Swimming & Diving Teams Post Dual Meet Victories Over Wheaton

Returning to action after a week of practice, the Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams hosted Wheaton Saturday afternoon. The men would take the meet by an overall score of 169-129, winning their second straight meet against the Thunder. Heading into the final event a point ahead of Wheaton, the Calvin women had to win the final event to take the meet, the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay. The Knights A relay team of Alex Dhaenes, Rachel Colasurdo, Margaret Rechel, and Stephanie Fox would take the final event in a time of 3:41.88, claiming the meet for Calvin. The women won the meet by an overall score of 147-137. Both teams are now 1-1 in dual meet competition and return to action next Friday when they host Wayne State University in non-conference dual meets.
Shelby Cloyd Named MIAA Women’s Swimmer of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin’s Shelby Cloyd and Olivet’s its MIAA Women’s Swimmer/Diver of the Week for meets through October 29.Cloyd, a junior from Kalamazoo (Plainwell HS), won the 1,000 freestyle by nearly five seconds in a dual meet against NCAA Division II power Grand Valley State University Friday. Cloyd touched the wall in a time of 10:55.28. She also swam a 1:03.04 in the 100 butterfly and swam a :26.63 on the leadoff leg of Calvin’s 200 freestyle relay. Calvin is back in action this Saturday when it hosts Wheaton in a non-conference dual meet at 1 p.m. at the Venema Aquatic Center.

Only two meets deep into a long season, the women of Calvin’s Swim and Dive team looked good Friday evening against local opponent Grand Valley State as the Knights as a team lost to the powerhouse Lakers 175-63.On the diving boards the Knights got a great performance from their number one diver, Sam Klaasen, as she finished second in both the 1 meter and 3 meter diving events with 255.60 and 236.20 points respectively. Klaasen’s performance was enough to make the national cut.
