Women’s Swimming and Diving Honored for Academics - Individuals Honored as Well

The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team has been named to the College Swim Coaches Association of America Scholar All-America honor roll list for the spring semester. In order to receive the award, a team must post a 3.10 grade point average or above. The Calvin women’s team also was named to the CSCAA Scholar All-America honor roll list for the fall semester as well. In addition, Calvin had three individuals from its swim program receive individual CSCAA All-America honors as junior Sam Klaasen and freshman Erika Waugh of the women’s team and sophomore Andy Krafft of the men’s team were so honored. In order to receive the award, individuals needed to have posted at least an NCAA III conditional qualifying score and post a 3.50 grade point average.

Determined diver sets goal for 2013

After winning MIAA Most Valuable Diver and posting NCAA qualifying scores in her sophomore and junior year, Samantha Klaasen was hoping for an invitation to dive at the NCAA Championships. Unfortunately, she was not invited to the meet, limited to 22 divers nationwide, this season or last. The disappointment was initially a setback for the Holland (Mich.) Christian graduate but has since turned into motivation to dive stronger in her senior year.

A Look Back at the 2012 MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships

Last month the Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams competed at the MIAA Championships in Holland. The Calvin women’s team recorded 803.5 points to capture its eighth consecutive MIAA title. Meanwhile the Calvin men’s team recorded a school-record 635 points and captured four individual league titles. Calvin student videographer Mike Zaagman has produced a highlight video of the final three days of competition at the league meet.

Calvin Concludes Competition at NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships - Men Finish 26th

Calvin concluded competition at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships on Satuday. In the morning prelims, junior Mark Rushlow (Goshen, IN) took 47th in the 100 freestyle (46.64) while junior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN) placed 21st in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.53). Neither finish was enough to advance to the evening finals however. Calvin did place in the final men’s team standings thanks to a pair of All-America performances by sophomore Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN) in the diving competition. The Calvin men placed 26th with 30 points.

Andrew Krafft Takes Sixth on One-Meter Board at NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Calvin College sophomore Andrew Krafft collected his second All-America certificate of the week and the fourth of his collegiate career Friday night at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships at the IUPUI Natatatorium. Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN) took sixth on the one-meter board with a score of 472.70 points. On Wednesday night, Krafft took second on the three-meter board. A year ago, he was second on the one-meter board and third on the three-meter board. Krafft’s score surpassed his point production one on the one-meter board from lat year’s national meet when he scored 459.0 points to take second.

Rushlow and Counsell Compete - Do Not Advance Out of Prelims at NCAA Championships

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - Mark Rushlow and Elizabeth Counsell both competed for Calvin at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday. Neither individual was able to qualify for the evening finals however. Rushlow (Goshen, IN) competed in the (men’s) 100 butterfly but was unable to advance out of the morning prelims, finishing 19th with a time of 50.07. Counsell (Indianapolis, IN) competed in the (women’s) 200 freestyle prelims and finished 42nd (1:57.74). Action will continue on Friday with Rushlow scheduled to compete in the 100 backstroke where he is seeded 36th (52.06) and Counsell in the 100 breaststroke where she is seeded third (1:03.62). Sophomore Andrew Krafft (Fort Wayne, IN) will also compete in the men’s one-meter diving preliminaries Saturday afternoon.

Rushlow, Kraft and Counsell Qualify for NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships

Two Calvin swimmers and one diver have received invitations to the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships scheduled to be held March 21-24 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Representing the Calvin men’s team will be junior Mark Rushlow and sophomore diver Andrew Kraft. Representing the Calvin women’s team will be junior Elizabeth Counsell. Both swimmers will be traveling to their home state as Rushlow is from Goshen, Indiana (Northridge HS) while Counsell is from Indianapolis (Heritage Christian HS). Kraft is from Fort Wayne, Indiana. He will be making his second straight appearance at the national meet.

Calvin Women’s Swimming and Diving Team Receives Scholar All-America Award

College Swim Coaches Association Scholar All-America Team List

The Calvin College women’s swimming and diving team has received the Scholar All America Team citation from the College Swimming Coaches Association of America for the 2011 fall semester.To be eligible, a team needed to maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a four-point scale.  The Calvin women’s team recorded a 3.23 grade point average. The Knights were one of four five MIAA women’s teams to receive the award as Albion, Hope, Kalamazoo and Olivet were also so honored. The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team is coached by Dan Gelderloos.

Seven from Calvin Named to All-MIAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Team - Klaasen Named Most Valuable

Seven members of the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team have received All-MIAA honors. It marks the second-highest single-season total in Calvin swimming and diving history. Named to the All-MIAA team from Calvin are senior Rachel Bos, juniors Rachel Colasurdo, Stephanie Fox, Elizabeth Counsell, Samantha Klaasen and freshmen Erika Waugh and Kathryn Wrobel. Klaasen headlines the group as she has been named the MIAA’s Most Valuable Diver for the second straight year.

Women’s Swimming & Diving Captures Eighth Straight MIAA Title

Heading into the final night of competition up 112.5 points over its nearest competitor, Calvin looked to hold on for the MIAA Championship. Not only did the Knights hold on to the lead, but the Knights also built up a 150-point advantage en route to a 803.5 point performance and its eighth straight women’s swim and dive title including its 10th in the last 12 years. In the 200 backstroke, Calvin claimed its first individual title of the night as freshman Erika Waugh finished in a NCAA B cut time of 2:06.42. Earlier in the day, Waugh established a new school record in the event with a time of 2:06.29. In the 200 breaststroke, junior Elizabeth Counsell earned another individual title for the Knights and her second of the weekend. Counsell’s time of 2:21.86 was good enough for a NCAA B cut. In the post-meet ceremonies, Calvin junior diver Samantha Klaasen was named the MIAA Most Valuable Diver for the second straight season for her first place performance on the one meter board and second place finish on the three meter board.
