Calvin Women’s Soccer Upsets Aurora University 1-0 in Overtime in First Round NCAA III Tourney Match

Traveling to Dubuque, Iowa to face Aurora University, the Calvin College women’s soccer team had their work cut out for them as they faced the 19-1-1 Spartans. Aurora entered the match ranked 13th nationally in one poll and 22nd in another. Playing strong defense and shutting down the Aurora offense, Calvin earned a 1-0 overtime win with a goal just 19 seconds into the first overtime from freshman Paige Capel. Calvin will now face host Loras tomorrow at 6 p.m. Loras defeated its first round opponent St. Scholastica 4-1 in the first game on Friday.

2012 Women's Soccer All-MIAA Teams
ROYAL OAK - The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has released its All-MIAA First and Second Teams in women’s soccer. Four Knights earned All-MIAA honors. Senior Francesca Smith, junior Danielle Carter and freshmen Taylor Ten Harmsel were named to the All-MIAA First Team. Freshmen Sydney Kinney was named to the All-MIAA Second Team.
Women’s Soccer Headed to Loras for NCAA III Tournament

The Calvin College women’s soccer team will travel to Loras (Iowa) for an NCAA III Tournament first round game with Aurora (Ill.). Aurora comes into the game with a 19-1-1 record. The other matchup will feature host Loras (17-4) against St. Scholastica of Minnesota (17-4-1). Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for college students and senior citizens. Calvin will face Aurora at 7:30 p.m. CST with the first game being played at 5:00 p.m. CST. Calvin (15-4-1) is making its ninth appearance in the NCAA III Tournament under head coach Mark Recker and ninth overall. The Knights are 7-3-5 all-time in the NCAA III Tournament and have advanced to the national quarterfinals twice in school history (2006 and 2009). The Knights won the MIAA regular season title this year finishing 12-3-1 in league play.
Late Comeback Fuels Calvin Women’s Soccer to MIAA Tournament Championship Victory

A third match between rivals Calvin and Hope in women’s soccer turned out to be a winner-take-all as the teams met in the MIAA Tournament Final. The winner of the contest would earn the MIAA’s automatic qualifying bid for the NCAA tournament. In the end, a pair of late goals from Calvin, one near the end of regulation and a second at the end of the first overtime, gave the Knights the 2-1 win and the MIAA Tournament Championship. Calvin ends the regular season 15-4-1overall. Hope dropped to 14-6-2 on the year with the loss. With the automatic bid, Calvin will return to play next weekend at a location to be determined. The NCAA selection show for the Division III Women’s Soccer bracket will take place on Monday, November 5 at 1:30 p.m.

Calvin Advances to MIAA Tournament Finals with 1-0 Win Over Adrian

.Just two days after defeating Adrian 2-1 in overtime to claim the top seed for the MIAA tournament, it was the Bulldogs who once again stood in the way of the Knights as Calvin had to beat Adrian to earn a berth in the MIAA tournament final Saturday afternoon. In the first semifinal game of the day, it was Hope defeating Alma 3-2 to earn the first berth into the final. Calvin, with an early goal from freshman Taylor TenHarmsel, earned the second as strong defense from the Knights gave them a 1-0 victory and a third game against the rival Flying Dutch.

GRAND RAPIDS – Calvin needed double overtime to defeat the Hornets of Kalamazoo College 1-0 in the MIAA Tournament semifinals Thursday afternoon. In the 109th minute, freshmen Taylor Pruis broke free on the far sideline and sent a cross into the box. Sophomore Travis Vegter (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) rose up inside the six-year box and headed the ball past Kalamazoo goalkeeper Dane McDonnell giving the Knights the victory. Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 13-3 in the first half. Each team took two corner kicks.Before the goal by Vegter, Calvin had six shots in the overtimes, while holding Kalamazoo to zero.The Knights outshot the Hornets 28-5 in the contest including 6-2 in shots on goal. Calvin will move on to the MIAA Tournament Championship played Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Olivet defeated Hope 2-1 in the other semifinal, so Calvin will face the Comets at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.”

