Women’s tennis defeats Olivet 8-1

OLIVET, MI - The Calvin women’s tennis team won its second consecutive MIAA match with an 8-1 victory over Olivet Sat. afternoon.  Calvin improves to 4-11 on the season and 2-4 in the MIAA.  Calvin won all three doubles flights.  The first doubles flight came down to a single game, but junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) defeated Caitlin LaValley (Battle Creek/Pennefield) and Jennifer Lightner (Eaton Rapids/Charlotte) 9-7.  Seniors Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) and Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) won 8-0 at second doubles while sophomores Samantha Reitsma (Northpointe Christian) and Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) won the third doubles flight 8-1.  Calvin won all but one singles flight, and won flights two through five in convincing fashion.  No Knight gave up more than two games in any of the five matches they won.  Calvin returns to action Mon., Apr. 22, when it travels to Angola, Ind. to face Trine in a amtch scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.

Women’s tennis earns first MIAA win with 8-1 victory against Adrian

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Calvin College women’s tennis team earned its first MIAA victory Sat. afternoon.  The Knights defeated the Bulldogs of Adrian College 8-1 in a match played inside the Huizenga Track and Tennis Building.  Calvin got off to a slow start in doubles, but was able to win two of the three flights.  Seniors Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) won the second doubles flight 8-6 over Jordenne Ferenczi (Niles/Brandywine) and Karen Kienitz (Hemlock/Hemlock HS).  Sophomores Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) and Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) defeated Jordan Grant (Taylor/Allen Park) and Justine Hanson (Fenton/Fenton HS) 8-4 at third doubles.  The Knights swept all six singles flights to win the match 8-1.  Sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) picked up a victory at first singles, defeating Arielle Williams (Southfield/Birmingham Seaholm) 6-1, 6-1.  Ipema won her match at second singles 7-5, 6-2 over Morgan Spencer (Plymouth/Plymouth-Salem). Roode, junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) and Reitsma won their matches at third, fourth and fifth singles respectively without giving up more than two games in either match.  Doezema defeated Grant 6-4, 6-3 at sixth singles.  Calvin improves to 3-12 on the season and 1-4 in the MIAA.  The Knights return to action Apr. 20, when they travel to Olivet for a match against the Comets.

Calvin C Club to Hold First-Ever Calvin Athletics Awards Night May 8

In Calvin athletics, what was the best play of the year? Who were the male and female newcomers of the year? What was the most exceptional performance in an individual event? Come to the arena on May 8 to find out. On Wednesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the Van Noord Arena, the Calvin C Club welcomes student-athletes, coaches and fans of the Knights to an evening of celebrating Calvin athletics. There will be desserts and refreshments, trophy displays, a “Year in Review” video and the presentation of 13 awards, culminating in the Tiemersma and Beré Awards for female and male athlete of the year. Registration for current Calvin student-athletes is available through their coaches, and registration for all others is available online now! Cost is just $10 for guests (reduced to $5 for current students and C Club members). Business attire is desired.

Women’s tennis falls to Kalamazoo 7-2

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - A week after the Calvin men’s tennis team defeated the Hornets of Kalamazoo for the first time in school history, the women’s tennis team faced off against the Hornets.  Because of rainy and wet weather conditions, the match was played inside the Huizinga Track and Tennis Center.  The Knights were able to win the third doubles fight as well as sixth singles, but fell to Kalamazoo 7-2 overall.  Calvin sophomores Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) and Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) defeated Kelsey Moran (Grand Blanc/Grand Blanc HS) and Cheryl Zhang (Ada/Forest Hills Eastern) 8-6 at third doubles.  Seniors Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) fell to Jenna Riehl (St. Joseph/St. Joseph HS) and Anna Latala (Grosse Ile/Grosse Ile HS) 9-7 at second doubles.  The top four singles flights were all competitive, but the Hornets won each in straight sets without surrendering more than four games in any set.  Reitsma fell to Olivia Bouchard (Glen Ellyn, IL/Glenbard South) 2-6, 6-3, 10-7 at fifth singles.  Doezema came up with Calvin’s lone singles point.  She lost the first set in a tiebreak, but came back to win the next two - defeating Zhang 6-7(2), 7-5, 10-1 at six singles.  Calvin falls to 2-12 on the season and 0-4 in MIAA play.  The Knights return to action Sat., Apr. 13, when they host the Bulldogs of Adrian College.  The match is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.

