Proceeds of Calvin/Davenport Hockey Series to Go To Van Andel Institute in Memory of Bill Wondergem

A two-game set between the Calvin and Davenport ice hockey teams this weekend will have special meaning. All ticket proceeds from the two games will be donated to the Van Andel Institute for cancer research in memory of former Calvin hockey player Bill Wondergem. A 2008 Calvin College graduate, Wondergem passed away unexpectedly last month at the age of 24. Following in the footsteps of his grandfather, father and mother, Wondergem attended Calvin College, where he was a member of the Calvin College men’s hockey team and graduated in 2008 with honors in biology.

Men’s Soccer Receives Bid to NCAA III Tournament - Will Host Regional and Face ONU in First Round

The Calvin men’s soccer team has gained a bid to the NCAA III Tournament and will host a four-team regional this Friday and Saturday. Calvin (15-2-3) will host Ohio Northern (17-4-1) in a first round match on Friday at 1:30 p.m. (EST). with Dominican of Illinois (18-1-1) facing Thomas More of Kentucky (11-5-2) in Friday’s first first round game at 11 a.m. (EST). Calvin is making its fourth straight trip to the NCAA III Tournament, its sixth under current head coach Chris Hughes and its 10th overall. Calvin is 8-8-3 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play. The Knights received an at-large (Pool C) bid to the NCAA III Tournament. A year ago, Calvin advanced all the way to the national title game before falling to Messiah College (PA). Calvin will be facing Ohio Northern for the first time in NCAA III Tournament play but recently played the Polar Bears in 2008, winning 1-0. Ohio Northern is making its third straight trip to the NCAA III Tournament with the Polar Bears also advancing to the national quarterfinals in 2008.

Volleyball Receives Bid to NCAA III Tournament - To Face Otterbein in Regional Hosted by Wittenberg

The women’s volleyball team has received its 20th bid to the NCAA III Tournament. The Knights were selected as an at-large (Pool C) selection earlier today and will travel to an eight-team NCAA III Regional hosted by Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Calvin (26-4) will face Otterbein (26-6) in a first round match on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. The Calvin/Otterbein winner will advance to the second round Friday and will face the winner of a first round match between Heidelberg (32-5) and Greenville (26-5). Other first round matches have Hope (26-4) facing the University of Chicago (30-12) and Ohio Northern (19-12) facing host Wittenberg (30-2). In 19 prior trips to the NCAA III Tournament, Calvin has fashioned a won-loss record of 20-21 with one national runner-up finish and two fourth place finishes. Calvin will be facing Otterbein for the first time in NCAA III Tournament play. Calvin will be making its seventh consecutive NCAA III Tournament appearance - all under the watch of current head coach Amber Warners. Start times for Thursday’s first round matches will be announced later.
