John Mantel, a senior from Chelsea (Chelsea HS) has been named the MIAA Player of the Week in men’s basketball. Mantel shares the award this week with Kalamazoo’s Joe Prepolec.
Mantel put together back-to-back double-doubles as the Knights opened MIAA play with a pair of home victories. He scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds in an 84-75 win over Hope, then followed with 16 points and 10 rebounds in a 65-61 win over Olivet.

The 174th meeting between Calvin and Hope in menís basketball will take place on Wednesday, January 6, when the two rivals face each other inside Calvinís Van Noord Arena at 7:30 p.m.
Hope currently holds a slim 88-85 series lead in a series that began during the 1920-21 season. Just 101 points separate the teams over 173 games, a difference of only 0.583 points per game!
This will also feature the second meeting of the year between the two teams as Hope edged Calvin 79-76 in the consolation game of the Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Tournament Thanksgiving weekend.

Calvin is partnering with Stretch Internet and will be streaming live video directly to its Web site from the Van Noord Arena in 2010.
The first video stream to be sent to the Calvin Web site will be the January 6, 2010, Calvin-Hope menís basketball varsity game. Calvin will stream the video and audio feed of the WGVU television broadcast for that game. Future home games in both men’s and women’s basketball as well as women’s volleyball will be a single-camera shot with house audio accompanying the video feed.

The Calvin College men’s soccer team excelled on the field this fall, advancing all the way to the NCAA III Championship finals. Under the direction of head coach Chris Hughes, the Knights have also excelled in the classroom too.
The Calvin men’s soccer team was recently selected as a recipient of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America College Team Academic Award. To receive the honor, a team needed to post a cumulative team grade point average of 3.0 or above.
The Calvin men’s soccer team posted a 3.19 grade point average for the 2008-09 academic year. This marks the first time the Knights have received the NSCAA College Team Academic Award.

A record five members of the Calvin men’s soccer team have received Division III All-Central Regional honors as named by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
Named to the All-Central Region first team from Calvin are seniors Greg Snapper, Luke Holtrop and Alex McKenzie and junior Dan Kmetz. In addition, junior Scott Hooker has been named to the All-Central Region second team.
As members of the first team, Snapper, Holtrop, McKenzie and Kmetz are now eligible for NSCAA Division III All-America consideration.

The latest set of Leerfield Sports Directors’ Cup fall sports standings have been released and after an outstanding fall sports campaign, Calvin College stands in second place, just 18 points behind first place Williams (MA).
Calvin has a second place total of 349 points, holding a 30-point lead over third place Washington University (Mo.). Williams (MA) leads the list with 367 points.

The Calvin Hope rivalry took ice Friday night for the first installment of a home and home between the two squads.
Hope set the tone early when freshman Justin Johnston rifled a shot from the left wing into the upper right corner giving Hope a 1-0 advantage. Calvin attempted to respond with a power play later in the first period but was hardly able to muster a shot on net. The first period concluded with Hope on top 1-0.

Three members of the Calvin women’s soccer team have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Division III All-Central Region first team. The three players named to the All-Central Region first team from Calvin are seniors Emily Ottenhoff and Allison Boender and junior Carly Prins.
As members of the first team, all three players are now eligible for Division III All-America consideration. All three players are also receiving All-Central Region honors for the first time.

Tickets for the Jan. 6 Calvin-Hope men’s basketball game at the Van Noord Arena will go on-sale to the public on Monday, Dec. 7th beginning at 9 a.m. at the Calvin Box Office, located on the third floor of the Spoelhof Center (not to be confused with the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex). Walk up and phone orders will be accepted at that time. The Calvin Box Office phone # is 616-526-6282. On Dec. 14th tickets will be available on-line at the Box Office website. All seats are reserved and all tickets are $8.

ROYAL OAK, Mich. Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin forward Carissa Verkaik its Player of the Week in womenís basketball for games played through November 29.
Verkaik, a freshman from Holland (Holland Christian HS), scored 49 points, pulled down 26 rebounds and blocked nine shots in earning tournament Most Valuable Player honors at the Olivet Comet Classic. She scored 26 points and added 13 rebounds in a 79-66 victory over Elmhurst, Ill., then came back the next day to score 23 points, pull down 13 boards and block five shots as the
