Calvin College Graduates Compete at U.S Olympic Marathon Trials

HOUSTON, TX - Three Calvin College graduates ran in the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials on Saturday. In the men’s race, Calvin graduates Paul Petersen and Jed Christiansen finished 55th and 61st respectively. A 2001 Calvin graduate, Petersen took 55th with a time of 2:20.31. A 2010 Calvin graduate, Christiansen finished 61st in a time of 2:21.09. In the women’s race, 2008 Calvin College graduate Christina Overbeck took 108th in a time of 2:48.25. Her race came just over a month after she had qualified for the trials with a time of 2:44.44 at a last-chance meet in Sacramento, California.

Calvin Fourth in Latest Set of Learfield Sports Director’s Cup Standings

The latest set of Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup fall sports standings have been released and after an outstanding fall sports campaign, Calvin College stands in fourth place with 262 points.Washington University (Mo.) leads the standings with 372 points with Middlebury (Vt.) second with 359 points and Amherst (Ma.) third with 264 points. Calvin picked up 90 points from its men’s soccer team that earned a national runner-up berth in the NCAA III Tournament last weekend. Calvin also received 64 points from its volleyball team that reached the Round of 16 of the NCAA III Tournament and 57 points from its men’s cross country team that finished 11th at the NCAA III Championships and 51 points from its women’s cross country team that placed 13th at the NCAA III Championships.

Calvin Alumn Qualifies for U.S. Olympic Women’s Marathon Trials

SACRAMENTO, CA —A third Calvin College graduate has qualified for the U.S. Olympic Marathon trials January 14 in Houston, Texas. Earlier this year, Calvin alumn Paul Petersen (‘01) and Jed Christiansen (‘10) qualified for the men’s trials. This past weekend, 2008 Calvin graduate Christina Overbeck qualified for the women’s trials. Overbeck qualified for the trials with a time of 2:44.24 at the California International Marathon on December 4. The time is an Olympic “B” standard but will allow Overbeck to compete in Houston, Texas next month as “B” standard qualifiers are allowed to compete but must pay their own way to the site of competition. Overbeck was the 15th female finisher and the 125th finisher (male or female) overall in the race.
