Women’s Tennis Drops First Two Matches in Orlando

ORLANDO, FL - The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped a pair of matches on Monday to dip to 1-7 on the year. Calvin opened the day with a 9-0 loss to regionally-ranked Grinnell College and then suffered a 6-3 loss to Hamilton College later in the day. In the loss to Hamilton, Calvin received a 7-6, 6-3 victory from Megan Visser at No. 1 singles and a 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 win from freshman Ali Roode at No. 6 singles. Visser and Samantha Rietema also claimed an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles. Calvin is back in action on Wednesday when it faces Hamline University at 9 a.m.
Women’s Tennis Clipped by Davenport 7-2

Calvin dipped to 1-4 on the year with a 7-2 loss to Davenport Friday night. Freshman Alli Roode was a winner at No. 6 singles while sophomore Lauren Schlagenhauf and junior Jordan Ipema were winners at No. 3 doubles. Davenport entered the match ranked 24th nationally in NAIA women’s tennis. Calvin returns to action on March 19 when it takes on Grinnell College in a match in Orlando, Florida.
Women’s Tennis Drops 8-1 Decision to Aquinas

The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped an 8-1 non-conference decision to Aquinas Thursday afternoon at the Riverview Racquet Club. Calvin’s only point came at No. 6 singles as freshman Alli Roode picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win. Roode is now 4-0 on the year. As a team, Calvin drops to 1-3 on the season with the loss. Calvin returns to action next Friday when it takes on Davenport University in a non-conference match at 6 p.m.

WHEATON, IL - The Calvin women’s tennis team dropped a pair of matches over the weekend to regionally-ranked foes. On Friday, Calvin fell at Wheaton 8-1 and then dropped an 8-1 decision on Saturday to Coe (IA) in a match played at Wheaton. Wheaton enetered the weekend ranked eighth in the latest Central Region rankings while Coe was ranked ninth. Freshman Alli Roode picked up wins for Calvin in both matches, claiming a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles against Wheaton and then recording a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles against Coe. Calvin returns to action on Thursday when it faces Aquinas College at the Riverview Racquet Club at 2 p.m.
Women’s Tennis Opens up Season With 9-0 Win Over Cornerstone

Calvin opened up its season Friday night with a clean sweep of Cornerstone, 9-0. The matches were played inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. Calvin opened up the match in doubles play, where the first doubles team of Megan Visser and Samantha Reitsma defeated Amy Fouty and Hanna Guest 8-1. The second doubles team of Bethany Zoerhof and Elise Doezema won by a score of 8-3. Rounding out the doubles was Emily Swets and Nicole Sheppard who defeated Kelly Gampel and Carrie Carr 8-0. Calvin continued to roll in singles play, sweeping all six flights.The Knights are now 1-0 and look forward to next weekend when they travel down to Wheaton for matches on Friday and Saturday.

As part of the Division III National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Calvin athletics recently joined a Division III partnership with the United States’ Special Olympic Committee, adding a valuable opportunity to the athletic department’s already service-driven outlook. The SAAC is an NCAA organization tiered at the national, conference, and school level. The national, and governing, branch of the organization, seeks to “to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image,” according to the organization’s website.
Women’s Tennis Team Receives ITA All-Academic Award

For the fourth consecutive year, the Calvin women’s tennis team has received the ITA All-Academic Award. All four awards have come under current head coach Jerry Bergsma. In order to receive the award, a team needed to maintain a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above for the 2010-11 academic year. In addition five members of the Calvin women’s tennis team have received ITA Scholar-Athlete academic honors for maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or above during the 2010-11 academic year. The five individuals from Calvin are seniors Michell Busscher, Melissa Ooosterhouse and Kaitlin Spoelhof, sophomore Jordan Ipema and freshman Emily Swets.

The 2010-11 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 111 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list. The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2010-11 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom. This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years.
Of the students, 10 are from Calvin.
Nine Calvin Teams Receive MIAA Team GPA Award

Nine Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA’s Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2010-11 academic year. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2009-10 academic year. Seven of Calvin’s women’s teams received the MIAA Team GPA Award while the men’s cross country team and men’s golf teams also achieved the feat. Calvin teams that received the honor this year include: the women’s cross country team, women’s soccer team, men’s cross country team, women’s volleyball team, women’s track and field team, women’s tennis team, women’s swimming and diving team, men’s tennis team and women’ basketball team.

Capital One At-Large Academic All-America Teams
Calvin College seniors Melissa Oosterhouse and Monica Bressler have been named Capital One Academic All-Americans in the women’s college at-large division as selected by the College Sports Information Director’s Association of America (CoSIDA). Oosterhouse has been named to the first team while Bressler has been named to the third team. The Women’s At-Large program for Academic All-America includes the sports of bowling, crew, fencing, field hockey, golf, gymnastics, ice hockey, lacrosse, skiing, tennis and water polo.Combined, Calvin has now had its athletes receive CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades 89 times including 58 times in the last 14 years.
