The Calvin womenís swimming and diving team completed a stellar weekend of competition on Saturday, finishing third at its own Calvin Winter Invitational with a final team score of 593 points. Grand Valley State won the womenís competition with 1,193 points while Northern Michigan was second with 742.5 points. A highlight of the day was turned in by sophomore Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) as she broke Becky Weimaís school record in the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.04. Weimaís previous school record time was 58.47. Rookus later took third in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.38. In the 500 freestyle, junior Kathryn Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Moundsview HS) had a season-best time of 5:10.29 in the morning prelims and then took sixth in the evening finals with a time of 5:17.05. In the 200 backstroke, junior Erika Waugh (Berne, IN/South Adams HS) took fourth in a time of 2:07.77 after clocking a season-best time of 2:06.87 in the morning prelims. Junior Lexi Scott (Richmond, IN/Richmond HS) had a sixth place finish in the 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:26.82 and was later sixth in the 200 IM with a time of 2:10.74. Calvinís 200 medley relay of senior Kristy Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead HS), Rookus, Scott and freshman Adrienne Wesselius (Sioux Center, IA/Unity Christian HS) took seventh in 1:48.54 while its 400 freestyle relay team of Rookus, senior Margaret Rechel (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington HS), Kinzer and Wrobel took fourth in a time of 3:36.03. In the womenís one-meter diving, junior Rebecca Mumby (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) took fifth (347.10) while freshman Becky Freed (Rochester, Hills/Rochester Stoney Creek HS) was eighth (328.15).

Heading into the final day of competition, the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team is in third place at the Calvin Winter Invitational with 363 points. Grand Valley leads the standings with 684 points followed by Northern Michigan with 408. Calvin had a solid group of top-eight individual finishes on Friday. Sophomore Alayna Gallegos (Lakeville, MN/Lakeville HS) had a strong showing in the 200 butterfly, placing sixth in a time of 2:10.38. She also added a sixth place time of 4:55.02 in the 400 IM later in the evening. Calvin also placed two in the top eight in the 200 freestyle as junior Kathryn Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Moundsview HS) was seventh (1:59.37) and senior Margaret Rechel (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington HS) eighth (2:00.85). In the 100 breaststroke finals, sophomore Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) took fourth with a season-best and NCAA III B’ cut qualifying time of 1:05.13. She later took fifth in the 50 freestyle with a season-best time of 24.44. In the 100 backstroke, junior Erika Waugh (Berne, IN/South Adams HS) was fifth in a season-best time of 58.82 while senior Kristy Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead HS) was seventh (59.67). In the diving competition, sophomore Lizz Roth (Brighton/Brighton HS) was sixth on the three-meter board with a score of 364.85 while junior Rebecca Mumby (Spring Lake/Spring Lake HS) was seventh (354.15) and freshman Becky Freed (Rochester Hills/Rochester Stoney Creek HS) eighth (343.50). In the 200 freestyle relay, the Calvin quartet of freshman Adrienne Wesselius (Sioux Center, IA/Unity Christian HS), Rookus, Kinzer and Wrobel was third in a time of 1:37.30.

Competing in a field of six teams, the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team is in third place through one night of competition at the Calvin Winter Invitational. The Calvin women’s team has 63 points, trailing Northern Michigan and Grand Valley State. Thursday’s competition included the 1,650 freestyle and 800 freestyle relay. In the 1,650 freestyle, junior Kathryn Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View HS) took fourth in a time of 17:54.35. Calvin’s 800 freestyle relay team of senior Margaret Rechel (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington HS), Wrobel, freshman Megan Schroder (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) and junior Alex Dhaenens (Howell/Howell HS) took seventh in a time of 7:56.04. Calvin’s B’ relay team of junior Erika Waugh (Berne, IN/South Adams HS), senior Elizabeth Schleh (Mount Vernon, WA/Academy West), senior Claire Strunk (Evanston, IL/Evanston Township HS) and junior Lexi Scott (Richmond, IN/Richmond HS) also scored points, placing ninth in 8:04.03. Prelims on Friday morning begin at 10 a.m. with evening finals slated for 6 p.m.

