Women’s Soccer Defeats Augustana 2-1 in Sectional Semifinal - To Face Wash. U. in Quarters Saturday

ROCK ISLAND, IL – For the second time in four years, the Calvin women’s soccer team is headed to the national quarterfinals. The Knights defeated host Augustana 2-1 Friday night in a Round of 16 NCAA III Tournament game. Calvin (16-4-1) will face Washington University (MO) which advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinal by winning a penalty kick shootout against Wheaton after the game finished in a 0-0 tie. Saturday’s national quarterfinal game will begin at 7:00 p.m. (EST) at Augustana with the winner advancing to the NCAA III Final Four in San Antonio, Texas, December 4 & 5.

Saturday’s quarterfinal game will feature the second meeting of the year between Calvin and Washington University with the Bears picking up a 1-0 win at Calvin in mid-September.

Allison Boender Named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in Women’s Soccer

Calvin College senior Allison Boender has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American in women’s soccer. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American teams are voted on by the College Sports Information Director’s Association of America (CoSIDA).

A native of Grandville and a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian High School, Boender has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America third team in women’s soccer in the college division. The college division includes NCAA II and III schools as well as NAIA institutions.

Men’s Soccer Headed to Carnegie-Mellon - Women’s Soccer Headed to Augustana for Sectionals

The upcoming opponents for the Calvin men’s and women’s soccer teams are now in place for the third round of the NCAA III Tournament. The Calvin men’s soccer team (16-4-1) will face a Carnegie-Mellon (PA) team which defeated Medaille (NY) 1-0 yesterday afternoon. The other two teams in the sectional bracket will include Swarthmore (16-2-2) and Transylvania (16-3-1).

Located in Pittsburgh, Carnegie-Mellon has also been selected to host the sectional Friday and Saturday (November 20 and 21). Swarthmore will take on Transylvania in the first game with the Calvin/Carnegie-Mellon game set to follow at 7:30 p.m.

On the women’s side, Calvin (15-4-1) will face College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin champion Augustana (IL) as part of a four-team sectional hosted by Augustana. The Calvin/Augustana game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m. (EST). The sectional will also include Wheaton (IL) and Washington University of St. Louis. Wheaton and Wash. U will play in the second game on Friday. Friday’s winners will play in the national quarterfinal game at Augustana at 7:00 p.m. (EST).
