Women’s Tennis Defeated by Coe College and Wheaton on Weekend Swing

WHEATON, IL – The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped an 8-1 decision to regionally-ranked Coe College of Iowa on Saturday to dip to 1-2 on the year. On Friday, Calvin dropped a 9-0 decision to regionally-ranked Wheaton College of Illinois. Calvin’s lone point in the loss to Coe came at number-four singles as freshman Ellie Benzel (San Dimas, CA/San Dimas HS) as she claimed a hard-fought 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 win over Diannah Watson. Calvin returns to action next Friday when it hosts Aquinas in a non-conference dual match.

Women’s Tennis Opens Season with 8-1 Win Over Cornerstone

The Calvin women’s tennis team opened its season on Friday with an 8-1 non-conference dual match victory over Cornerstone. The match was the opening match for first-year head coach Kevin Van Haitsma at the helm of the Knights. With a roster of just five players, Cornerstone conceded matches at three doubles and six singles before the match began. Up 2-0, Calvin then split the remaining doubles points as Calvin’s number-one tandem of junior Megan Visser and freshman Claire Spoelhof defeated Heidi Boesl and Ashley Greene 8-3. Cornerstone’s number-two squad of Janie Silvers and Allison Rusticus gained a point back by defeating Calvin’s Bethany Zoerhof and Ellie Benzel 8-4. Calvin then claimed the remaining singles points as Visser defeated Boesl 6-0, 6-0 at one singles; Spoelhof defeated Nicole Kunnen 6-4, 7-6 at two singles, Zoerhof defeated Silvers 6-0, 6-1 at three singles, Benzel defeated Rusticus 6-1, 6-1 at four singles and freshman Liz Turner defeated Ashley Green 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles. Friday’s match was played inside Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Calvin returns to action next Friday when it travels to Wheaton College (IL) for a match against the Thunder. Calvin will then face Coe the following afternoon in Wheaton, Illinois.

MIAA Commissioner David Neilson to Retire at Conclusion of 2013-14 Academic Year

ALBION, Mich. – David L. Neilson, the commissioner of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association since 2002, has announced he will retire from the position at the conclusion of the 2013-14 academic year. The announcement of Commissioner Neilson’s retirement came Tuesday from Dr. Eileen Wilson-Oyelaran, president of Kalamazoo College and vice chairwoman of the MIAA Presidents’ Council.  He is the eighth and third-longest serving commissioner in the MIAA’s 126-year history. Commissioner Neilson and his wife, Karen, live in Royal Oak. They have four children and five grandchildren. The MIAA is the nation’s oldest collegiate athletic conference, founded in 1888. The MIAA consists of nine private colleges from Michigan and northern Indiana. Member institutions are Adrian College, Albion College, Alma College, Calvin College, Hope College, Kalamazoo College, Olivet College, Saint Mary’s College and Trine University.

Calvin Tennis Team/Players Receive ITA All-Academic Honors

The Calvin College women’s tennis team has once again received Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Honors. In addition, four members of the Calvin women’s tennis team have received ITA All-Academic honors. The Calvin women’s tennis team was named a 2013 ITA All-Academic Team for achieving a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above. Calvin had had a 3.503 cumulative GPA this year. The members of the Calvin women’s tennis team that received individual honors included senior Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS), sophomore Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian HS), sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) and freshman Anneke Knot (Flossmoor, IL/Illiana Christian HS). To receive the award, individuals must earn a varsity letter in tennis, carry at least a 3.5 grade point average for the 2012-13 academic year, and be enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).

Calvin Scholar-Athletes Named to MIAA Academic Honor Roll

The 2012-13 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic - Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and a record 151 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list.The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2012-13 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom.This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years. Of the students, seven are from Calvin.The seven Calvin scholar-athletes named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for a fourth straight year are seniors Job Christiansen (New Ipswich, NH/Mascenic Regional HS), Eric Doornbos (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS), Matt DeBoer (Hudsonville, MI/Covenant Christian HS), Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS), Kelsey Irwin (Fraser, MI, /Fraser HS), Dan Kerr (Petoskey/Petoskey HS) and Greg Whittle (Galesburg, IL/Galesburg HS).

Calvin lands record 11 teams on MIAA Team GPA List

MIAA Team GPA List

The Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges present the MIAA Team GPA Award every year. This award recognizes conference athletic teams for performance in the classroom of a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale). During the recently completed 2012-13 school year, a record 11 of Calvin’s athletic teams achieved this distinction.Seven of Calvin’s women’s teams received the MIAA Team GPA Award while four of its men’s teams also achieved the feat. Calvin’s teams receiving the honor are as follows; women’s cross country, women’s volleyball, women’s tennis, women’s basketball, men’s cross country, women’s soccer, women’s track and field, men’s tennis, women’s swimming and diving, men’s golf and men’s basketball.

Calvin Finishes 15th in Final Division III Learfield Director’s Cup Standings

Final Director's Cup Standings

For the 18th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final NCAA III Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings, finishing 15th in the nation in Division III in 2012-13 with a total of 651.0 points. Calvin is one of only six schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level.Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga. Williams won the title as the best athletics program in the nation in Division III by winning with a score of 1,273.75 points. The Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and Learfield Sports to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country, and is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events.

Kevin Van Haitsma Named Head Coach of Calvin Women’s Tennis Program

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Kevin Van Haitsma has been named the head coach of the Calvin women’s tennis program. Van Haitsma takes over the reins from Dr. Jerry Bergsma who will remain at Calvin as its head women’s golf coach and as a professor in the Calvin kinesiology department. A 2005 Calvin College graduate, Van Haitsma is no stranger to the Calvin tennis program. While a student at Calvin, he was a four-year member of the Calvin men’s tennis, earning a spot on the All-MIAA first team in 2002, 2003 and 2004. Van Haitsma was a three-year starter at No. 1 singles before suffering an off-season injury prior to his senior year. Courageously, Van Haitsma fought back to not only play his senior year in 2005, but also work his way up to the No. 2 singles spot. His comeback story was profiled on the Calvin website at: Kevin Van Haitsma Knightfile Story Van Haitsma was graduated from Calvin in 2005 with a double major of business and physical education. He is a native of Hudsonville and a graduate of Hudsonville Unity Christian High School. He later served as an assistant coach with the Calvin women’s tennis team under Bergsma from November of 2005 through the conclusion of the 2009 season.