Women’s Tennis Drops 6-3 Match to Alma

LANSING - The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped a 6-3 conference match to Alma on Tuesday at the Michigan Athletic Club in Lansing. The Knights are now 2-11 overall and 0-3 in the MIAA. Alma swept three tight doubles matches to gain a 3-0 lead. In singles play, sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian HS) picked up a tough three-set win at No. 1 singles while sophomore Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian HS) was also a winner in three sets at No. 2 singles.  Calvin’s other singles winner was senior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) at No. 5 singles. Calvin is back in action on April 10 when it hosts Kalamazoo at 4 p.m.

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - The Calvin women’s tennis team suffered its second conference defeat Sat. afternoon, falling to rival Hope 9-0 at Strikwerda Tennis Center.  The Knights lost each flight, and fall to 0-2 in the MIAA and 2-10 on the season.  The Flying Dutch got out to an early lead, and won all three doubles flights.  Former Hudsonville teammates Leah LaBarge and Carli Capestany defeated junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) and sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) 8-2 at first doubles.  Melissa Bieri (Holland/Holland Christian) and Anna Garcia (Battle Creek/Lakeview) defeated Calvin seniors Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) 8-3 at second doubles.  Andrea Pickelman (Marshall/Marshall HS) and Stephanie Huffman (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) defeated sophomores Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) and Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) 8-4 at third doubles.  The Knights were unable to win any singles flights.  Visser kept the first set close with Capestany, but eventually fell 6-4, 6-0.  Roode, Doezema and Courtney Selvius (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) each fell 6-3 in the first set of the third, fifth and sixth singles flights respectively.  Calvin returns to action Apr. 2 when it travels to Alma to face the Scots at 4:00 p.m.

ALBION, MI - The Calvin women’s tennis team opened up conference play with an 8-1 loss at Albion.  The Knights fell behind 3-0 after doubles, and were able to win one singles flight.  In doubles, Irene Chen (Shenzen, China/Apple Valley) and Marissa Cloutier (Grosse Ile/Grosse Ile HS) defeated sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and senior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) 8-1 at first doubles.  Margaux Kabodian (Novi/Mercy) and Heather Vogt (Saline/Saline HS) defeated seniors Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) and Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) 8-3 at second doubles.  Katie Blumberg (Farmington Hills/Farmington) and Leah Saurman (Kentwood/East Kentwood) defeated sophomores Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) and Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) 8-5 at third doubles.  Calvin got its lone point of the match at fifth singles.  Doezema defeated Marissa Messenger (East Lansing/East Lansing HS) 6-2, 3-6, 10-6.  All other flights ended in two sets, but some were close Briton victories.  Blumberg defeated Roode 6-2, 6-4 at third singles.  Heather Vogt (Saline/Saline HS) defeated Zoerhof 6-2, 6-4 at fourth singles.  Calvin, now 2-9, 0-1 MIAA on the season, will return to action Sat., Mar. 30, when it takes on the Flying Dutch of Hope College.  The match is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.

