ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Women's At-Large Teams

GRAND RAPIDS - Two Calvin student-athletes have received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honors in the women’s at-large college division. Juniors Melissa Oosterhouse and Monica Bressler have been named to the all-district first team. As members of the first team, Oosterhouse and Bressler now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America consideration.

CHICAGO, IL - The most successful season in Calvin women’s tennis history came to a close on Friday afternoon as the Knights were defeated 5-2 by Washington University in a second round match played at the University of Chicago’s Stagg Tennis Courts. Calvin closes out its season with an overall record 19-4 - establishing a school record for victories in a season. Calvin’s journey through the NCAA III Tournament this week was the first in school history with the Knights also recording their first-ever NCAA III Tournament win on Thursday with a 5-0 first round triumph over Baldwin-Wallace College.

Women’s Tennis Claims First Round NCAA III Tournament Win Over Baldwin-Wallace

CHICAGO, IL - The Calvin women’s tennis team picked up a 5-0 first round NCAA III Tournament victory over Baldwin-Wallace College Thursday morning at a regional hosted by the University of Chicago. Calvin took early momentum with three straight doubles victories and then clinched the victory with victories from junior Michelle Busscher at No. 5 singles and junior Melissa Oosterhouse at No. 1 singles. Calvin will face Washington University of St. Louis in a second round match on Friday at 10 a.m. (CST).

Melissa Oosterhouse Selected to Compete in NCAA III Singles Tournament

On Thursday, Calvin College junior Melissa Oosterhouse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) will make her first appearance in the NCAA III Team Tournament in women’s tennis as the Calvin women’s tennis team will face Baldwin-Wallace College in a first round match at 10 a.m. (CST) at the University of Chicago. On May 28, Oosterhouse will also become the first Calvin women’s tennis player to compete in the NCAA III Singles Tournament. Oosterhouse received a bid to the 32-player NCAA III Singles Tournament Wednesday afternoon. The singles tournament will take place at the Battleground Tennis Complex in Fredericksburg, Virginia. The tournament will be hosted by Mary Washington University.

The Calvin women’s tennis team will head to the Windy City to compete in a six-team NCAA III regional hosted by the University of Chicago later this week. Calvin (17-3) will face Baldwin-Wallace (18-7) in a first round NCAA III Tournament match on Thursday in Chicago. The winner of Thursday’s first round match will face Washington University of St. Louis (13-5), ranked 21st nationally. Ranked third nationally, Chicago (20-3) will face the winner of a first-round match between Webster (11-4) and Grove City (11-2). The Webster/Grove City match like the Calvin/Baldwin-Wallace match will take place on May 13 with second round play second for May 14 and third round (regional finals) action slated for May 15.

Busscher, DeGroot and VanVeen Reflect on Calvin Women’s Tennis Season - Upcoming NCAA III Tournament

The Calvin Sports Information office recently caught up with seniors Jill Van Veen and Rachel DeGroot and junior Michelle Busscher of the 2010 MIAA champion Calvin women’s tennis team for audio interviews.

Van Veen is a native of Grand Rapids and a graduate of Grand Rapids Christian High School majoring in sports management with a business minor. DeGroot is from Lombard, Illinois. She is a graduate of Timothy Christian High School and is majoring in nursing.

Busscher is also a nursing major. She hails from Whitehall and is a graduate of Muskegon Western Michigan Christian High School. All three have played key roles on Calvin’s run to an MIAA title and a berth in the NCAA III Tournament this spring. Calvin is currently 18-3 overall heading into NCAA III Tournament play. The NCAA III Tournament bracket will be announced on May 10.

Calvin Women’s Tennis Team Captures MIAA Tournament Title - Punches NCAA III Tournament Ticket

The Calvin women’s tennis team is NCAA III Tournament bound!! The Knights punched their post-season ticket with a 6-3 win over rival Hope in the MIAA Tournament Championship final on Saturday afternoon at West Ottawa High School. The MIAA Tournament title is Calvin’s first since 1982. At 18-3 overall, Calvin will be making its first trip to the NCAA III Tournament. The NCAA III Tournament field will be announced on May 13. The MIAA Tournament crown came on the heels of an MIAA regular season title clinched by the Knights earlier in the week. In Saturday’s win over Hope, Calvin trailed 2-1 after doubles but won five straight singles flights to clinch the match. -

Women’s Tennis Advances to Championship Final of MIAA Tournament - Defeating Albion in Semis

HOLLAND - For the third consecutive year, the Calvin women’s tennis team has advanced to the championship final of the MIAA Tournament. The top-seeded Knights did so in dramatic fashion on Friday, defeating third-seeded Albion 6-3 in the MIAA Tournament semifinals Friday afternoon at the Holland Christian High School Tennis Courts.

Calvin will face second-seeded Hope in the MIAA Tournament finals at 10:30 a.m. indoors at Hope’s DeWitt Tennis Center with the winner receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament.

Women’s Tennis Captures First MIAA Title Since 1982 With Victory Over Alma

ALMA—For the first time since 1982, the Calvin women’s tennis team has captured an MIAA championship. The Knights clinched the outright league crown with a 9-0 win at Alma Monday afternoon. The Knights finish the MIAA regular season 8-0, marking just the second time in school history that the Knights swept through the league dual match schedule unbeaten. Calvin’s only other unbeaten MIAA campaign came in 1981 when the Knights went 6-0. Calvin captured the 1981 MIAA title outright and shared the 1982 league crown. Prior to this year, the Knights had not won a league championship since.

Calvin Women’s Tennis Team Defeats Albion 6-3 - Remains Unbeaten in MIAA Play

The nationally-ranked Calvin women’s tennis team improved to 14-3 overall and more importantly to 7-0 in MIAA competition with a 6-3 victory over Albion Thursday afternoon at the Strikwerda Tennis Courts. Calvin fell behind 2-1 after doubles play but rallied to win five of six singles flights to claim the win. Calvin will close out its MIAA dual match campaign next Monday, bidding to become the first Calvin team since 1981 to post an unbeaten MIAA dual match campaign.
