Day One of Calvin Winter Swimming and Diving Invitational Complete

In the first of a three day invitational meet held at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center, the Knights sent out their distance swimmers to compete in some lengthy races against a plethora of worthy opponents.After one day of competition, Grand Valley State leads the men’s standings with 147 points and the women’s standings with 142 points. Calvin is fourth in the women’s standings with 48 points and fourth in the men’s standings with 38 points.

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams will host the first-ever Calvin Winter Invitational December 3-5 at the Venema Aquatic Center. The three-day invitational will include teams from Olivet, Valparaiso, Kalamazoo, Grand Valley State, Alma, Northern Michigan (women), Bowling Green State (women), Michigan State, Hillsdale, Denison (divers only) Trinity, TX (divers only).

Swimming & Diving Teams Fall to Division II Wayne State

In another day of action for the Calvin swim and dive team and despite taking a pair of losses for both men and women’s teams, the Knights swam what coach Dan Gelderloos called their best meet of the year at home against Division II team Wayne State University.
A Saturday event held at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center, the losses pushed Calvin’s season record to 2-2 and 1-3 for the women and men respectively in dual meet action. The women, recently ranked at #5 in the Division III Top 25 poll, fell by a score of 146-92, and the men, who have received votes in the poll but are not ranked in the Top 25, lost by a team score of 164-74.

Collegeswimming.com Division III Top 25 Polls
Collegeswimming.com has released its first Division III Top 25 poll of the year and the Calvin women’s swimming and diving team is ranked fifth. Under the direction of head coach Dan Gelderloos, the Knights are currently 2-1 in dual meet competition. Meanwhile the Calvin men’s swimming and diving team which is 1-2 in dual meet competition is receiving votes in the men’s poll but is not in the top 25. The MIAA includes three men’s teams in the top 25 with Kalamazoo ranked fifth, Hope 18th and Olivet 22nd.
Swimming and Diving Teams Split Dual Meets With Wheaton

The Calvin men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams split non-conference dual meets with visiting Wheaton Saturday afternoon at the Venema Aquatic Center.
In the women’s meet, Calvin defeated the Thunder 154-140 to improve to 1-1 in dual meet action. In the men’s meet, Calvin fell to Wheaton 171-117 to fall to 0-2 on the year.

2009-10 Calvin Women's Swimming & Diving Schedule
The 2009-10 Calvin women’s swimming and diving team will be seeking its sixth consecutive MIAA title including its eighth overall. With four All-MIAA performers from a year ago returning, the Knights have reason to think they will once again be in contention for the league crown.
Returing All-MIAA selections include seniors Emily Roberts (DeKalb, IL/DeKalb HS), Laura Price (Warren, PA/Warren HS), Maggie Vail (Portage/Portage Northern HS) and junior Monica Bressler (Sandusky, OH/Perkins HS).

On the second day of weekend events for Calvin’s Swim and Dive Team, the Knights came out strong Saturday in their first conference home meet of the season. With a great turnout of fans at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center, the un-scored relay meet would show many of the teams where they stand amidst the competition of the MIAA.

On Friday, Calvin’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams were matched up against a tough opponent in cross-town rival Grand Valley State University. The meet, held at Calvin’s Venema Aquatic Center, featured tough losses by both teams.
On the men’s side of things Grand Valley won by a score of 185 to Calvin’s 53. For the women, Grand Valley won by a score of 158 to the Knights’ final tally of 83.

2008-09 Calvin MIAA Academic Honor Roll Listing
A record 10 Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2008-09 academic year. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2008-09 academic year.
Meanwhile 15 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for the fourth straight year.

GRAND RAPIDS—For the second consecutive year, recent Calvin College graduate Cara Van Woerkom has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American. A native of Wyoming, Michigan, and a graduate of Grandville Calvin Christian High School, Van Woerkom has been named an ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team selection in the women’s at-large college division.
