For the third consecutive year, the Calvin women’s tennis team has received the ITA All-Academic Award. All three awards have come under current head coach Jerry Bergsma.
In order to receive the award, a team needed to maintain a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above for the 2009-10 academic year. The Calvin women’s tennis team posted a team grade point average of 3.422 during the 2009-10 academic year.

The 2009-10 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 143 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list.
The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2009-10 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom. This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years. Of the students, 19 are from Calvin.

For the second consecutive year, 10 Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2009-10 academic year – matching a Calvin record. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2009-10 academic year. A year ago, Calvin established a school record as 10 of its 17 varsity teams eligible for the honor achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average.

For the 15th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final NCAA III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, finishing 14th in the nation in Division III in 2009-10 with a total of 634 points.
Calvin’s point total is its second-highest ever in the 15 years of the competition.
Calvin continues to be one of only seven schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level.
Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., Wisconsin-LaCrosse, the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga.
Williams College, Mass., defended its title as the best athletics program in the nation in Division III by winning its 14th U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup with 1,292.25 points.

Calvin College juniors Melissa Oosterhouse and Monica Bressler have been named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans in the women’s college at-large division as selected by the College Sports Information Director’s Association of America. Oosterhouse has been named to the first team while Bressler has been named to the third team. The Women’s At-Large program for Academic All-America® includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, tennis and water polo. Calvin has now had its athletes receive ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America accolades 85 times including 54 times in the last 12 years.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The NCAA III Singles Tournament run for Calvin College junior Melissa Oosterhouse came to an end in the first round Friday morning as she was defeated by Lorne McManigle 6-4, 6-2. McManigle entered the tournament as the defending NCAA III singles champion, having won the individual crown at the 2009 NCAA III Singles Tournament. Oosterhouse was making her first appearance in the NCAA III Singles Tournament but despite the fact, battled gamely against a staunch opponent.

FREDRICKSBURG, VA - The National College Athletic Association (NCAA) has announced Calvin College junior Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) is the recipient of the Elite 88 for Division III women’s tennis.
Oosterhouse is the first individual to receive the award and the second MIAA athlete to be so honored. Kellen Beckwith of Olivet College received the award in men’s swimming and diving this past March.

FREDERICKSBURG, VA - The NCAA III Singles Tournament draw was announced late Thursday afternoon and Calvin junior Melissa Oosterhouse will be presented with a stiff challenge in round one. Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) will face Lorne McManigle of Emory University in a first round match Friday morning at 9 a.m.

Calvin College junior Melissa Oosterhouse has added yet another award to her growing mantle of awards. On Monday, Oosterhouse was named the Division III Central Region Player to Watch by the International Tennis Association. The award is open to players who are second or third year players participating in NCAA Division III singles or doubles.

GRAND RAPIDS - Two Calvin student-athletes have received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors in the women’s at-large college division. Juniors Melissa Oosterhouse and Monica Bressler have been named to the all-district first team.
