Calvin Finishes 15th in Final Division III Learfield Director’s Cup Standings

Final Director's Cup Standings

For the 18th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final NCAA III Learfield Sports Directors Cup standings, finishing 15th in the nation in Division III in 2012-13 with a total of 651.0 points. Calvin is one of only six schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level.Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga. Williams won the title as the best athletics program in the nation in Division III by winning with a score of 1,273.75 points. The Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and Learfield Sports to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country, and is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events.

Calvin Lands Four on Capital One Academic All-District Cross Country/Track & Field Teams

Four members of the Calvin men’s and women’s cross country and track and field teams have received Division III Capital One Academic All-District honors. Seniors Dan Kerr, Greg Whittle and Job Christiansen have been named to the All-District 6 team on the men’s side while junior Nicole Michmerhuizen has been selected to the All-District 6 team on the women’s side. As members of the all-district teams, all four individuals advance to the national ballot and are eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration.

Shift in Athletic Seasons Pays off For Calvin Distance Runner

It was a shift in athletic seasons that allowed junior Nicole Michmerhuizen to first try cross country as a sophomore at Holland (Mich.) Christian High School. When Michigan moved girls high school basketball from the fall to the winter in 2007, Michmerhuizen, a basketball player in her freshman year, decided to pick up cross country as her fall sport.

Calvin Track and Field Teams Prepare for NCAA III Championships

Eight members of the Calvin track and field program are preparing for NCAA III Championships competition this week at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Representing the men’s team are seniors Dan Kerr (10,000 meters), Matt VanderRoest (10,000 meters and 5,000 meters), and Greg Whittle (1,500 meters), junior Sam Kerk (5,000 meters and 1,500 meters) and sophomore Steven Haagsma (steeplechase). Representing the women’s team are senior Alyssa Penning (steeplechase) and juniors Alyssa Oram (steeplechase) and Nicole Michmerhuizen (10,000 meters and 5,000 meters). Events scheduled for Thursday for Calvin competitors include the men’s and women’s 10,000 meter runs, the prelims of the men’s and women’s steeplechase and the men’s 1,500 meter prelims.

Calvin College Wins MIAA Commissioner’s Cup!!!

For the first time since the 1999-2000 academic year, Calvin College has won the outright MIAA Commissioner’s Cup. Calvin finished the year with 216 points, finishing ahead of rival Hope which earned 205 points. At the conclusion of the 2007-08 year, Calvin and Hope shared the Commissioner’s Cup as the two schools tied for first place. Hope had since won the last four outright titles. The MIAA Commissioner’s Cup award is based on the cumulative performance of each member school in the league’s 20 sports for men and women. The final Commissioner’s Cup standings is determined on the basis of each college’s standings in eight of 10 sports for men and eight of 10 sports for women. The Commissioner’s Cup (All-Sports Award) has been presented since 1934-35. Hope has won the award 34 times, followed by Kalamazoo 15, Albion 14, Calvin 9 and Alma 5. In addition, Calvin took first place in the MIAA Men’s All-Sports standings with 102 points, finishing ahead of Hope which tallied 93. Calvin also took first place in the MIAA Women’s All-Sports standings with 114 points, edging Hope by two points. The 2012-13 academic year was an historic one for the Calvin athletics program as it captured an MIAA record 12 conference titles including 10 that were outright league crowns. Calvin competes in 19 of the 20 MIAA-sponsored sports. The Knights do not compete in football.

Calvin in Ninth Place in Learfield Director’s Cup Standings Through Winter Sports Season

Learfield Director's Cup Standings Through Winter Season

The winter sports season was recently completed for NCAA Division III athletics and the latest set of Learfield Director’s Cup standings for Division III have been announced. Calvin is ranked ninth in the latest set of standings with 508 points. The Knights garnered 199.5 points during the recent winter sports season. The Learfield Director’sCup is based on points earned by teams that compete in NCAA Championship events and is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) to the best overall collegiate athletics program in the country. The Learfield Director’s Cup race is held at the NCAA I, II and III levels and also for NAIA institutions. Scoring points for Calvin during the winter season were the Calvin women’s basketball team (25 points), men’s basketball (64 points), women’s indoor track and field (47.5 points) and women’s swimming and diving team (63 points).  During the fall sports season, Calvin produced 308.5 points as its men’s and women’s soccer teams, volleyball team and men’s and women’s cross country team all scored points. Calvin has now had nine of its 21 varsity sports teams score points in the Director’s Cup chase. The competition will conclude at the end of the spring sports season with a final set of standings set to be released in June.

Calvin C Club to Hold First-Ever Calvin Athletics Awards Night May 8

In Calvin athletics, what was the best play of the year? Who were the male and female newcomers of the year? What was the most exceptional performance in an individual event? Come to the arena on May 8 to find out. On Wednesday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the Van Noord Arena, the Calvin C Club welcomes student-athletes, coaches and fans of the Knights to an evening of celebrating Calvin athletics. There will be desserts and refreshments, trophy displays, a “Year in Review” video and the presentation of 13 awards, culminating in the Tiemersma and Beré Awards for female and male athlete of the year. Registration for current Calvin student-athletes is available through their coaches, and registration for all others is available online now! Cost is just $10 for guests (reduced to $5 for current students and C Club members). Business attire is desired.

Calvin Holds MIAA Commissioner’s Cup Standings Lead

Calvin College holds the lead in the latest set of MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings as well as in the standings for the MIAA Men’s and Women’s All-Sports Awards. Calvin has a first place total of 147 points in the MIAA Commissioner’s Cup standings with Hope second with 126 points. In the men’s individual (all-sports) standings, Calvin has 68 points with Hope second with 56 points. In the women’s individual (all-sports) standings, Calvin has 79 points with Hope second with 70 points. This year, Calvin has captured nine MIAA regular season championships, winning league titles in men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s basketball and women’s swimming and diving.

Calvin to Host 2013 Men’s and Women’s Great Lakes Regional Cross Country Championships

NCAA III Regional Cross Country Announcement

Calvin College has been selected to host the NCAA III Great Lakes Cross Country Regional for men and women next fall. The NCAA announced the eight regional host sites today.The NCAA III Great Lakes Regional meet will be held at the Gainey Athletic Complex on the east side of Calvins’ campus on November 16, 2013. This will mark the second time Calvin will host the regional competition at Gainey. Calvin also hosted the regional meet in 2007.
