Final Director's Cup Standings
For the 18th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final NCAA III Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings, finishing 15th in the nation in Division III in 2012-13 with a total of 651.0 points. Calvin is one of only six schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level.Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga. Williams won the title as the best athletics program in the nation in Division III by winning with a score of 1,273.75 points. The Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and Learfield Sports to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country, and is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events.

As Elizabeth Counsell looks back on her four years as a student-athlete at Calvin, it’s quite apparent that she has frequently chosen a different road and as the poet Robert Frost so eloquently concluded in his classic poem “The Road Not Taken:” “That has made all the difference.” As a senior at Heritage Christian High School in Indianapolis, Ind., Counsell considered attending a larger in-state university where she would give up her swimming career and focus on being a student.

For the first time since the 1999-2000 academic year, Calvin College has won the outright MIAA Commissioner’s Cup. Calvin finished the year with 216 points, finishing ahead of rival Hope which earned 205 points. At the conclusion of the 2007-08 year, Calvin and Hope shared the Commissioner’s Cup as the two schools tied for first place. Hope had since won the last four outright titles. The MIAA Commissioner’s Cup award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league’s 20 sports for men and women. The final Commissioner’s Cup standings is determined on the basis of each college’s standings in eight of 10 sports for men and eight of 10 sports for women. The Commissioner’s Cup (All-Sports Award) has been presented since 1934-35. Hope has won the award 34 times, followed by Kalamazoo 15, Albion 14, Calvin 9 and Alma 5. In addition, Calvin took first place in the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 102 points, finishing ahead of Hope which tallied 93. Calvin also took first place in the MIAA Women’s All-Sports standings with 114 points, edging Hope by two points. The 2012-13 academic year was an historic one for the Calvin athletics program as it captured an MIAA record 12 conference titles including 10 that were outright league crowns. Calvin competes in 19 of the 20 MIAA-sponsored sports. The Knights do not compete in football.

Learfield Director's Cup Standings Through Winter Season
The winter sports season was recently completed for NCAA Division III athletics and the latest set of Learfield Director’s Cup standings for Division III have been announced. Calvin is ranked ninth in the latest set of standings with 508 points. The Knights garnered 199.5 points during the recent winter sports season. The Learfield Director’sCup is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country. The Learfield Director’s Cup race is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions. Scoring points for Calvin during the winter season were the Calvin women’s basketball team (25 points), men’s basketball (64 points), women’s indoor track and field (47.5 points) and women’s swimming and diving team (63 points). During the fall sports season, Calvin produced 308.5 points as its men’s and women’s soccer teams, volleyball team and men’s and women’s cross country team all scored points. Calvin has now had nine of its 21 varsity sports teams score points in the Director’s Cup chase. The competition will conclude at the end of the spring sports season with a final set of standings set to be released in June.

In Calvin athletics, what was the best play of the year? Who were the male and female newcomers of the year? What was the most exceptional performance in an individual event? Come to the arena on May 8 to find out. On Wednesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the Van Noord Arena, the Calvin C Club welcomes student-athletes, coaches and fans of the Knights to an evening of celebrating Calvin athletics. There will be desserts and refreshments, trophy displays, a “Year in Review” video and the presentation of 13 awards, culminating in the Tiemersma and Beré Awards for female and male athlete of the year. Registration for current Calvin student-athletes is available through their coaches, and registration for all others is available online now! Cost is just $10 for guests (reduced to $5 for current students and C Club members). Business attire is desired.

200 Breaststroke Features Good Counsell at NCAA III Championships - Calvin Finishes 13th as Team

SHENANDOAH, TX - Calvin College senior Elizabeth Counsell capped off her stellar four-year collegiate career with yet another All-America performance and a school record Saturday night at the NCAA III Championships. Competing in her final collegiate event, Counsell took fifth in the 200 breaststroke with a school record time of 2:16.45. Seeded 17th heading into Saturday’s prelims, Counsell ripped off the sixth-fastest time of the morning, recording a school record time of 2:17.81. The time was nearly two seconds faster than her previous school record of 2:19.56. Counsell then found another gear in Saturday’s final to move up one more place and drop another second from her school record set just a few hours earlier. Counsell concludes her Calvin swimming career as a four-time NCAA III All-American, having finished seventh in the 200 breaststroke at the 2010 national meet and then placing second in the 100 breast and fifth in the 200 breast at this week’s national meet while also swimming on Calvin’s eighth place 200 medley relay team this past Wednesday. Counsell’s All-America performance Saturday helped Calvin finish 13th in the final team standings with 82 points.

SHENANDOAH, TX - The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team remains in 11th place at the NCAA III Championships. The Knights have a team total of 68 points with one day of competition left. Senior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) highlighted the evening for Calvin with a national runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in with a season-best time of 1:02.79. Counsell entered the meet seeded seventh in the event but pulled off the third-fastest time of the morning prelims (1:03.40) and then lowered her time again in the evening finals, finishing only behind Amy Spay of Wisconsin-Whitewater (1:00.85). The finish is the best by a Calvin swimmer in the event at the national meet, surpassing the third place finish earned by Emily Roberts in the 100 breaststroke in 2007. It also marks the second individual All-America finish of Counsell’s career at Calvin. She was an All-American in the 200 breaststroke two years ago and will have a chance to swim for honors in that event on Saturday. Counsell was one of two Calvin swimmers to score in the 100 breaststroke Friday night as freshman Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) was 11th in a season-best time of 1:04.20 that was good for a honorable mention All-America berth. In the one-meter diving competition, senior Samanthah Klaasen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took 15th for an honorable mention All-America spot.

SHENANDOAH, TX - The Calvin women’s swimming and diving team continued to pick up points at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships as its 400 medley relay team of seniors Kristy Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead HS), Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS) senior Rachel Colasurdo (Chesapeake, VA/Home Schooled) and freshman Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS) placed 10th in a season-best time of 3:50.78. just missing the school record of 3:50.34. The relay entered the meet seeded 22nd but moved into the consolation finals with a 14th place finish in the morning prelims, clocking in with a time of 3:53.96.The Knights then lopped more than three seconds off their morning swim in the consolation finals Thursday night and moved up four spots in the process. Kinzer highlighted the relay by leading off with a time of 57.71 in the opening backstroke leg which will count as a new school record, surpassing the previous Calvin mark of 58.45 set by Monica Bressler in 2009. The 10th place finish is good for an honorable mention All-America berth. It also places Calvin in 12th place in the team standings with 43 points, just three points behind 11th place Wheaton.

SHENANDOAH, TX - Calvin’s 200 medley relay team struck home for an All-America berth on the first day of competition at the NCAA III Swimming and Diving Championships, finishing eighth with a time of 1:46.02. Calvin qualified for the evening finals with a school record time of 1:45.16 in the morning prelims. Calvin’s relay consisted of senior Kristy Kinzer (Fort Wayne, IN/Homestead HS), senior Elizabeth Counsell (Indianapolis, IN/Heritage Christian HS), senior Rachel Colasurdo (Chesapeake, VA/Home Schooled) and freshman Michaela Rookus (Hudsonville/Hudsonville HS). The finish marks Calvin’s first All-America relay since 2009 and its first in the 200 medley since 2007. Meanwhile, senior Samantha Klaasen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) took home an honorable mention All-America berth in the women’s three-meter diving with a score of 456.75 points that was good for 10th place. With the relay finish and Klaasen’s diving performance, Calvin is in 10th place with 29 points through the first day of competition.
