HOLLAND—Last second goals are always the hardest to bear, especially in a match-up that features two such rivals as Calvin and Hope.  And this is what the Knights had to do Tuesday night as they suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Dutchmen in a double-overtime thriller.

In the first ever Calvin-Hope game held at Hope’s brand new Van Andel Soccer Stadium there was a good turnout from both sides of the rivalry with many alumni, parents, and students coming out and enduring the cold to cheer their teams on to victory under the bright lights.

Box Score

Slated with the second game of a soccer double-header, the men again came out strong on what could be called a cold and blustery Saturday afternoon, defeating the Trine Thunder by a score of 2-0.

After a somewhat frustrating win against Kalamazoo this past Wednesday, a game in which the Knights were struggling to finish for goals, Saturday’s contest looked early on to be of the same nature.  The Knights out-shot the Thunder 29-4 with a 12-1 shots-on-goal differential.  In the first half, no goals were scored.

The win also boosted Calvin into sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings as Hope was defeated by Olivet 1-0 on Saturday, giving Calvin a three-point lead over Hope heading into a Tuesday showdown in Holland.

On a chilly Wednesday afternoon at Calvin’s Zuidema Field, the nationally-ranked Calvin men’s soccer team outlasted a persistent Kalamazoo squad 1-0.

On the final box score, Calvin looked dominant in virtually every facet of the game, but on the field it was a different story.  A last second first half penalty kick by senior Michael Holwerda (Grand Rapids, MI) put Calvin on the board, and a scoreless second half saw the Knights prevail.

With the victory, Calvin moved into a tie for first place in the MIAA standings with Hope at 4-0-1 in league play. Adrian tied Hope on Wednesday night 1-1. Adrian also tied Calvin 0-0 earlier this year.

For the second time in his career, Calvin College junior Lucas Wilgenburg has been named the MIAA’s Defensive Player of the Week in men’s soccer.

Wilgenburg, a junior from Visalia, Calif. (Central Valley Christian HS), backstopped the Calvin defense with his marking and heading skills as the Knights posted back-to-back shutouts, blanking Olivet, 1-0, and Albion, 5-0. With Wilgenburg playing a key role, Calvin has been unscored upon in its first four MIAA games and has allowed just two goals in 10 games this season.
