Miles Colago Named Capital One Academic All-American in Men’s Soccer

Calvin College senior Miles Colago has been named a second team Capital One Academic All-American in men’s soccer by the College Sports Information Director’s Association of America. Colago is receiving Academic All-America honors at the Division III level. This is the first year that the Capital One Academic All-America program coordinated by the College Sports Information Director’s Association of America (CoSIDA) has been split into four separate divisions. In past years, the program was split into a University (Division I) and College Division (Division II, III and NAIA schools). Beginning with this year, the program now has a separate division for Division I, Division II, Division III and a fourth division for NAIA and two-year institutions. Calvin is also now located in District 6 which includes Division III schools in the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan.Calvin has now had its athletes receive CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades 90 times including 59 times in the last 15 years.

A pair of Calvin men’s soccer players have recently been honored by the website: Collegesoccer360.com. Senior Brad Heethuis has been named a Division III Prime Time Performer by the website while junior
Nick Holtrop received the same honor the week before. Heethuis and Holtrop are both graduates of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School. Heethuis scored the game-tying goal in the closing moments of a national quarterfinal contest against the University of Texas-Tyler on November 20. Holtrop scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 first round NCAA III Tournament victory over Carthage on November 12. Heethuis is is honored online at: Heethuis Prime-Time Performer

Men’s Soccer Headed Back to NCAA III Final Four After 3-2 Double-Overtime Win Over Texas-Tyler

REDLANDS, CA - For the second time in three years, the Calvin men’s soccer team (18-5-2) is headed back to the NCAA III Final Four. The Knights captured a national quarterfinal match over the University of Texas-Tyler (17-2-3) in improbable fashion Saturday night, winning 3-2 in double-overtime.Calvin will face Oneonta State (18-2-2) of New York. Montclair State (NJ) will face Ohio Wesleyan in the other semifinal. Calvin will play in the semifinals on December 2 in San Antonio, Texas, site of the NCAA III semifinals and final. Playing a man short, Calvin tied the game in the 86th minute of play on a goal by senior Brad Heethuis and then won the game 102nd minute of play on a goal by junior Trevor Bushhouse with Bushhouse rebounding a corner kick struck by junior Chris Nance. Calvin took a 1-0 lead on a first half goal by freshman Travis Vegter only to see Texas-Tyler score the next two goals.
