HILLSDALE – The Calvin men’s cross country team finished sixth overall and third among small college schools at the Michigan Intercollegiates hosted by Hillsdale College late Friday afternoon. The annual race included schools from all over the state of Michigan from the NCAA Division I, II and III levels as well as NAIA institutions. Calvin posted a team score of 101 competing against Division II, Division III and NAIA schools with Saginaw Valley State first (50) and Hillsdale third (83). In the women’s 5K race, Calvin was sixth overall and tops amongst Division III schools. Calvin had an overall team score of 173 points. Both Calvin teams will now prepare for the rugged Wisconsin-Oshkosh Invitational next Saturday.

Any freshman athlete at Calvin College has to go through something of an adjustment period. There’s being away from home, a new level of competition, new coaches, a new class schedule, and of course, competing with dining hall food in your stomach. But freshmen on Calvin’s cross country team face an even tougher challenge: figuring out how to tell two sets of identical twins apart. Kristen and Lauren Brink are freshmen on the team, and Rachel Folkema is a junior, her twin Rebekah is a senior.

NOTRE DAME, IN - The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams competed at the prestigious Notre Dame Invitational on Friday afternoon. In the women’s gold division, eighth-ranked Calvin took seventh in the 5K race with a team score of 269 points in a field made up primarily of Division I and Division II opponents. On the men’s side, 22nd-ranked Calvin took 13th in the 8K race with 334 points.In the men’s race, Calvin finished just behind 12th place Wabash (288 points) in a matchup of the top-two ranked teams in the Great Lakes Region. Division II Grand Valley State took the win with 40 points while top-ranked Division III North Central was second with 78 points.

Four Calvin fall sports athletes have received MIAA Athlete of the Week honors in their respective sports. In men’s cross country, freshman Zac Nowicki is the MIAA Men’s Runner of the Week while Calvin senior Nicole Michmerhuizen is the MIAA women’s Runner of the Week. In men’s soccer, Calvin junior Travis Vegter is the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week while in women’s soccer, Calvin sophomore Paige Capel is the MIAA Offensive Player of the Week.

ADRIAN - The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams raced to first place victories at the MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian on Saturday at the Lenawee Christian High School cross country course. In the women’s race, seventh-ranked Calvin took five of the top six spots for a first place score of 19 points, 21 points ahead of Hope. On the men’s side, 13th-ranked Calvin recorded 38 points, 17 points ahead of second place Hope. The Knights had the top finisher in both races as senior Nicole Michmerhuizen (Holland/Holland Christian HS) won the women’s race in 22:13 while freshman Zac Nowicki (Comstock Park/Calvin Christian HS) won the men’s race in 26:06. The MIAA Jamboree is worth one-third of the final MIAA title with the MIAA Championships making up the remaining portion. Calvin is back in action next Friday when it competes at the Notre Dame Invitational.

The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams continue to hold spots in the USTFCCCA Division III Top 25 rankings. In the men’s poll, Calvin is ranked 13th. On the women’s side, Calvin is ranked seventh. The Calvin men were ranked sixth last week while the Calvin women were ranked seventh. Both Calvin teams were idle last week and return to action on Saturday when they compete at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian. The women’s race is set to begin at 11 a.m. with the men’s race to follow at noon.

The Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams have both moved up in the latest set of Division III Top 25 rankings conducted by the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association. The Calvin men are ranked sixth in this week’s poll, up three spots from the last ranking. Meanwhile, the Calvin women are ranked seventh this week, up four spots from the last ranking. Both Calvin teams are in the midst of preparation for an MIAA Jamboree scheduled to take place on September 28 at Adrian College. The MIAA Jamboree will count one-third towards the final MIAA title.

NEW ORLEANS – The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) has named Calvin College freshman Cassie Vince its NCAA Division III National Athlete of the Week for week three of the NCAA cross country season. A native of Amherst, Ohio (Amherst HS), Vince of No. 11 Calvin led the Knights to a decisive team victory at their own Calvin Knight Invitational that included a top-35 team in Case Western and a top-25 NAIA program in No. 9 St. Francis (Ill.). Vince completed the 5K course in 17:40.77, more than 13 seconds ahead of the next-fastest finisher. Behind Vince’s average per-mile pace of 5:41, No. 11 Calvin easily triumphed over St. Francis and Case Western in the team race by 61 points, scoring a first place team score of 40 points. Calvin is back in action on September 28 when it competes at an MIAA Jamboree hosted by Adrian College.

Calvin College hosted the Knight Invitational Saturday morning at the Gainey Athletic Complex. With the top seven runners all finishing in the top 20, the women’s cross country team was able to blow away the competition, finishing with a team score of 40 while second place University of St. Francis totaled 101 points. The Knights were led by freshman Cassie Vince, who also paced the pack. Vince ran a 17:40.2 5k, beating out the second overall finisher from Kenyon by 13 seconds. Senior Nicole Michmerhuizen was next to come in for Calvin, taking fourth overall in 18:08.2.Strong pack running was also key to the Knights success. Calvin placed five more runners in the next 15 spots. Senior Alyssa Oram came in seventh overall in 18:18.3. Junior Rebekah Folkema came in as Calvin’s fourth runner in 13th overall in a time of 18:31.9, while junior Kimby Penning’s time of 18:34.4 was good for 15th overall. Junior Sarah Danner was 17th overall in 18:37.4 while senior Lizzy Vannette was 19th overall in 18:45.8. Junior Kate Ardinger was just behind Vannette, finishing in 18:45.9. Rounding out the top five team scores were Case Western Reserve University with 134, Kenyon College with 136, and DePauw University with 167. The Knights now look forward to the MIAA Jamboree on September 28. The race is to be run at Adrian College.

The Calvin women’s cross country team will head into the 2013 season with a sense of optimism as the Knights bring back a large group of returning letterwinners and a stellar incoming class of first-year runners. The 2012 version of the Knights captured their seventh MIAA title in the last eight years and later qualified for the NCAA III Championships, finishing 18th as a team. Head coach Brian Diemer thinks this year’s Calvin squad - ranked 11th in the Division III preseason Top 25 poll - has the capability of doing even more than last year’s team.< 1 2 3 4 > Last »
