ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin forward Alex McKenzie its MIAA Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending October 11.
McKenzie, a senior from Lindenhurst, Ill. (Antioch HS), scored both of Calvin’s goals in the second half as the Knights posted a 2-0 MIAA win over Trine. The win moved Calvin into sole possession of first place in the MIAA. McKenzie is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

For the first time this year, the Calvin women’s cross country is alone in the top spot in the Division III Top 35 rankings released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Knights received 279 points in this week’s poll to move into sole possession of the top spot. Johns Hopkins (271 points) is now ranked second after sharing the top spot with Calvin a week ago.

For the second time in his career, Calvin College junior Lucas Wilgenburg has been named the MIAA’s Defensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer.
Wilgenburg, a junior from Visalia, Calif. (Central Valley Christian HS), backstopped the Calvin defense with his marking and heading skills as the Knights posted back-to-back shutouts, blanking Olivet, 1-0, and Albion, 5-0. With Wilgenburg playing a key role, Calvin has been unscored upon in its first four MIAA games and has allowed just two goals in 10 games this season.

For the second time this season and for the fourth time in her collegiate carere, Calvin College sophomore Rebecca Kamp has been named the MIAA’s Volleyball Player of the Week.
A sophomore from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), Kamp pounded home 42 kills and had a hitting percentage of .359 in leading the Knights to a 2-1 record in MIAA action for the week.

For the first time in his collegiate career, Calvin College junior forward Kurt Van Sickel has received MIAA Offensive Player of the Week honors in men’s soccer. Van Sickel shares the award this week with Olivet forward Mike May.
A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Van Sickel scored four goals this past weekend as the nationally-ranked Calvin men’s soccer team rolled to a pair of victories at a weekend tournament hosted by Wittenberg, Ohio.

For the fourth time in his collegiate career, Calvin sweeper back Greg Snapper has been named the MIAA Defensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer. A senior from Madison, Wis. (Madison West HS), Snapper led a strong Calvin defense at the Knights posted a pair of wins at the Cal Bergsma Memorial Tournament.
Snapper’s play helped the Knights defeat Wheaton, Ill., 2-1 and 12th-ranked Kenyon, Ohio, 1-0. Calvin has allowed only two goals in its first four games of the season.

For the first time in her career, Calvin College junior setter Carolyn Nelson has been named the MIAA’s Volleyball Specialty Player of the Week.
A native of Milan (Mich.) and a graduate of Milan High School, Nelson dished out 67 assists (11.2 per set) in directing the Knights’ offense in three-set sweeps of Albion and Kalamazoo. Nelson also totaled eight digs in the two matches. Nelson is currently averaging 9.65 assists-per-set.

For the third time in her career, Calvin College sophomore Rebecca Kamp has been named MIAA Player of the Week in volleyball. A native of Orland Park, Illinois, Kamp was named to the all-tournament team at the Ohio Northern Invitational this past weekend as the 16th-ranked Knights posted a 3-1 record including a five-set win over eighth-ranked Southwestern (TX).

The Calvin women’s cross country shares the top spot in the first set of Division III national rankings released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The Knights share the top spot with defending champion Middlebury (Vt.). The Calvin men’s cross country team is ranked seventh in the men’s national poll with North Central (IL) holding down the top spot.
