Women’s tennis falls 5-0 at Hope in MIAA Tournament Semifinals

HOLLAND, Mich. – The Calvin women’s tennis team saw its season come to an end Thursday, May 2, on the campus of Hope College.  The Knights fell 5-0 to the Flying Dutch in the MIAA Tournament semifinals.  In a match played at Vande Poel-Herrings Stadium, Hope won all three doubles flights.  Calvin did put up a fight in two of the three flights, however.  Seniors Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) fell to Melissa Bieri (Holland/Holland Christian) and Anna Garcia (Battle Creek/Lakeview) 8-6 at second doubles.  Calvin sophomores Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) and Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) were defeated by Stephanie Huffman (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) and Andrea Pickelman (Marshall/Marshall) 8-5 at third doubles.  Hope needed to win only two singles flights to clinch the match.  The Flying Dutch won the first two matches off the courts.  Casey Baxter (Saline/Saline) defeated Ipema 6-1, 6-1 at second singles.  Leah LaBarge (Hudsonville/Hudsonville) defeated Calvin junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) 6-2, 6-1 at fourth singles.  The match was played to decision.  Calvin finishes its season with a 6-11 record including a 4-4 mark in MIAA regular season play.

Megan Visser Named MIAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association named Calvin’s Megan Visser its Player of the Week in women’s tennis for matches played through April 27. Visser, a sophomore from Kalamazoo, won the deciding match at No. 1 singles in Calvin’s 5-4 victory over Saint Mary’s, winning the match 7-5, 1-6, 6-3. The win secured a spot for the Knights in this week’s MIAA tournament. Visser is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career. Visser has served as Calvin’s No. 1 singles player the past two years. She is currently 7-11 in singles play heading into an MIAA Tournament semifinal match on Thursday at Hope scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

Women’s Tennis Gains MIAA Tournament Berth - To Travel to Hope Next Thursday for Semis

Although the Calvin women’s tennis team was idle on Saturday, the Knights gained a berth into the four-team MIAA Tournament next week. The Knights were the recipient of a Kalamazoo victory over Saint Mary’s that allowed Calvin to finish in a tie for fourth place in the final MIAA women’s tennis standings with Saint Mary’s. Calvin gains the fourth and final spot for the MIAA Tournament however as the Knights defeated Saint Mary’s 5-4 earlier this week to gain the head-to-head tie-breaker edge. Calvin will travel to top-seeded Hope for a semifinal match next Thursday at 4 p.m.

Women’s tennis remains in MIAA Tournament hunt with 5-4 win over Saint Mary’s

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Calvin women’s tennis team kept its MIAA Tournament hopes alive Wed. afternoon with a thrilling 5-4 come from behind victory over the Belles of Saint Mary’s College.  Calvin finishes its regular season with a 6-10 record and a 4-4 mark in MIAA play.  Calvin fell behind early, losing at first and second doubles.  Calvin rebounded to win third, fourth and sixth singles.  The clinching match came at first singles.  Sophomore Megan Visser defeated Mary Catherine Faller in three sets by scores of 7-5, 1-6, 6-3.  Calvin needs a Kalamazoo win over Saint Mary’s Sat. to earn the fourth and final seed in the MIAA Tournament.  If the Belles defeat the Hornets, Saint Mary’s will earn the fourth seed.

ANGOLA, IN - The Calvin women’s tennis team remained in the hunt for the MIAA Tournament with a 6-3 win at Trine Mon. afternoon.  Calvin improves to 5-10 on the season and 3-4 in the MIAA.  Calvin earned victories at first and third doubles.  Sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and junior Benthany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) defeated junior Jessica Huhnke (Newburgh, IN/Castle) and Chrissy Uphaus (Centerville, IN/Centerville HS) 9-8 (7-4).  Sophomores Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) and Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) won their third doubles flight 8-3.  Ipema won a very tight match at second singles, defeating Uphaus 7-6(5), 7-6(5).  Roode defeated Erin Kwaske (Jackson/Western) 6-1, 6-2 at third singles.  Reitsma and senior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) won at fifth and sixth singles respectively at fifth and sixth singles.  With Calvin’s win, the Knights still have a chance to earn the fourth seed to the MIAA Tournament.  Calvin needs to defeat Saint Mary’s on Apr. 24, and cheer for the Kalamazoo Hornets to defeat the Belles on Sat.

