s tennis. A native of Kalamazoo and a graduate of Kalamazoo Christian High School, Visser filled the No. 1 singles spot for Calvin this spring and went 3-5 against league opponents. She also played at No. 1 doubles and went 4-4 against league opponents. Visser was part of a youthful Calvin women’s tennis team that finished 7-13 overall this spring and in fourth place in the final MIAA regular season standings with a 5-3 league record. The Knights later qualified for the four-team MIAA Tournament before bowing to eventual tournament champion Hope.

Men’s Tennis Beats Hope 5-4, Advances to MIAA Tournament FInal

Calvin College men’s tennis defeats rival Hope College 5-4 in the MIAA Tournament semifinals.  Despite the weather delay, the Knights needed a huge comeback from junior Preston Phillips to clinch the win.This earns Calvin a matchup against the Kalamazoo Hornets, a team the Knights have never beaten, in the MIAA Tournament Championship.  The match will be played at 4pm at Kalamazoo’s Stowe Tennis Stadium.