The Calvin mens’ and women’s swimming and diving teams will host the Calvin Winter Invitational this weekend, welcoming teams from around the state and Midwest. The Calvin sports information office caught up with head Calvin swim coach Dan Gelderloos to preview the upcoming Calvin Winter Invitational while also looking back on the season thus far as well as looking ahead. The interview with Gelderloos is available in podcast format at: Dan Gelderloos Interview The Calvin Winter Invitational will begin on Thursday night at 6 p.m. with prelims on Friday set for 10 a.m. and evening finals slated for 6 p.m. The 10 a.m./6 p.m. schedule will also hold on Saturday. All competition will take place inside Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center.

The nationally-ranked Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams picked up dual meet victories over Olivet on Saturday with the women defeating Olivet 199-68 and the men defeating Olivet 161-111. The Calvin women are now 5-3 in dual meet action while the Calvin men are 4-3. Both Calvin teams will now break until December 5, 6 and 7 when they host their own Calvin Invitational at the Venema Aquatic Center.

The Calvin menís and womenís swimming and diving teams hosted non-conference rival Wheaton Saturday afternoon inside the Venema Aquatic Center. In the menís meet, Calvin defeated Wheaton 177-119 while the Calvin women were defeated by the Thunder 166-130. Sophomore Brett Stoughton won three individual events for the Calvin men while sophomore Michaela Rookus was a double-winner for the Calvin women. The Calvin men are now 3-3 in dual meet action while the Calvin women are now 4-3. Both teams return to action next Saturday, hosting Olivet at 1 p.m.

The Calvin menís and womenís swimming and diving teams competed against Division II power Wayne State and NAIA Olivet Nazerene Friday night at Van Noord Arena. The Calvin women split dual meets, falling to Wayne State 184-58 while defeating Olivet Nazarene 122-114. In the menís meet, Wayne State defeated Calvin 161-81 and Olivet Nazarene defeated Calvin 156-71. In the womenís competition, junior Kathryn Wrobel (Arden Hills, MN/Mounds View HS) was a winner in the 1,650 freestyle (18:04.90). Sophomore Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) was a close second in the 50 freestyle (24.81) while also placing second in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.67). Senior Margaret Rechel (Worthington, OH/Thomas Worthington HS) also had a strong night, placing fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:02.27) and third in the 100 freestyle (55.71). On the menís side sophomore Johnson Cochran (Mount Vernon, OH/Mount Vernon HS) took second in the 100 breaststroke (58.37) while senior Andrew Mitchell (Iron Mountain/Kingsford HS) was third in the 100 backstroke (54.06). Freshman Brett Stoughton (Centerville, IN/Centerville HS) was third in the 100 butterfly (52.87). Calvin also received strong efforts in the 1,650 freestyle from sophomore Aaron Venema (Grand Haven/Grand Haven HS) with Venema third in 16:45.87 and sophomore Caleb Meindertsma (Annondale, VA/Trinity Christian HS) fourth in 16:58.31. Both Calvin team will host non-conference rival Wheaton on Saturday at 1 p.m. in dual meet action.

ALMA - The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams picked up MIAA dual meet victories at Alma on Saturday. The Calvin men defeated Alma 157.5-84.5 to move to 2-1 on the season while the Calvin women defeated Alma 163-63 to improve to 3-1 on the year. Both teams will now prepare to compete next Friday in a triangular at home with Olivet Nazarene and Wayne State.

The Calvin women are ranked 16th while the Calvin men are also ranked 16th. ROYAL OAK, Mich. Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvinís Johnson Cochran and Michaela Rookus its Athletes of the Week in swimming and diving for meets through October 26. Cochran, a sophomore from Mount Vernon, Ohio (Mount Vernon HS) won both breaststroke events in leading Calvin to an MIAA dual meet win Saturday over Albion. He set an Albion pool record in winning the 100-yard breaststroke in :58.83, and also won the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.46. In addition, Cochran won the 100 breaststroke during a Friday dual meet against Division II Grand Valley State. He is being honored as Athlete of the Week for the first time this season and second time in his career. Rookus, a sophomore from Hudsonville (Hudsonville HS), won three events Saturday in leading the Knights to an MIAA dual meet victory over Albion. She won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:08.68, the 200 breaststroke in 2:32.43 and the 200 individual medley in 2:15.84. One night earlier, Rookus won the 100-yard freestyle in :53.75 and had a season-best :24.64 in the 50 freestyle in a meet against Division II members Grand Valley State and Hillsdale.
