D3hoops.com Announcement of Jostens Trophy Finalists
For the second consecutive year, Calvin College senior Carissa Verkaik Verkaik has been named one of 11 women’s finalists for the Jostens Trophy which is presented by the Rotary Club of Salem, Va. The Jostens Trophy is awarded to an outstanding Division III men’s and women’s basketball player who excels on the floor, in the classroom and in the community. The Salem Rotary Club Jostens Trophy Committee employs a numerical rating to narrow the list of finalists so that the decision can be made on the most objective basis possible.Last year, Aris Wurtz of Ripon and Taylor Simpson of Chicago took home the trophies. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Verkaik has been a leader on the basketball court, in the classroom and in the community. As a basketball player, she was recently named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player for the fourth straight year. She averaged 20.0 points, 9.2 rebounds and 3.3 blocks a game. She completed her career as Calvin’s all-time leader in points (2,236), rebounds (1,071) and blocked shots (440). She is now currently ranked third on the all-time NCAA III women’s basketball list in blocked shots and 14th in points.
Women’s basketball headed to NCAA III Tournament regional at Cornell College

The Calvin College women’s basketball team is headed to Mount Vernon, Iowa, for an NCAA III region hosted by Cornell College. Calvin (23-3) will face St. Thomas (22-5) in a first round game at 6 p.m. (EST) while host Cornell (24-1) will face St. Scholastica (13-14) in the other first round contest at 8:30 p.m. (EST). Friday’s winners will play Saturday night at 8 p.m. (EST). The Calvin/St. Thomas game will feature a pair of familiar opponents as Calvin and St. Thomas have met twice in a span of less than a year. St. Thomas defeated Calvin 83-72 in overtime in the 2012 national quarterfinals in Chicago, Illinois. The two opponents then met each other in the 2012-13 season opener in November at a tournament hosted by Millikin University with Calvin prevailing 78-72. Calvin, ranked third in the most recent poll by d3hoops.com, has made quarterfinal appearances in 2005, 2007 and 2012. St. Thomas fell to George Fox in last year’s national semifinals. Calvin is 18-14 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play. Calvin will be making its seventh NCAA III Tournament appearance under head coach John Ross.

Men’s basketball headed to Rose Hulman for NCAA III Tournament first round game

The Calvin College men’s basketball team is back in the NCAA III Men’s Basketball Tournament. The Knights will travel to Terre Haute, Ind, for a one-game regional against host Rose-Hulman on March 2. The game is slated to start at 7:00 p.m. EST. Calvin (24-3), which is making its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2007 and 18th overall, will play the Engineers of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (24-3). Calvin won the MIAA Tournament to earn its automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. Rose-Hulman, ranked 23rd in the most recent poll by d3hoops.com, earned its birth by winning the Heartland Athletic Conference Tournament title. The meeting will be the first ever between the two teams. Calvin has played two members of the Heartland Athletic Conference this season. The Knights recorded a 98-56 win over Anderson (IN) on Nov. 20 as well as an 87-63 victory over Manchester (IN) on Nov. 27. Calvin, ranked 15th in the same poll, is 30-18 in NCAA III Tournament games for a .625 winning percentage. The Knights are 12-5 in tournament play under head coach Kevin Vande Streek.

Tickets will be available in the lobby of the Sports and Recreation Center beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. A total of 650 tickets for Calvin fans will be held at the Sports and Recreation Center. An additional 300 tickets will also be available at the door.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Calvin played host the Flying Dutchmen of Hope College Sat. night at the Van Noord Arena in the MIAA Tournament final. The meeting marked the 186th time the two rivals have played. Coming into the game, the Knights were just 1-8 against Hope in MIAA Tournament final games. Despite its record, Calvin defeated Hope 77-57 in front of 4,293 fans to win its first MIAA Tournament title since 2007. Snikkers finished with 17 points, six rebounds, four steals and two assists. Powell finished with 18 points while Kruis finished with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Knights shot 45.5 percent from the field while holding the Flying Dutchmen to 33.3 percent shooting and just 1-14 from beyond the arc. Calvin also held a 41-32 rebounding advantage. With its win, Calvin, now 24-3, earns the MIAA’s automatic qualifier to the NCAA III Men’s Basketball Tournament - a tournament Calvin has not appeared in since the 2006-07 season. The tournament field will be announced at 12:30 EST Monday, Feb. 25, on a live video stream courtesy of ncaa.com.
Women’s tennis begins 2013 campaign with 9-0 win against Cornerstone

