Men’s Soccer to Face University of Redlands in Sectional Semfinal Game

The four-team field for the sectional tournament that the Calvin men’s soccer team is competing in is set for next weekend. Calvin (17-5-1) will take on the University of Redlands (Ca.) in a sectional semifinal game on Friday at 7:30 p.m. (PCT) in California. Redlands will serve as the sectional host. Randolph College (Va.) will face the University of Texas-Tyler in the first sectional semifinal game at 5 p.m. (PCT). Friday’s winners will then meet in the national quarterfinals at 5 p.m. (PCT) Saturday night. Redlands (20-3-1) advanced to the sectional semifinals with a 3-0 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Sunday night. Randolph (18-5-0) advanced to the sectional round with a 3-2 win over DeSales on Sunday while Texas-Tyler (17-2-2) advanced with a 2-0 win over Trinity (Tx) on Sunday. Calvin advanced to the sectional round with a 4-0 win over Loras College Saturday night. Calvin will be making its third straight appearance in the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament including its fourth appearance in the last seven years. Men’s Soccer Defeats Loras 4-0 in Regional Final - Headed to Round of 16 For Third Straight Year

DUBUQUE, IA - For the third year in a row and for the fourth time under current head coach Chris Hughes, the Calvin men’s soccer team is headed back to the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament. The Knights punched their ticket to the next round with an emphatic 4-0 victory over 12th-ranked Loras College Saturday night at the Rock Bowl. Calvin will face an opponent from a regional hosted by Redlands College. Calvin received first half goals from freshmen Sean Broekhuizen and Travis Vegter. In the second half, sophomore Zach Willis netted a pair of goals less than two minutes apart to seal the win. Senior Michael Dolan pitched the shutout in nets for the Knights - his eighth of the year. Calvin is now 12-9-4 all-time in NCAA III Tournament play including 4-2-4 over the last three years. Calvin’s next opponent and site of competition will likely not be determined until late Sunday night.

DUBUQUE, IA - The Calvin men’s soccer team defeated Carthage College 1-0 Friday night in a first round NCAA III Tournament game at Loras College. Calvin advances to the second round Saturday night to face the winner of a first round game between host Loras and Minnesota-Morris. Calvin junior Nick Holtrop scored the only goal of the game, heading in a pass from sophomore Zach Willis in the 77th minute of play. Calvin was outshot 18-12 but junior goalkeeper Michael Dolan had five saves for the Knights to gain the shutout win. Loras defeated Minnesota-Morris 2-0 in Friday’s other first round game.
