MIAA Academic Honor Roll

The 2010-11 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 111 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list. The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2010-11 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom. This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years.
Of the students, 10 are from Calvin.

On the morning of July 16, another edition of the Rival Relay between the Calvin and Hope men’s and women’s cross country teams took place. The event, which dates back to 1919, involves a seven-leg relay that begins in Grand Rapids and concludes in Holland. Both Calvin teams were victorious. Members of the Calvin men’s relay team were Alex VanHaitsma, Steven Haagsma, Job Christiansen, Alex Wrobel, Greg Whittle, Jacob Kuyvenhoven and David VandeBunte Ben Lewis also participated, riding his bike throughout the entire race. Members of the Calvin women’s relay were Alyssa Penning, Kaitlin Diemer, Jodi Hoekstra, Sarah Fennema, Lydia Peterson, Samantha Westveer and Nicole Michermhuizen. Team Spirit Runs Wild Within Calvin Cross Country/Track & Field Programs

By the traditional sense of the term, Track and Field and Cross Country are not team sports.  Outside of relays, the sports are designed for the individual. Talk to members of Calvin’s Cross Country or Track and Field teams, and you’ll likely think otherwise.  In building a tradition-steeped program, the Knights’ have relied heavily on team spirit and encouragement.
