Calvin Women’s Cross Country Team Ranked Number-One/Men Ranked Seventh

Division III Top 35 Cross Country Rankings

For the second time this year, the Calvin women’s cross country team finds itself holding a share of the top spot in the Division III Top 35 poll conducted by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.

Calvin shares the top spot this week with John Hopkins (MD) which makes it initial entry at the top spot. Previous number-one and defending national champion Middlebury (VT) has dropped down to eighth.  Washington University of St. Louis is ranked third.

Women’s Cross Country Team Sweeps Top Eight Spots And Posts Perfect Score At MIAA Jamboree

HOLLAND – Strong pack running highlighted a day where the Calvin women’s cross country teams took first place at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Hope at the Ridge Point Community Church course.

Calvin’s second-ranked women’s team took the top eight spots – en route to a perfect score of 15 points. Hope took second place in the women’s race with 58 points.

Senior Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) ran away with first place honors with a time of 17:59.

The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams continue to hold high national rankings as the women’s team is ranked second in the latest Division III Top 35 poll released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association while the Calvin men’s team is ranked seventh.

Calvin Cross Country Teams Host Knight Invite - Women First/Men Second

Calvin’s cross country teams took part in the first race of the 2009 season Saturday as they ran in the Knight Invitational at the Gainey Athletic Complex, a course located on the college’s east campus. 

The Knights, an annual national contender in cross country, looked to continue their consistent success in this first race.  The women took first in the meet with a score of 28 points, and the men finished second with 83 points behind Allegheny College which tallied 48 points.

The Calvin women’s cross country shares the top spot in the first set of Division III national rankings released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The Knights share the top spot with defending champion Middlebury (Vt.). The Calvin men’s cross country team is ranked seventh in the men’s national poll with North Central (IL) holding down the top spot.

2009 Calvin Women's Cross Country Schedule

The Calvin women’s cross country team will enter the 2009 season with lofty goals. The Knights are focused on winning MIAA and Great Lakes Regional titles while also contending for their first national title since 1999.

A year ago, Calvin accomplished all three goals, winning MIAA and Great Lakes Regional crowns while finishing second at the NCAA III Championships. The Knights return five individuals who competed at the 2008 NCAA III Championships and also return their alternate runner from that team.

Calvin Teams and Athletes Receive MIAA Academic Honors

2008-09 Calvin MIAA Academic Honor Roll Listing

A record 10 Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2008-09 academic year. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2008-09 academic year.

Meanwhile 15 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll for the fourth straight year.

For the third consecutive year, recent Calvin College graduate Sarah Wittingen has been named an ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American. Meanwhile, Calvin junior Jessica Koster has received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America accolades for the first time. Both Calvin student-athletes were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America first team in the women’s track and field/cross country college division.

ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Teams

Four Calvin athletes have received ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV honors in the track and field/cross country college division.

On the men’s side, Erik Van Kampen has been so honored while on the women’s side, the Knights have three honorees in seniors Julie Bratt and Sarah Wittingen and junior Jessica Koster. All four individuals now advance to the national ballot and are eligible for Academic All-America consideration.
