Calvin Women’s Soccer Team Receives NSCAA Award for Ethics and Sportsmanship

The Calvin women’s soccer team has received the College Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.  In all, 254 teams received either the Gold, Silver or Bronze version of the College Team Ethics and Sportsmanship Award, which recognizes teams that exhibit fair play, sporting behavior and adherence to the laws of the game, as reflected by the number of yellow caution cards or red ejection cards they are shown by referees throughout the season. A total of 157 teams claimed the Silver Award, which is given to teams that accumulate no red cards and a maximum of five yellow cards, while the Bronze Award went to 72 teams, which is presented to teams that receive no reds and a maximum of 10 yellows. Calvin was recognized as a Silver Award recipient. During the season, Calvin received just four yellow cards and did not receive a red card. Under the direction of head coach Mark Recker, Calvin captured MIAA regular season and tournament titles this fall while also advancing to the NCAA III Tournament for the eighth time in the last nine years. The Knights finished with an overall record of 19-3-2 and were ranked 22nd in the final NSCAA Division III Top 25 poll as well as 21st in the final D3soccer.com Top 25 poll.

Carter and Hearn Receive NSCAA College Division All-North Central Region Scholar-Athlete Honors

Two members of the Calvin women’s soccer team have received academic honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Senior Danielle Carter has been named to the NSCAA Division III Scholar All-North Central Region second team while senior Ashton Hearn has been named to the third team. A four-year starter in midfield, Carter (DeWitt/DeWitt HS) scored four goals and added two assists for a total of 10 points this fall. She scored game-winning goals against Adrian and Olivet and was named MIAA Offensive Player of the Week once as well as to the All-MIAA first team. She concluded her career with totals of 19 goals and 10 assists. She was also named to the NSCAA All-Central Region second team. A kinesiology major, Carter carries a 3.76 grade point average. A goalkeeper, Hearn (Port Huron/Port Huron Northern HS) was also a four-year member of the Calvin women’s soccer team and a three-year starter in nets.  This fall, she compiled a goals-against-average of 0.67 and a won-loss record of 18-3-2 to go with 10 shutouts. Over the course of her career, she recorded 33 shutouts and an overall won-loss record of 53-13-5.  Hearn carries a 3.88 grade point average at Calvin while majoring in speech pathology. Earlier this fall, she was named to the Capital One Division III Academic All-District team.

Calvin in Fourth Place in Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Fall Sports Standings

Learfield Directors' Cup Standings for 12-12-13

The latest set of Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup fall sports standings have been released and after an outstanding fall sports campaign, Calvin College stands in fourth place with 269 points. Williams (Mass) leads the standings with 376 points with Middlebury (Vt.) second with 310 points and Trinity (Tx.) third with 281 points. Calvin picked up 100 points from its women’s volleyball team that captured the national championship last month in Holland, Michigan. Calvin also received 72 points from its women’s cross country team that placed seventh at the NCAA III Championships, 50 points from its women’s soccer team that reached the second round of the NCAA III Tournament and 47 points from its men’s cross country team that finished 27th at the NCAA III Championships.

MIAA Commissioner David Neilson to Retire at Conclusion of 2013-14 Academic Year

ALBION, Mich. – David L. Neilson, the commissioner of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association since 2002, has announced he will retire from the position at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year. The announcement of Commissioner Neilson’s retirement came Tuesday from Dr. Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran, president of Kalamazoo College and vice chairwoman of the MIAA Presidents’ Council.  He is the eighth and third-longest serving commissioner in the MIAA’s 126-year history. Commissioner Neilson and his wife, Karen, live in Royal Oak. They have four children and five grandchildren. The MIAA is the nation’s oldest collegiate athletic conference, founded in 1888. The MIAA consists of nine private colleges from Michigan and northern Indiana. Member institutions are Adrian College, Albion College, Alma College, Calvin College, Hope College, Kalamazoo College, Olivet College, Saint Mary’s College and Trine University.

