Elizabeth Counsell/Andrew Krafft Receive MIAA Swimmer/Diver of the Week Honors

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Elizabeth Counsell and Andrew Krafft its Swimmer/Diver of the Week for meets through December 3. Counsell, a junior from Indianapolis, Ind. (Heritage Christian HS), won the 100-yard breaststroke at the Calvin Invitational over the weekend with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 1:03.62.  She also finished second in the 200 breaststroke in 2:21.58, with also was a provisional qualifying time for the NCAA meet.  She also swam a :29.06 split on the breaststroke leg of the 200 medley relay and led off Calvin’s 800 freestyle relay team with an opening leg of 1:57.55. Krafft, a sophomore from Fort Wayne, Ind. (Homeschooled), won both diving events at the Calvin Invitational. He won the 1-meter diving competition with an NCAA provisional score of 515.65 points. A day later, he was again victorious, winning the men’s 3-meter competition with another NCAA provisional score of 540.90 points.  Krafft was the only double event winner from the MIAA at the Calvin invite, which featured four MIAA schools.

Calvin Men Place Fourth - Women Place Fifth in Final Standings at Calvin Winter Invitational

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams concluded competition at the three-day Calvin Winter Invitational Saturday night. On the men’s side, Calvin finished fourth in a field of eight teams with 428 points. On the women’s side, Calvin took fifth in a field of 10 teams with 392 points. The point total by the Calvin men marked its highest total in the three-year history of the Calvin Winter Invitational.
Calvin’s divers played a big role in Calvin’s high point totals at the invitational. On the men’s side, sophomore Andrew Krafft won both the one and three-meter boards, winning three-meter board with a score of 518.25 points and the one-meter board with a score of 509.20 points. In the prelims of the three-meter competition on Saturday, Krafft broke the Venema Aquatic Center pool record with a score of 540.90 points which also ranks as an NCAA III qualifying score.On the women’s side, junior Samantha Klaasen took fourth on both the one and three-meter boards, posting a score of 382.85 points on the three-meter board and an NCAA III qualifying score of 403.50 on the one-meter board.

Records Fall and NCAA III Cuts Galore on Day Two of Calvin Winter Swimming & Diving Invite

With one day of competition left at the Calvin Winter Invitational, the Calvin men’s swimming and diving team is in fourth place with 216 points while the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team is in fifth place with 210 points. Grand Valley State leads both competitions with the Laker men leading with 651.5 points while the Laker women have a first place total of 546 points. In the men’s meet, Calvin got the morning off to a bang as senior Greg Gorham blasted away his own record in the 100 breaststroke prelims, recording an NCAA III B’ cut qualifying time of 57.73. In the evening finals, Gorham took seventh with a time of 58.40. On the women’s side, junior Elizabeth Counsell had a monster swim in the 100 breaststroke, winning the event with a strong NCAA III B’ cut qualifying time of of 1:03.62 that was less than two-tenths of a second of an NCAA III A’ cut time.  Junior Stephanie Fox also had a huge night, placing second in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:54.07. Her swim came one night after she clocked an NCAA B’ cut qualifying time of 1:53.42 as the leadoff leg of Calvin’s 800 freestyle relay.
