Laura Bindon Named AVCA Division III National Assistant Coach of the Year

Calvin College assistant women’s volleyball coach Laura Bindon has been named the AVCA Division III National Assistant Coach of the Year. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Bindon has been with Calvin Head Coach Amber Warners for the past nine years, and Warners calls her a “co-coach” in many areas. Since she joined the coaching staff, the Knights have recorded a 289-56 (.828) record while winning their first ever national championship a year ago. This fall, she was a part of a Calvin team that fashioned an overall record of 33-1 and held a number-one ranking throughout the regular season. Calvin’s only loss came to eventual national champion Wittenberg in the NCAA III Regional Finals.assistant coach. She has also served as a head high school volleyball coach at Hudsonville Unity Christian High School. The American Volleyball Coaches Association will formally present Bindon’s award at the 2011 Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon in San Antonio, Texas on Thursday, December 15. The luncheon is held in conjunction with the 2011 AVCA Annual Convention.
Carissa Verkaik Named MIAA Co-Player of the Week in Women’s Basketball

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Albion center Patty Rewa and Calvin center Carissa Verkaik its MIAA Co-Players of the Week in women’s basketball for games played through November 19. Verakik, a junior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), averaging 17.7 points, 10.3 rebounds and four blocked shots per game as the Knights won three straight games to open the season. She scored 20 points, grabbed 14 rebounds and blocked seven shots in a season-opening 48-43 win over Manchester, Ind., and later had 15 points, 11 boards and five blocked shots as Calvin won a weekend tournament at Anderson, Ind., 70-55. Verkaik, who is being honored as Player of the Week for the seventh time in her career, converted 50 percent of her field goal attempts (22 of 44) and 88 percent of her free throws (7 of 8) for the week.
Tom Snikkers Named MIAA Co-Player of the Week in Men’s Basketball

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin forward Tom Snikkers and Hope forward Nate Snuggerud its Players of the Week in men’s basketball for games played through November 19. Snikkers, a junior from Jenison (Hudsonville Unity Christian HS), averaged 18.3 points and 7.7 rebounds per game for the week as the Knights won two of three games. He won tournament Most Valuable Player at Calvin’s Tip-Off Tournament. In the first game, he had 27 points and 11 rebounds, including a game-tying 3-pointer that sent the game to a second overtime, in a 92-88 double overtime win over Grace Bible. He then followed with 16 points and seven rebounds in the championship game, an 81-76 win over Willamette, Ore. Snikkers is being honored as MIAA Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
