For the second straight year, Calvin sophomore Shelby Mast has been named to the All-MIAA second team. A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville High School, Mast put together another strong campaign in the pitcherís circle this spring. In league play, Mast led the MIAA in innings pitched (82.1), appearances (14) and games started (11) while also ranking third in strikeouts (62) and eighth in earned run average (2.81). In a 2-0 win over Olivet on April 21, Mast tossed a one-hitter. During her collegiate career, Mast has tossed four one-hitters and one no-hitter.

Calvin College women’s basketball coach John Ross has been named the Women’s College Coach of the Year by the (BCAM) Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan. It marks the second time that Ross has been so honored as he also received the award in 2007. The award honors a women’s basketball coach at a four-year institution in the state of Michigan and includes schools at the NCAA I, II and III levels as well as at the NAIA level. Ross is one of four Michigan collegiate coaches to be honored by BCAM as Gary Bailey of Grace Bible College is the Men’s College Coach of the Year while Jason Cooper of Lake Michigan Community College is the Women’s Junior College Coach of the Year and Dick Shilts of Kalamazoo Valley Community College the Men’s Junior College Coach of the Year.

For the first time in his career, Calvin College senior Peter Steiner has been named the MIAA’s Position Player of the Week in baseball. Steiner shares the award this week with Trine’s Zach Ebersole. Steiner, a senior from Chicago, Ill. (Glenbrook South HS), went 3-for-9 at the plate for a .333 average with six RBIs and four runs scored as the Knights swept a four-game series from Olivet. He delivered a game-winning two-run double on Friday in a 4-2 win over the Comets, then belted a two-run homer that was the difference the next day in a 3-2 victory. Steiner also stole three bases and drew three walks in the series, and pitched a complete-game victory in the 4-2 win, scattering eight hits.

Calvin College senior Andrew Bosma has been named the MIAA Position Player of the Week in baseball. A senior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), Bosma went 8-for-13 at the plate for a .615 average with six RBIs and four runs scored as the Knights took three out of four MIAA games from Albion last week. He went 3-for-4 with two RBIs in a 9-3 win over the Britons. Bosma is being honored as Position Player of the Week for the first time in his career.

Calvin College senior Keith Spoelstra has been named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week in baseball. Spoelstra, a native of Oakland, N.J. (Eastern Christian HS), had two complete-game performances on the mound for the Knights last week, including a three-hit shutout of Hope, 3-0. Spoelstra walked one and struck out three against the Flying Dutchmen. He also had a five-hitter in a 4-2 loss to Adrian. Spoelstra, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the third time in his career, held opposing batters to a .186 batting average in the two games.

The recent success of the Calvin men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships coupled with strong performances by Calvin at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships have boosted Calvin in the AlCarius/Deb Vercauteren Program of the Year Standings. On the women’s side, Calvin is currently tied for fourth with Wisconsin-Oshkosh in the Deb Vercauteren standings while on the men’s side, Calvin is in fifth place in the Al Carius standings.

CLEVELAND Ė Calvin College has moved into the top spot in the first winter Division III Learfield Sports Directorsí Cup Standings with 461.25 points. The Knights added 134.25 points to their fall total after finishing eighth in womenís indoor track & field and 12th in menís indoor track & field. In second place and trailing by just 10.25 points is Washington University (Mo.). The Bears turned in results of eighth in menís indoor track & field and 27th in womenís indoor track & field for a winter total of 115 points. They have an overall total of 451 points. Moving into the top-five in third place is Wisconsin Oshkosh with 423 points. The Titans accumulated 216 points during the first set of winter championships by winning the womenís indoor track & field national championship and additional finishes of fourth in menís indoor track & field and 38th in wrestling.