Women’s Soccer Defeats Adrian 2-1 in Overtime, Earns MIAA Title Outright

ADRIAN – The Calvin College women’s soccer team needed overtime to defeat Adrian 2-1 and win the MIAA Championship outright Wednesday afternoon. The Knights used goals from freshmen Taylor Ten Harmsel and junior Kelly Koets in overtime to defeat the Bulldogs. Calvin outshot Adrian 12-11 in the 99-minute contest including 9-4 in shots on goal. This MIAA title is the ninth in school history, more than any other MIAA school. Calvin will host the MIAA Tournament as the top seed. The semifinals take place at 1 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. on Friday, November 2 at Calvin’s Zuidema Field. Calvin will meet Adrian again in the semifinals with the game slated for 3:30 p.m. Alma will face Hope in the first semifinal at 1 p.m.
Women’s Soccer Clinches Share of MIAA Regular Season Title With 2-0 Win Over Hope

Looking to bounce back after a loss at Kalamazoo on Thursday, the Knights women’s soccer team played strong on their way to a 2-0 victory over rival Hope on Senior Day. With the 2-0 victory, the Knights clinched a share of the MIAA title and a record sixth MIAA regular season title for Calvin sports teams this fall. The Knights also clinch a spot in next week’s four-team MIAA Tournament although the top seed for the league tournament is still up for grabs.The win elevates Calvin to 11-3-1 in the MIAA and 12-4-1 overall. Hope drops to 9-4-2 in conference and 12-5-2 overall. Calvin’s final regular season game is Wednesday when its travels to Adrian to face the Bulldogs with the first kick slated for 4 p.m. The match will be a showdown for the MIAA title as Adrian is just three points behind Calvin in the league standings and could gain a share of the league title and gain the top seed for the league tournament with a win over the Knights.
Women’s Soccer Falls to Kalamazoo in Overtime, Still First in MIAA

KALAMAZOO – The Calvin women’s soccer team battled Kalamazoo into overtime Thursday night at Kalamazoo’s Mackenzie Field. The Hornets were not to be denied on senior day, as senior Jackie Short scored her 16th goal of the season, defeating the Knights seven minutes into the first overtime.Calvin outshot Kalamazoo 15-14 in the contest. The Knights also held the advantage in corner kicks 10-7. Calvin had three good chances in the game. The first coming form freshmen Paige Capel, who shot toward the far post, only to be saved by Kalamazoo goalkeeper Lucy Mailing. The second came from sophomore Elle Burman, who sent a chip shot far post in the 35th minute that was tipped over the crossbar by Mailing. The final great scoring chance came with two minutes to go in regulation. Junior Kelly Koets got a head on a corner kick sent by freshmen Sydney Kinney. The shot sailed just over the crossbar. Calvin still sits atop the MIAA with 31 points. Hope and Kalamazoo sit with 29 points while Adrian has 28. All teams have two more regular season games remaining. Calvin returns to action Saturday when it hosts the Flying Dutch of Hope College. The game is slated to start at noon at Calvin’s Zuidema Field.
Women’s Soccer Rolls to 9-0 Win at Albion

ALBION - The Calvin women’s soccer team rolled to a 9-0 win at Albion Tuesday afternoon to move to 11-3-1 overall and to 10-2-1 in the MIAA. Calvin remains in sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings. Calvin led 4-0 at halftime and never looked back. Junior Danielle Carter and freshman Christina Drost had two goals apiece. Also scoring for the Knights were seniors Francesca Smith and Liz Cancel, juniors Heidi Scholten and Kelly Koets and freshman Sydney Kinney. Goalkeepers Ashton Hearn, Lauren Merz and Leesha Gunnink combined on the shutout for the Knights. Calvin will continue a busy week on Thursday, traveling to Kalamazoo for a 7 p.m. contest.
