Elizabeth Counsell/Andrew Krafft Receive MIAA Swimmer/Diver of the Week Honors

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Elizabeth Counsell and Andrew Krafft its Swimmer/Diver of the Week for meets through December 3. Counsell, a junior from Indianapolis, Ind. (Heritage Christian HS), won the 100-yard breaststroke at the Calvin Invitational over the weekend with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:03.62.  She also finished second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.58, with also was a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA meet.  She also swam a :29.06 split on the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay and led off Calvin’s 800 freestyle relay team with an opening leg of 1:57.55. Krafft, a sophomore from Fort Wayne, Ind. (Homeschooled), won both diving events at the Calvin Invitational. He won the 1-meter diving competition with an NCAA provisional score of 515.65 points. A day later, he was again victorious, winning the men’s 3-meter competition with another NCAA provisional score of 540.90 points.  Krafft was the only double event winner from the MIAA at the Calvin invite, which featured four MIAA schools.

Calvin’s Brad Wassink Named Recipient of Men’s Soccer Elite 89 Award

SAN ANTONIO, TX - Brad Wassink, a senior at Calvin College, is the recipient of the Elite 89 award for the 2011 NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship. A native of Long Beach, California, and a graduate of Valley Christian High School, Wassink is majoring in English and political science and carries a 3.94 GPA.  Wassink was presented with the award during the (NCAA III men’s and women’s soccer banquet/presentation) Thursday night in San Antonio, Texas. The Elite 89, an award founded by the NCAA, recognizes the true essence of the student-athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level in his or her sport, while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s championships.

Miles Colago Named Capital One Academic All-American in Men’s Soccer

2011 Capital One Division III Academic All-America Teams

Calvin College senior Miles Colago has been named a second team Capital One Academic All-American in men’s soccer by the College Sports Information Director’s Association of America. Colago is receiving Academic All-America honors at the Division III level. This is the first year that the Capital One Academic All-America program coordinated by the College Sports Information Director’s Association of America (CoSIDA) has been split into four separate divisions. In past years, the program was split into a University (Division I) and College Division (Division II, III and NAIA schools). Beginning with this year, the program now has a separate division for Division I, Division II, Division III and a fourth division for NAIA and two-year institutions. Calvin is also now located in District 6 which includes Division III schools in the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan.Calvin has now had its athletes receive CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades 90 times including 59 times in the last 15 years.
