Women’s Soccer Stung by Hornets - Unbeaten Streak Snapped

KALAMAZOO - The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s soccer team saw its eight-game unbeaten streak come to an end on Saturday as Kalamazoo College handed Calvin a 1-0 defeat. Kalamazoo stung the Knights early as Stephanie Verbeek ripped in a shot six minutes into the match. The goal was just the second allowed by the Calvin defense all year. Calvin then begin to mount pressure, outshooting the Hornets 8-4 in the first half including 7-1 over the final 25 minutes of the first half. Calvin continued to pressure in the second half but could not find the back of the net as Kalamazoo claimed the conference win. Calvin finished the game with a 14-7 shots at goal advantage and had nine corner kicks but Kalamazoo goalkeeper Courtney McCoy had seven saves. Calvin freshman goalkeeper Ashton Hearn had two saves for Calvin in defeat. Calvin (8-2-1 overall, 1-1-0 MIAA) returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts Alma at 5 p.m. at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.

Women’s Soccer Opens MIAA Campaign With 3-0 Win Over Saint Mary’s

The 12th-ranked Calvin women’s soccer team opened MIAA play on Wednesday with a 3-0 win over the visiting Belles of Saint Mary’s in a match played at Calvin’s Zuidema Field. With the win, Calvin stretches its unbeaten streak to eight games. The Knights are 8-1-1 overall. Senior Elaine Schnabel and sophomore Jillian Honderd provided all of the scoring punch for Calvin in the win as Honderd scored a goal in the first half off an assist from Schnabel with Schnabel scoring Calvin’s second goal just 36 seconds later off a pass from Honderd. Honderd struck again just 33 seconds into the second half, whipping in a shot after receiving a lead pass from Schnabel. Calvin finished the game with a 27-2 shots at goal advantage. Freshman goalkeeper Ashton Hearn went the distance in nets for the Knights to gain the shutout victory. Calvin will travel to Kalamazoo on Saturday for a match slated to start at noon.

Women’s Soccer Team Picks up 4-0 Win at Ohio Wesleyan

DELAWARE, OH - The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s soccer team improved to 7-1-1 overall with a 4-0 victory at Ohio Wesleyan University Saturday afternoon. Ranked 15th nationally, the Knights now have a seven-game unbeaten streak. Calvin took a 1-0 halftime lead on a corner kick goal by senior Lauren Heyboer that deflected in off the goalkeeper’s hands. The Knights then broke loose with second half goals from senior Carly Prins and freshmen Brittany Hieftje and Paige Rindels. Calvin outshot Ohio Wesleyan 25-5. Freshman goalkeeper Ashton Hearn went the distance in nets to record the shutout victory. Hearn was credited with one save. Calvin will host St. Mary’s on September 29 at 4 p.m. in the MIAA opener for both teams.
