ROYAL OAK, Mich. †Ė The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvinís Dan Kerr and Nicole Michmerhuizen as its Runners of the Week in cross country for meets through Sept. 9.Kerr, a senior from Petoskey (Petoskey HS), was first across the finish line in leading the Knights to an impressive performance at the MIAA Jamboree Friday at Saint Maryís, posting a time of 25:30 over the 8-kilometer course. Kerr is being honored as Runner of the Week for the second time in his career. Michmerhuizen, a junior from Holland (Holland Christian HS), won the womenís race at the MIAA Jamboree at Saint Maryís Friday, crossing the finish line in a time of 22:01. Her performance led the Knights to a first-place showing at the Jamboree. Michmerhuizen is being honored as Runner of the Week for the first time in her career.

NOTRE DAME, IN - The nationally-ranked Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams came away with a pair of dominating performances at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Saint Mary’s College Friday afternoon. Ranked sixth nationally, the Calvin men’s cross country team took six of the top seven spots to record a first place team score of 17 points, 56 points ahead of second place Hope.On the women’s side, Calvin also dominated as the eighth-ranked Knights recorded a team score of 20 points, 33 points ahead of 17th-ranked Hope. The Calvin women took the top two spots individually including seven of the top nine to cruise to the win.

The Calvin menís and womenís cross country teams have held their spots in the national rankings. In the most recent set of Division III Top 35 rankings released by the United States Cross Country Coaches Association of America this morning, the Calvin menís team is ranked sixth while the Calvin womenís team is ranked eighth. Both teams were ranked in the same positions in last week’s poll. In the first poll of the year Ė released three weeks ago Ė the Calvin menís cross country team was ranked seventh while the Calvin womenís team was ranked 10th.Two weeks ago, both teams took first place at their own Knight Invitational with the Calvin menís team posting a first place total of 30 points and its womenís team collecting a first place score of 34 points. Both teams are in the process of preparing for the MIAA Jamboree on Friday at Saint Maryís College in Notre Dame, Indiana. The men’s race will begin at 5 p.m. with the women’s race to follow at 6 p.m.

(Mascenic Regional HS), finished fifth at the Calvin Invitational with a time of 24:57 over the 8-kilometer course, helping the Knights win the meet with a team score of 30 points. Christiansen is being honored as Runner of the Week for the first time in his career. Penning, a senior from Grand Rapids (Grand Rapids Christian HS), led the Knights to a first-place showing at their invitational with a second-place finish in a time of 17:57 over the 5-kilometer course. Penning is being honored as Runner of the Week for the second time in her career.

The 10th-ranked Calvin womenís cross country team opened its 2012 campaign in strong fashion, powering its way to a first place finish of 34 points at its own Knight Invitational Saturday morning at the Gainey Athletic Complex. With several of its top runners from a year ago having graduated, the Knights have plenty of spots to fill this fall. On Saturday, the holes were filled nicely as the Knights took six of the top 15 points including five of the top 13. Allison Steinbrunner of Ohio Northern won Saturdayís race in a time of 17:42 but Calvin took the next two spots as senior Alyssa Penning was second (17:57) and junior Nicole Michmerhuizen third (18:02) as the duo ran together throughout the race. Freshman McKenzie Diemer stepped up and took ninth individually for Calvin in a time of 18:15 while sophomore Kimby Penning was 12th (18:25), junior Alyssa Oram 13th (18:26) and sophomore Sarah Danner 15th (18:33). Sophomore Lizzy Vannette also had a strong finish, placing 19th (18:37).

The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams are both nationally-ranked in the first Division III Top 35 Poll conducted by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.On the men’s side, Calvin is ranked number-seven. On the women’s side, Calvin is ranked 10th. North Central (IL) is the top-ranked team in the men’s poll while Middlebury (CT) is the top-ranked team in the women’s poll. A year ago the Calvin men’s team finished 11th at the NCAA III Cross Country Championships while the Calvin women’s team finished 13th. Both teams are led by head coach Brian Diemer.

The first set of Division III regional rankings for men’s and women’s cross country have been released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association and both Calvin teams are ranked number-one in their respective regional polls. The Calvin men’s team holds the top spot in the men’s Great Lakes regional rankings with Wabash second. The Calvin women’s team is ranked number-one in the women’s Great Lakes regional rankings followed by Oberlin in second. Both Calvin teams captured Great Lakes Regional titles a year ago. The Calvin teams will open their seasons on September 8 when they host the Knight Invitational at the Gainey Athletic Complex.

With several returning letterwinners, the Calvin women’s cross country team will seek to compete for an MIAA title and another trip to the NCAA III Championships. A year ago, Calvin saw its five-year run as MIAA champions come to an end as rival Hope claimed first place at the MIAA Championships in October. Calvin rebounded two weeks later to claim the Great Lakes Regional title and then finished 13th at the NCAA III Championships one week later. In order to compete for a league title and a trip to the NCAA III Championships, the Knights will need to rely on a strong one-two punch up front and receive solid contributions from a deep group of returning runners.

The Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges present the MIAA Team GPA Award every year. This award recognizes conference athletic teams for performance in the classroom of a 3.3 cumulative GPA or better (on a 4.0 scale). During the recently completed 2011-12 school year, six of Calvinís athletic teams achieved this distinction. Five of Calvinís womenís teams received the MIAA Team GPA Award while the menís cross country team also achieved the feat. Calvinís teams receiving the honor are as follows; womenís cross country team, womenís track and field team, womenís basketball team, womenís volleyball team, womenís tennis team, and menís cross country team.
