2012 Calvin Women's Soccer Schedule

By Mark DeHaan

From 2005-2010, the Calvin women’s soccer team was a model of consistency as the Knights made the NCAA National tournament each of those years and won no less than 15 games.Unfortunately for the Knights, that streak ended in 2011 as one of the youngest teams in Calvin history earned a 10-10-0 overall record including a 10-6-0 mark in league play. Calvin graduated just one senior from a year ago however and returns a pair of first team All-MIAA selections in seniors Liz Cancel and Francesca Smith. Calvin will open the season on September 4 at home against 2011 national runner-up Wheaton College.

HOLLAND – Although next Tuesday’s game against Kalamazoo will go in the books as an MIAA regular season contest, the match will have a post-season feel to it. The Calvin women’s soccer team made sure of that on Saturday with a 3-2 victory at rival Hope to keep the Knights in the thick of the hunt for one of the final two MIAA Tournament spots. Adrian has already secured the MIAA regular season title while Alma has locked down the second place spot. Meanwhile, Calvin, Kalamazoo and Hope are all locked in a three-way struggle for the final two spots for the four-team MIAA Tournament scheduled for November 3 and 5.

Women’s Soccer Clipped by Adrian 4-3 at Zuidema Field

Box Score

By sports information student assistant Mark DeHaan

On a cool and dreary October afternoon, the Calvin women’s soccer team looked to cool off MIAA-leading Adrian as it played host to the Bulldogs. In conditions that would usually dictate a slower-playing pace, the Knights and Bulldogs ended up battling in a shootout with the Bulldogs prevailing 4-3.  Adrian jumped out to a 2-0 first half lead but the Knights cut the deficit in half on a goal by Paige Rindels late in the half. Adrian went up 3-1 on a corner kick play but the Knights came back again within one - this time on a Liz Cancel goal with just over 20 minutes left to play. Adrian regained a two-goal advantage on a penalty kick by Sam Barker but the Knights clawed back to within 4-3 on yet another goal by Cancel - this one coming with just under eight minutes left in regulation. Adrian’s defense held firm from there however, preventing the Knights from tying the game. Calvin dips to 7-9-0 overall and to 7-5-0 in the MIAA. Calvin will travel to Saint Mary’s on Saturday for a noon contest.
