A record 10 Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2008-09 academic year. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2008-09 academic year.
Meanwhile 15 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for the fourth straight year.

For the third consecutive year, recent Calvin College graduate Sarah Wittingen has been named an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American. Meanwhile, Calvin junior Jessica Koster has received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America accolades for the first time. Both Calvin student-athletes were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America first team in the women’s track and field/cross country college division.

Four Calvin athletes have received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV honors in the track and field/cross country college division.
On the men’s side, Erik Van Kampen has been so honored while on the women’s side, the Knights have three honorees in seniors Julie Bratt and Sarah Wittingen and junior Jessica Koster. All four individuals now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for Academic All-America consideration.

Calvin College has finished in fifth place in the inaugural Deb Vercauteren Program of the Year Award standings as announced by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.
The NCAA Division III Deb Vercauteren Program of the Year Award is being awarded for the first time to the most outstanding NCAA Division III womenís cross country/track & field program. The award honors the institution that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track & field, and outdoor track & field seasons) based on the institutionís finish at the NCAA Division III Championships.

The Calvin College menís and womenís cross country teams have once again received All-Academic Team honors from the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association of America.

The Calvin women’s cross country team took second at the NCAA III Championships earlier today, posting a team score of 237 points. Top-ranked Middlebury won the crown with 179 points.
The Calvin men’s cross country team took fifth as a team with a cumulative score of 239 points. Top-ranked Cortland State won the national title with 80 points.

In addition, Calvin senior Jed Christiansen has been named Great Lakes Regional Men’s Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season. Christiansen (Greenville, PA/Greenville HS) won his second straight Great Lakes title, clocking 24:44. Two weeks earlier, Christiansen won individual honors in leading Calvin to its 22nd consecutive Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association team title.

WESTERVILLE, OHIO- Cold and wet conditions couldnít slow down Calvinís nationally ranked cross country teams Saturday at Otterbein College. The womenís team, ranked first nationally, won its second straight regional title and the menís team, ranked fourth nationally, won its 13th consecutive regional title.

The Calvin women’s cross country team will head into next week’s NCAA III Great Lakes Regional meet as the nation’s number-one ranked team. The Knights are once again ranked number-one in the latest Division III Top-25 poll released by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
