Men’s Basketball Team Finishes Second in Final NCAA III Attendance Figures

2009-10 NCAA Men's Basketball Attendance Figures

Calvin College is once again among the NCAA III leaders in men’s basketball attendance. Calvin finished second in this year’s standings with an average of 2,135 fans per game. MIAA rival Hope repeated as the NCAA III attendance champion in men’s basketball for the eighth straight year as it averaged 2,836 fans a game during the 2009-2010 season. Hope’s attendance crown is its 12th.

Combined, Calvin and Hope have now combined to win the last 12 NCAA III attendance crowns.

Calvin Finishes Second in MIAA Commissoiner’s Cup Standings - Wins MIAA Women’s All-Sports Award

In one of the closest finishes in MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings history, Calvin has finished second, one point behind Hope in the final 2009-10 MIAA Commissioner’s Cup race. Hope finished with an overall point total of 209 points with Calvin second with 208 points. Calvin did win the women’s MIAA All-Sports Award competition however, finishing with a total of 116 points with Hope second with 109. Hope won the MIAA Men’s All-Sports Award with 100 points with Calvin second with 92 points.

Melissa Oosterhouse Selected to Compete in NCAA III Singles Tournament

On Thursday, Calvin College junior Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) will make her first appearance in the NCAA III Team Tournament in women’s tennis as the Calvin women’s tennis team will face Baldwin-Wallace College in a first round match at 10 a.m. (CST) at the University of Chicago. On May 28, Oosterhouse will also become the first Calvin women’s tennis player to compete in the NCAA III Singles Tournament. Oosterhouse received a bid to the 32-player NCAA III Singles Tournament Wednesday afternoon. The singles tournament will take place at the Battleground Tennis Complex in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The tournament will be hosted by Mary Washington University.

Shelby Mast Named to All-MIAA Second Team in Softball

Calvin College freshman Shelby Mast (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) has been selected to the All-MIAA second team in softball. A pitcher, Mast had an outstanding freshman campaign for the Knights, appearing in 32 of a possible 35 games and recording an ERA of 2.43. Overall, Mast was 10-18 which included a no-hitter in her season debut on March 22 against Otterbein College. In conference play, Mast led the MIAA in innings pitched (88.1) and strikeouts (76).

Laura Bindon Selected As Recipient of AVCA’s Thirty-Under-30 Award

2009-10 AVCA Thirty-Under-30 Award List

Calvin College assistant volleyball coach Laura Bindon has been selected as a recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association’s yearly Thirty-Under-30 Award.  The award recognizes 30 of the up-and-coming volleyball coaches under 30 years old in the sport at all levels of the game. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Bindon has been an assistant coach at Calvin for seven years. She also graduated from Calvin in 2003 and was a first team All-MIAA selection in volleyball as a senior in 2002. In addition to her duties as an assistant volleyball coach, Bindon also serves Calvin as the assistant director of athletics and as an instructor in Calvin’s HPERDS department.

Calvin Currently 6th in Learfield Director’s Cup Standings

Learfield Division III Director's Cup Standings

The latest set of Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings have been released and after the recently completed winter sports season, Calvin sits in sixth place place with 490.0 points.

Williams (Mass.) is the leader with 896.75 points, holding a 233.5-point lead over Amherst (Mass.) The latest set of standings includes the sports of men’s and women’s basketball, fencing, men’s and women’s ice hockey, skiing, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s indoor track and field and men’s wrestling.

Calvin scored 349 points during the fall sports season and then added 141 points during the winter sports season, scoring in the sports of women’s basketball, women’s indoor track and field and in women’s swimming and diving.

Keith Spoelstra Named MIAA Baseball Pitcher of the Week

For the second time in his collegiate career, Calvin College junior Keith Spoelstra has been named MIAA Pitcher of the Week in baseball for games played through March 29. Spoelstra also received the award as a freshman during the final week of the 2008 MIAA season.

A native of Oakland, New Jersey, Spoelstra fired a complete-game six-hitter Monday afternoon in pitching the Knights to a 3-1 road victory over defending MIAA champion Adrian. A graduate of Eastern Christian High School, Spoelstra did not allow an earned run, walked one and struck out six in his seven innings of work. Spoelstra is currently 2-1 on the season with a team-leading 19 strikeouts. Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Hope in a doubleheader at Calvin Field at 2:00 p.m.

Women’s Basketball Team Headed to Wiconsin to Face St. Nobert (WI) in NCAA III First Round Game

NCAA III Women's Basketball Tournament Bracket

The Calvin women’s basketball team has gained an at-large bid to the NCAA III Tournament. The Knights (24-4) will journey to DePere, Wisconsin, to face host St. Norbert (22-3) in a first round game Friday night at 7:30 p.m. (CST). Calvin will be part of a four-team regional field at St. Norbert with UW-Stevens Point (21-6) set to take on Minnesota-Morris (19-7) in Friday’s other first round game at 5 p.m. (CST).

Friday’s winners will play in the regional final Saturday at 5:00 p.m. (CST).

Tickets are $6.00 for adults and $3.00 for students, senior citizens and children.

Calvin Deadlocked With Hope For MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Lead

The MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings through the recently completed MIAA winter sports season have been released and Calvin and Hope are tied for first place with 136 points. The MIAA Commissioner’s Cup award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league’s 18 sports for men and women.

• The final Commissioner’s Cup standings is determined on the basis of each college’s best standings in eight of nine sports for men and eight of nine sports for women. The tabulation through the winter season is based on 5-of-6 sports for men and 5-of-6 sports for women.

Carissa Verkaik Featured on WZZM-TV13 For Record Scoring Performance

WZZM TV 13 Feature Story on Carissa Verkaik

On Wednesday night, Calvin College freshman Carissa Verkaik established a new Calvin and MIAA single-game scoring record with 46 points in a 93-77 victory over Adrian. Verkaik was 18 of 20 from the field, 3 of 3 from three-point range and 7 of 8 from the free throw line. Her 18 field goals is also a new Calvin and MIAA single-game record. Her scoring performance is also a single-game high in NCAA III women’s basketball this season.

On Thursday, Grand Rapids ABC affiliate WZZM-TV 13 swung by the Calvin campus for a feature story on Verkaik’s scoring performance.
