Nick Holtrop Named to D3soccer.com All-America Third Team

Calvin College senior Nick Holtrop has gained yet another All-America nod in men’s soccer. A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Holtrop has been named to the D3soccer.com All-America third team. Earlier this month, he was named a second team Division III All-American by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Over the course of his four-year career at Calvin, Holtrop was credited with 11 goals and 18 assists while serving as a center midfielder. It marks the third consecutive year that a member of the Calvin men’s soccer team has picked up D3soccer.com All-America accolades as Miles Colago was so honored in both 2010 and 2011.

Calvin Takes Over Division III Learfield Director’s Cup Lead

Learfield Director's Cup Division III Standings for 12-6-12

The latest set of Division III Learfield Director’s Cup standings have been released and Calvin has taken over the lead with 308.50 points. The latest set of standings include the sports of men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, women’s field hockey and volleyball. Middlebury (Vt.) is in second with 306.5 points. Calvin received 90 points from its national runner-up women’s volleyball team and men’s cross country team and 56 points from its women’s cross country team that placed 18th at the NCAA III Championships. In addition, Calvin picked up 50 points from its women’s soccer team that reached the second round of the NCAA III Tournament and 25 points from its men’s soccer team that reached the first round of the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin had been in second place in the first set of standings released two weeks ago but has since moved up to first place due to points gained through its men’s and women’s soccer teams.

NSCAA Division III All-Central Region Men's Soccer Teams

Four members of the Calvin men’s soccer team have received Division III All-Central Region honors. Those four individuals are seniors Nick Holtrop, Joe Broekhuizen and Dan Nederhoed and sophomore Travis Vegter. Holtrop has been named to the All-Central Region first team while Broekhuizen has been named to the second team and Nederhoed and Vegter to the third team. Holtrop and Nederhoed are receiving all-region accolades for the second straight year while Broekhuizen and Vegter are being so honored for the first time.

Nick Holtrop Named NSCAA/Continental Tire Division III All-American in Men’s Soccer

NSCAA Division III Men's Soccer All-Americans

Calvin College senior Nick Holtrop has been named a second team Continental Tire Division III All-American in men’s soccer by the National Soccer Coaches Association of American. A native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School, Holtrop is receiving Division III All-America honors for the first time. Holtrop is the seventh individual in Calvin men’s soccer history to be named an All-American and it marks the eighth time a Calvin player has been so honored. A midfielder, Holtrop collected four goals, seven assists and 15 points in helping lead Calvin to an unprecedented sixth consecutive MIAA regular season title this fall along with an MIAA Tournament title and a sixth straight trip to the NCAA III Tournament.

Calvin Second in First Set of Division III Learfield Director’s Cup Standings

Learfield Director's Cup Standings for 11-21-12

The first set of Division III Learfield Director’s Cup standings have been released and Calvin is currently in second place with 233.50 points. The first set of standings include the sports of men’s and women’s cross country, women’s field hockey and volleyball. Middlebury leads the standings with 256.50 points. Calvin received 90 points from its national runner-up women’s volleyball team and men’s cross country team and 56 points from its women’s cross country team that placed 18th at the NCAA III Championships last weekend. The Learfield Director’s Cup is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country. The Learfield Director’s Cup race is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions.

Calvin Takes Early Lead in MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings

A record-setting fall sports season has allowed Calvin to build an early lead in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings. Through the recently completed MIAA fall sports season, Calvin leads the standings with 100 points, four points better than Hope. In the MIAA Women’s All-Sports Standings, Calvin has a first place total of 58 points with Hope second with 53. Hope leads the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 43 points, one point better than Calvin.  This fall, Calvin captured a record six MIAA titles – winning conference crowns in men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s golf and volleyball.

Men’s Soccer Falls to DePauw 3-0 in NCAA III Tournament First Round Game

RIVER FOREST, IL - Calvin College men’s soccer traveled to Dominican University for first round NCAA Division III Tournament action against DePauw University Friday afternoon. Unfortunately for Calvin, a 1st minute goal by DePauw and an inability to find the back of the net doomed the Knights as they fell 3-0.  The loss ended the careers of arguably the most successful class in Calvin soccer history. Seniors Nick Holtrop, Joe Broekhuizen, Dan Nederhoed, Jared Rushlau, Trevor Bushouse and Chris Nance made it to the National Tournament all four years of their Calvin careers, advancing to the national final twice and the quarterfinals once. Calvin ends its season with a record of 16-4-1.

Six Knights Earn All-MIAA Honors in Men’s Soccer

Men's Soccer All-MIAA Teams

ROYAL OAK - Six members of the Calvin men’s soccer team have earned All-MIAA honors.  Seniors Nick Holtrop, Dan Nederhood and Joe Broekhuizen as well as sophomore Travis Vegter earned spots on the All-MIAA First Team.  Junior Zach Willis and sophomore Sean Broekhuizen were named to the All-MIAA Second Team.  In addition, Holtrop was named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Player.

Men’s Soccer Headed to Dominican for NCAA III Tournament

The Calvin College men’s soccer team will travel to Dominican University (Ill.) for an NCAA III Tournament first-round matchup with DePauw (13-1-5) on November 9.  The other game will feature host Dominican (16-2-1) against Webster from Missouri (12-5-2).  Calvin will face DePauw at 1:30 p.m. CST.  Calvin (16-3-1) will be making its 11th appearance and sixth straight in the NCAA III Tournament.  A season ago, Calvin fell to Ohio Wesleyan 2-1 in the national championship game.  Calvin captured the MIAA regular season title this year, finishing 12-1-1 in league play.

Reed Bowden Named MIAA Men’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Olivet midfielder Jon Puente and Calvin defender Reed Bowden its Players of the Week in men’s soccer for games played through November 3. Bowden, a sophomore from Uxbridge, Mass. (Whitinsville Christian HS), anchored a strong defensive effort from his centerback position as he led the Knights to back-to-back shutouts in the MIAA tournament. Calvin limited its opposition to 12 shots for the tournament in wins over Kalamazoo, 1-0, and Olivet, 3-0. Bowden is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in his career.