OLIVET, MI - The Calvin women’s tennis team won its second consecutive MIAA match with an 8-1 victory over Olivet Sat. afternoon.  Calvin improves to 4-11 on the season and 2-4 in the MIAA.  Calvin won all three doubles flights.  The first doubles flight came down to a single game, but junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) defeated Caitlin LaValley (Battle Creek/Pennefield) and Jennifer Lightner (Eaton Rapids/Charlotte) 9-7.  Seniors Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) and Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) won 8-0 at second doubles while sophomores Samantha Reitsma (Northpointe Christian) and Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) won the third doubles flight 8-1.  Calvin won all but one singles flight, and won flights two through five in convincing fashion.  No Knight gave up more than two games in any of the five matches they won.  Calvin returns to action Mon., Apr. 22, when it travels to Angola, Ind. to face Trine in a amtch scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Calvin College women’s tennis team earned its first MIAA victory Sat. afternoon.  The Knights defeated the Bulldogs of Adrian College 8-1 in a match played inside the Huizenga Track and Tennis Building.  Calvin got off to a slow start in doubles, but was able to win two of the three flights.  Seniors Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) won the second doubles flight 8-6 over Jordenne Ferenczi (Niles/Brandywine) and Karen Kienitz (Hemlock/Hemlock HS).  Sophomores Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) and Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) defeated Jordan Grant (Taylor/Allen Park) and Justine Hanson (Fenton/Fenton HS) 8-4 at third doubles.  The Knights swept all six singles flights to win the match 8-1.  Sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) picked up a victory at first singles, defeating Arielle Williams (Southfield/Birmingham Seaholm) 6-1, 6-1.  Ipema won her match at second singles 7-5, 6-2 over Morgan Spencer (Plymouth/Plymouth-Salem). Roode, junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) and Reitsma won their matches at third, fourth and fifth singles respectively without giving up more than two games in either match.  Doezema defeated Grant 6-4, 6-3 at sixth singles.  Calvin improves to 3-12 on the season and 1-4 in the MIAA.  The Knights return to action Apr. 20, when they travel to Olivet for a match against the Comets.

Calvin C Club to Hold First-Ever Calvin Athletics Awards Night May 8

In Calvin athletics, what was the best play of the year? Who were the male and female newcomers of the year? What was the most exceptional performance in an individual event? Come to the arena on May 8 to find out. On Wednesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the Van Noord Arena, the Calvin C Club welcomes student-athletes, coaches and fans of the Knights to an evening of celebrating Calvin athletics. There will be desserts and refreshments, trophy displays, a “Year in Review” video and the presentation of 13 awards, culminating in the Tiemersma and Beré Awards for female and male athlete of the year. Registration for current Calvin student-athletes is available through their coaches, and registration for all others is available online now! Cost is just $10 for guests (reduced to $5 for current students and C Club members). Business attire is desired.

Women’s tennis falls to Kalamazoo 7-2

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - A week after the Calvin men’s tennis team defeated the Hornets of Kalamazoo for the first time in school history, the women’s tennis team faced off against the Hornets.  Because of rainy and wet weather conditions, the match was played inside the Huizinga Track and Tennis Center.  The Knights were able to win the third doubles fight as well as sixth singles, but fell to Kalamazoo 7-2 overall.  Calvin sophomores Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) and Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) defeated Kelsey Moran (Grand Blanc/Grand Blanc HS) and Cheryl Zhang (Ada/Forest Hills Eastern) 8-6 at third doubles.  Seniors Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) fell to Jenna Riehl (St. Joseph/St. Joseph HS) and Anna Latala (Grosse Ile/Grosse Ile HS) 9-7 at second doubles.  The top four singles flights were all competitive, but the Hornets won each in straight sets without surrendering more than four games in any set.  Reitsma fell to Olivia Bouchard (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard South) 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 at fifth singles.  Doezema came up with Calvin’s lone singles point.  She lost the first set in a tiebreak, but came back to win the next two - defeating Zhang 6-7(2), 7-5, 10-1 at six singles.  Calvin falls to 2-12 on the season and 0-4 in MIAA play.  The Knights return to action Sat., Apr. 13, when they host the Bulldogs of Adrian College.  The match is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.

Women’s Tennis Drops 6-3 Match to Alma

LANSING - The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped a 6-3 conference match to Alma on Tuesday at the Michigan Athletic Club in Lansing. The Knights are now 2-11 overall and 0-3 in the MIAA. Alma swept three tight doubles matches to gain a 3-0 lead. In singles play, sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) picked up a tough three-set win at No. 1 singles while sophomore Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) was also a winner in three sets at No. 2 singles.  Calvin’s other singles winner was senior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 5 singles. Calvin is back in action on April 10 when it hosts Kalamazoo at 4 p.m.