Women’s tennis concludes spring break trip with a pair of defeats

ORLANDO, FL – The Calvin women’s tennis team finished up a match with Hamilton College (NY) Fri. after rain delayed the match on Wed.  The Knights also faced Grinnell College (IA) on the same day.  Calvin fell to Hamilton 6-3 in the morning and dropped a 7-2 decision to Grinnell in the afternoon.  In the match with the Continentals of Hamilton, Calvin won two of the first three doubles matches, but could muster only one singles victory.  In doubles, the Calvin first doubles team of junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) and sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) won a tight set with Liz Detwiler and Meg Lee 9-7.  Seniors Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) fell to Mira Khanna and Bella Schoning 8-2 at second doubles.  Sophomores Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) and Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) defeated Aislinn Shea and Melissa Mann 8-5 at third doubles.  Calvin’s lone singles win came at first singles.  Visser defeated Khanna 6-3, 7-6(6).  The fifth and six singles flights were close matches.  Rachel Friedman defeated Reitsma 6-4, 6-3 at fifth singles.  Shea beat Doezema in a three set thriller by scores of 6-3, 4-6, 10-7.  In the match with the Pioneers of Grinnell, Calvin won one of the three doubles flights as well as one of the six singles flights.  Shirlene Luk and Clothilde Thirouin defeated Zoerhof and Visser 8-4 at first doubles.  Laura Krull and Catherine Fitch defeated Ipema and Doezema 8-2 at second doubles.  Roode and Reitsma defeated Emma MacDonald and Julia Rumley 8-6 at third doubles.  All six singles flights needed only two sets to complete.  The Knights’ lone victory came from Doezema, who defeated Emily Groth 6-2, 6-1.  Calvin ends its spring break trip with a 0-5 record.  The Knights open up their conference season with a match against Albion on Mar. 26 slated to start at 4:00 p.m.

Women’s tennis falls to William Smith 7-2

ORLANDO, FL - After a matchup with Hamilton College was postponed due to rain, the Knights took to the courts Thurs., Mar. 21, for a match against William Smith (NY).  The Herons defeated the Knights 7-2.  Calvin was able to win one of the three doubles matches.  Seniors Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) and Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) defeated Remy Raevsky and Hallsey Leighton 8-6.  Kiara Ocasio and Teru Greene defeated Calvin junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) and sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) 8-5 at first doubles.  Kate O’Connor and Casey Nicoletti defeated sophomores Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) and Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) 8-2 at third doubles.  All six singles flights needed only two sets to complete.  Unfortunately for the Knights, five of them went to the Herons.  Calvin’s lone victory in singles same from the fifth singles flight.  Reitsma outlasted Sydney Arsenault 7-5, 7-5.  Visser came close to winning a set against Greene at first singles, but suffered a 7-5, 6-4 defeat.  Calvin concludes its spring break trip Fri., Mar. 22, against Grinnell College.

ORLANDO, FL – The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped its first two contests of the spring break trip, falling 6-3 to Puget Sound (OR) and 5-4 to Otterbein (OH). In the match against the Loggers of Puget Sound, the Knights fell behind early, losing all three doubles flights.  Maddie Thiese and Allison Embernate defeated sophomore Megan Visser (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and junior Bethany Zoerhof (Holland/Holland Christian) 9-7 at first doubles.  Logan Thompson and Marissa Friedman defeated seniors Jordan Ipema (Kalamazoo/Kalamazoo Christian) and Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) 8-2 at second doubles.  Jenna Gersen and Josie Dow defeated sophomores Samantha Reitsma (Grand Rapids/Northpointe Christian) and Ali Roode (Hudsonville/Unity Christian) 8-6 in the third doubles flight.  Calvin split the six singles flights, winning first, third and fifth singles.  Visser defeated Thiese 6-3, 6-2 at first singles.  Roode pulled out a three set victory, defeating Thompson 6-3, 2-6, 10-7 at third singles.  Reitsma defeated Dow 6-1, 7-5 at fifth singles.  Doezema came close to defeating Embernate at sixth singles, but fell in three sets by scores of 5-7. 7-5, 10-3.  In the matchup against Otterbein, Calvin fell behind 2-1 after the doubles.  Julie Stroyne and Sammi Kruger defeated Visser and Zoerhof 8-3 at first doubles.  Emma Krummel and Adrien Leatherwood defeated the Calvin duo of Ipema and Doezema 8-6.  The Knights’ lone win in doubles came from Roode and Reitsma defeating Kelsey Leachko and Emily Harper 8-2.  Calvin split the six singles flights.  Roode defeated Alana Cheplowitz 6-1, 6-4 at third singles.  Zoerhof defeated Krummel 7-6(0), 6-2 at fourth singles.  Doezema defeated Leadko 6-1, 6-4 at sixth singles.  Calvin continues its spring break trip Mar. 20, when it faces Hamilton.
