Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams Capture MIAA Titles

ADRIAN, MI—The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams wrapped up MIAA titles on Saturday with perfect scores of 15 points at the MIAA Championships, hosted by Adrian College. In the men’s race, 16th-ranked Calvin took the top five spots including seven of the top nine. On the women’s side, top-ranked Calvin took the top six spots including seven of the top nine. It marks the first time in MIAA history that both a men’s and women’s team has posted a perfect score at the conference meet in the same year.

The Calvin women’s cross country team remains the top-ranked team in the latest set of Division III Top 35 National Rankings released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The Knights picked up 278 points in the latest poll with Johns Hopkins second with 274 points. The Calvin men’s cross country team also remains ranked 16th in the men’s poll with North Central (IL) continuing to hold the top spot.
Both Calvin cross country teams are preparing for the MIAA Championships which are scheduled to take place on October 31 at Adrian.
Women’s Cross Country Captures Wisconsin-Oshkosh Brook Invitational Title

OSHKOSH, WI – The top-ranked Calvin women’s cross country took first place at the UW-Oshkosh Brooks Invitational on Saturday with a team score of 80 points, finishing 13 points ahead of 10th-ranked Washington University of St. Louis.
Running without top runner Jessica Koster, Calvin still managed to place five runners in the top 25 led by senior Jesi Hale who was eighth in a time of 21:49 followed by senior Liz Smit in 12th (21:57).

The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams hosted the 2009 Michigan Intercollegiates on Friday at the Gainey Athletic Complex. In the men’s race, the University of Michigan took first place with a team score of 32 points. Calvin took fifth with a team score of 178 points. In the women’s race, Grand Valley State took first place with 16 points while Calvin was second with 49 points.

Division III Cross Country National Rankings
For the first time this year, the Calvin women’s cross country is alone in the top spot in the Division III Top 35 rankings released by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.
The Knights received 279 points in this week’s poll to move into sole possession of the top spot. Johns Hopkins (271 points) is now ranked second after sharing the top spot with Calvin a week ago.

NOTRE DAME, IN/ADRIAN, MI – The top-ranked (Division III) Calvin women’s cross country team produced a third place team finish in the (5K) Gold Division of the Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon, recording a team score of 119 points. Second-ranked (Division II) Grand Valley State took first place with 48 points while Division I Dayton took second with 104 points. Eighth-ranked Wisconsin-Oshkosh was the second-best Division III school, placing seventh with 190 points.

Division III Top 35 Cross Country Rankings
For the second time this year, the Calvin women’s cross country team finds itself holding a share of the top spot in the Division III Top 35 poll conducted by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association.
Calvin shares the top spot this week with John Hopkins (MD) which makes it initial entry at the top spot. Previous number-one and defending national champion Middlebury (VT) has dropped down to eighth. Washington University of St. Louis is ranked third.

HOLLAND – Strong pack running highlighted a day where the Calvin women’s cross country teams took first place at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Hope at the Ridge Point Community Church course.
Calvin’s second-ranked women’s team took the top eight spots – en route to a perfect score of 15 points. Hope took second place in the women’s race with 58 points.
Senior Jessica Koster (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) ran away with first place honors with a time of 17:59.

Calvin’s cross country teams took part in the first race of the 2009 season Saturday as they ran in the Knight Invitational at the Gainey Athletic Complex, a course located on the college’s east campus.
The Knights, an annual national contender in cross country, looked to continue their consistent success in this first race. The women took first in the meet with a score of 28 points, and the men finished second with 83 points behind Allegheny College which tallied 48 points.
