Calvin Women’s Tennis Team Opens Play at Strikwerda Courts With 8-1 Win Over Olivet

The first-ever tennis match at the newly refurbished Strikwerda Tennis Courts took place on Wednesday and the regionally-ranked Calvin women’s tennis team came away with an 8-1 victory over visiting Olivet. Ranked 13th in the most recent ITA Division III Central Region rankings, Calvin is now 4-1 overall. The victory will serve as a precursor to Calvin’s spring break trip with the Knights scheduled to leave for Orlando, Florida, on Friday. The Calvin Sports Information Department caught up with Calvin women’s tennis coach Jerry Bergsma after Wednesday’s victory over Olivet and talked about the upcoming spring trip and the MIAA season yet to come. Women’s Tennis Defeats Ferris State 5-4 in Non-Conference Match Inside Huizenga T & T Center

The regionally-ranked Calvin women’s tennis team picked up a 5-4 victory over Division II Ferris State University Tuesday afternoon inside Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. The victory marked Calvin’s second win in the last three years over the Bulldogs. Calvin defeated Ferris State 6-3 in 2008 with Ferris State defeating Calvin 6-3 in 2009. Calvin is now 3-1 on the year.
Women’s Tennis Defeats North Central/Falls to Wheaton Over Weekend

The regionally-ranked Calvin women’s tennis teams split a pair of non-conference matches this past weekend, defeating North Central (IL) 8-1 on Friday night and then falling at nationally-ranked Wheaton (IL) 6-3 on Saturday evening.
Ranked 13th in the most recent ITA Division III Central Region rankings, the Knights are now 2-1 overall.
Women’s Tennis Opens Season With 9-0 Win Over Davenport

The Calvin women’s tennis team opened its 2010 season with a 9-0 non-conference win over visiting Davenport University Friday afternoon inside Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center. The Knights return to action on February 26, traveling to North Central College (IL) for a non-conference match.
Calvin Tennis Teams/Players Receive ITA All-Academic Honors

The Calvin men’s and women’s tennis teams have received the the prestigious All-Academic Team Award from the International Tennis Association (ITA). The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). The men’s team is doing so for the sixth straight year while the women’s team is doing so for the second straight season.

2008-09 Calvin MIAA Academic Honor Roll Listing
A record 10 Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2008-09 academic year. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2008-09 academic year.
Meanwhile 15 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for the fourth straight year.

ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Teams
GRAND RAPIDS—Three Calvin student-athletes have received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors in the women’s at-large college division. Senior Cara Van Woerkom and sophomore Melissa Oosterhouse have been named to the all-district first team while senior Erica Deur has been named to the all-district second team.
As members of the first team, Van Woerkom and Oosterhouse now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America ® consideration.

KALAMAZOO – For the second consecutive year, Calvin’s bid for an MIAA Tournament title and a trip to the NCAA III Tournament came up just short as the Knights were defeated by rival Hope 5-4 in the MIAA Tournament Championship final. The victory was the 14th straight for Hope which claimed the outright league championship with the win along with the league’s NCAA III Tournament bid. It also marked Hope’s second 5-4 win over Calvin this year.
Women’s Tennis Advances to MIAA Tournament Championship Final

KALAMAZOO – For the second straight year, the Calvin women’s tennis team has advanced to the MIAA Tournament finals. The Knights advanced to the tournament finals with a 7-0 first round win over Olivet and a 5-3 semifinal victory over host Kalamazoo.
The Knights will face rival Hope in the championship final at noon at Kalamazoo’s Stowe Stadium. The winner will receive the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament. In the earlier matchup of the year Hope defeated Calvin 5-4. Hope (18-5) advanced to Friday’s title tilt with a 5-0 first round win over Adrian and a 5-0 win over Albion in the MIAA Tournament semifinals.
Calvin Baseball Doubleheader With Olivet Postponed For Thursday

The Calvin baseball doubleheader scheduled for Thursday has been postponed until Friday, May 1, because of rain. The doubleheader on Friday is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. at Olivet. The two teams will then play at Calvin on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Rain in West Michigan has also moved the MIAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Tournaments indoors. Updated sites and times can be found on the MIAA website at:MIAA Website
