Longtime Calvin Soccer Coach, Educator and Administrator Passes Away

GRAND RAPIDS - Calvin College has lost one of its legendary Knights. Dr. Marvin A. Zuidema passed away late this afternoon after a battle with illness of just over a year. He was 75. Known as “Dr. Z” to those in the Calvin community, Zuidema touched many lives at Calvin, in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association and in collegiate athletics across the country. A native of Muskegon, Zuidema graduated from Calvin College in 1957. He continued on to earn a master’s degree at Michigan State University and in 1961, returned to Calvin as an instructor and coach in the school’s physical education department. For the next 43 years, he served the Calvin physical education department as a professor, department chair, coach and director of men’s athletics.

Visitation will take place at Zaagman Funeral Home in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, June 21, from 5-to-8 p.m. and on Wednesday, June 22, from 5-to-8 p.m. The funeral will take place on Thursday, June 23 at 3 p.m. at Shawnee Park Christian Reformed Church located directly (east) behind Grand Rapids Christian High School.

Calvin Finishes Fifth in Final Learfield Sports Director’s Cup Standings

For the 16th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final NCAA III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, finishing fifth in the nation in Division III in 2010-11 with a total of 762.25 points. Calvin’s point total and its (placement) finish is its highest-ever in the 16 years of the competition. Calvin is one one of only six schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level. Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga. Williams College, Mass., defended its title as the best athletics program in the nation in Division III by winning its 15th U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup with 1,147 points.

Calvin Announces Recipients of Bere’/Tiemersma Awards

GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan—Calvin College has announced the 2011 recipients of its highest honors for men’s and women’s athletics:  the Beré Memorial Award and the Kay Tiemersma Athletic Award. Scott Hooker of Hudsonville, Michigan, is this year’s Beré Memorial Award winner while Melissa Oosterhouse of Grand Rapids, Michigan, is this year’s recipient of the Tiemersma Award. A graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Scott Hooker has been a four-year member of the Calvin men’s soccer team.Oosterhouse meanwhile is a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School and has been a four-year member of the Calvin women’s tennis program.
