Calvin Vaults Into First Place in Learfield Sports Director’s Cup Standings

CLEVELAND – Calvin College has moved into the top spot in the first winter Division III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Standings with 461.25 points. The Knights added 134.25 points to their fall total after finishing eighth in women’s indoor track & field and 12th in men’s indoor track & field. In second place and trailing by just 10.25 points is Washington University (Mo.). The Bears turned in results of eighth in men’s indoor track & field and 27th in women’s indoor track & field for a winter total of 115 points. They have an overall total of 451 points. Moving into the top-five in third place is Wisconsin Oshkosh with 423 points. The Titans accumulated 216 points during the first set of winter championships by winning the women’s indoor track & field national championship and additional finishes of fourth in men’s indoor track & field and 38th in wrestling.

Tom Snikkers Named to d3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region Third Team

Calvin College sophomore Tom Snikkers has been named to the d3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region third team. A native of Jenison and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Snikkers is receiving all-region honors for the first time in his collegiate career. Snikkers led Calvin in scoring and rebounding this year, averaging 15.6 points and 6.7 rebounds a game while connecting on 47.9 percent of his field goal attempts and 77.9 percent of his free throw attempts. He notched double-digits in scoring in 25 of Calvin’s 28 games this year and four double-doubles along the way including a 33-point, 12-rebound effort against Carthage College on December 4.

Carissa Verkaik Named d3hoops.com Great Lakes Regional Player of the Year

A year ago, Carissa Verkaik was named the d3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Rookie of the Year. This morning, she was announced as the d3hoops.com Great Lakes Region Player of the Year while also landing a spot on the d3hoops.com Great Lakes All-Region first team for the second straight year. A native of Holland and a graduate of Hollland Christian High School, Verkaik averaged 19.8 points and 9.5 rebounds a game while also blocking 123 shots for an average of 4.1 blocks-per-game. She also connected on 59.6 percent of her field goal attempts and 86.7 percent of her free throw attempts.