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Calvin College women’s tennis season began Friday afternoon as the Knights took on the Golden Eagles from Cornerstone. Calvin notched a 9-0 victory, and starts off its 2013 campaign with a victory. Calvin swept through the doubles matches winning all three in convincing fashion, and continued its momentum into the singles matches. Calvin won all six singles flights, including blanking Cornerstone at first, fifth and sixth singles. Calvin’s next match is scheduled for Feb. 22, against Wheaton. The Knights will travel down to Wheaton for a match slated to start at 7:00 p.m. EST.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Looking to bounce back from the loss at Hope this past Sat., the 19th ranked Calvin men’s basketball team hosted Trine University on Wed. evening. The Knights came out victorious, defeating the Thunder 61-59 at the Van Noord Arena. Powell finished with 19 points including 5-7 from beyond the three-point arc. Brink chipped in 16 points, while Snikkers finished with 10. Jackson, who was held to four points in a 56-43 defeat on Jan. 19 at Hershey Hall, scored Trine’s final 21 points, and finished with 28 points on 9-17 shooting. Calvin committed 17 turnovers, and was outrebounded 33-30. The Knights did shoot 50 percent from beyond the three-point arc. With its win, Calvin improves to 21-3 and 12-1 in the MIAA. Calvin earned a share of the MIAA conference title, and with a win against Olivet this upcoming Sat., Calvin would clinch the outright championship for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

HOLLAND, MI – The 184th meeting between Calvin and Hope took place Saturday afternoon in front of a sold out DeVos Fieldhouse on the campus of Hope College. The Flying Dutchmen defeated rival Calvin 73-70, marking the Knights’ first defeat since falling to Carthage in the MIAA/CCIW Challenge back on Dec. 1 of 2012. Both teams finished with balanced scoring. The Knights were led by Snikkers with 14 points and nine rebounds. Powell, Kruis, De Vries and Brink all finished in double-digits in scoring. Freshman Ben Gardner (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) led Hope with 16 points. Van Arendonk and DeMaagd finished with 12 points. Three other Flying Dutchmen finished with 11 points. Hope shot 19-26 from the charity stripe while Calvin shot just 8-16. Hope also held the advantage in rebounds, outrebounding the Knights 41-33.With its loss, #13 Calvin drops to 20-3 and 11-1 in the MIAA this season. The Knights are currently one game ahead of Hope, who sits at 15-8 and 10-2 in the MIAA. Calvin returns to action Wed., Feb. 13, when it hosts the Trine University Thunder.
Men’s basketball hits 20-win plateau with 90-66 win at Alma

ALMA, MI – The #13 Calvin men’s basketball team traveled to Alma College Wed., Feb. 6 for an MIAA matchup with the Scots. The Knights defeated Alma 90-66 to improve to 20-2 and a perfect 11-0 in the MIAA on the season. Alma could not get any closer in the second half. Snikkers finished with a game-high 28 points. This performance moved Snikkers past Chris Prins and Mickey Phelps on Calvin’s all-time scoring list. Snikkers currently has 1,369 points; good for ninth place all-time. Powell chipped in 18 points while junior center Tyler Kruis (Grandville/Calvin Christian) scored 13 points. The Knights shot 9-19 from beyond the three-point arc. Calvin hits the 20-win plateau for the 16th time in school history and the sixth season under Vande Streek. Calvin travels to Hope College on Sat., Feb. 9, for a game with its rival, the Flying Dutchmen. The game is slated to start at 3:00 p.m.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Calvin College men’s basketball team continued to roll Saturday afternoon defeated the Kalamazoo College Hornets 92-50 at the Van Noord Arena. The Knights, who were ranked 17th in the most recent d3hoops.com men’s basketball poll, improve to 19-2, 10-0 MIAA on the season. Kruis finished with 27 points and 12 rebounds, two points away from tying his career high. Powell finished with 17 points and five assists. Senior Tom Snikkers (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) finished with 16 points and seven rebounds. Snikkers moves into 11th place on Calvin’s all-time scoring list with 1,341 points. Calvin outrebounded Kalamazoo 67-28, and held the Hornets to just 23.9 percent shooting from the field. Calvin returns to action Wed., Jan. 6, when it travels to Alma for a 7:00 p.m. contest against the Scots.
Calvin/Trine Women’s Basketball Game Postponed on Saturday Because of Weather

The Calvin/Trine women’s basketball game scheduled to be played on Saturday at Van Noord Arena has been postponed because of weather conditions that prevented Trine from making the trip up from Indiana. The makeup date for the game will be Monday, February 4, at 7:30 p.m. at Calvin.