Calvin Women’s Soccer Team Cracks Final Division III Top 25 Polls

The Calvin women’s soccer team has finished ranked in a pair of final season-ending national polls.  Calvin is ranked 22nd in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III Top 25 post-season poll. Under the direction of head coach Mark Recker, the Knights finished the 2013 season with an overall record of 19-3-2. Calvin captured the MIAA regular season title with a 13-2-1 conference mark and then won the league tournament for the second straight year, defeating Adrian and Hope in tournament play. Calvin also advanced to the NCAA III Tournament for the second straight year and for the eighth time in the last nine years.

NSCAA Division III All-Central Region Women's Soccer Teams

Three members of the Calvin women’s soccer team have been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Continental Tire Division III All-Central Region second team. Named to the NSCAA/Continental Tire Division III All-Central Region second team are senior Danielle Carter and sophomores Paige Capel and Taylor Ten Harmsel. Under the direction of head coach Mark Recker, Calvin finished the year with an overall record of 19-3-2 and captured the MIAA regular season title with a league mark of 13-2-1. The Knights then captured the MIAA Tournament crown with tournament wins over Adrian and Hope and then advanced to the second round of the NCAA III Tournament before bowing to top-ranked Washington University of St. Louis. Calvin’s 19 wins were the second highest single-season total in Calvin women’s soccer history.

Women’s Soccer Bows Out of NCAA III Tournament With 3-1 Loss at #1 Washington University

ST. LOUIS, MO - The magical run for the Calvin women’s soccer team came to an end Saturday night on the campus of Washington University of St. Louis. as the Knights dropped a 3-1 decision to top-ranked Wash. U. Calvin scored the first goal of the game as sophomore Paige Capel whipped in a shot just over two minutes into the contest. The host Bears tied the game just over 10 minutes later however and then scored two goals in the second half including the clincher with just over five minutes remaining. Wash. U held a 25-3 shots at goal advantage. The loss ends the careers of seniors Danielle Carter, Ashton Hearn, Kelly Koets, Paige Rindels, Heidi Scholten, and Rebekah Wissink. Calvin ends the season with an overall record of 19-3-2.

Women’s Soccer Advances to Second Round of NCAA’s With 1-0 Double-Overtime Win Over Aurora

ST. LOUIS, MO - The Knights traveled to St. Louis for an NCAA Tournament first round contest against a familiar foe on Friday evening. Calvin women’s soccer was matched up against the Spartans of Aurora University for the second year in a row, a Spartan squad whom Calvin defeated 1-0 in overtime last season.  In a game eerily similar to a year ago, the Knights once again defeated Aurora 1-0 - this time in double overtime.  For the second straight year, the game-winning overtime goal also came off the foot of Calvin’s Paige Capel.  The goal by Capel came with 4:09 left in the second overtime and was assisted by senior Heidi Scholten. Calvin is now 4-0-2 in overtime games this year. The Knights will face top-ranked Washington University of St. Louis in a second round game Saturday night at 6 p.m.

Calvin Lands Seven on All-MIAA Women’s Soccer Teams

Seven members of the MIAA champion Calvin women’s soccer team have received All-MIAA honors. Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are senior midfielder Danielle Carter and sophomore forward Paige Capel and sophomore midfielder Taylor Ten Harmsel. Named to the All-MIAA second team from Calvin are senior goalkeeper Ashton Hearn, senior midfielder Heidi Scholten and sophomore defenders Sidney Kinney and Kelsey Hiegel. Calvin captured the MIAA regular season title with a 13-2-1 conference record this fall and later won the MIAA Tournament title with tournament wins over Adrian and Hope. Calvin will compete in the NCAA III Tournament this Friday in a first round game against Aurora University at 8:30 p.m. in St. Louis, Missouri.

Four Calvin fall sports teams will be in action this weekend. The Calvin women’s volleyball team will host an eight-team Great Lakes Regional Thursday, Friday and Saturday while the Calvin men’s and women’s cross country programs will host the Great Lakes Regional Championships Saturday at the Gainey Athletic Complex. In addition, the women’s soccer team will compete at a four-team NCAA III Regional hosted by Washington University of St. Louis.
