Carlia Canto Named MIAA Women’s Golfer of the Week

ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin golfer Carlia Canto its Golfer of the Week in women’s golf for matches and tournaments played through September 11. Canto, a sophomore from Marysville (Port Huron Northern HS), earned medalist honors with an 83 at the North Central, Ill. Invitational and finished third at the Olivet Invitational with rounds of 75 and 83. Her opening round performance at Olivet set an individual Calvin school record and helped the Knights set a team school record with a score of 340. Canto is being honored as Golfer of the Week for the second time in her career.

MARSHALL - The Calvin women’s golf team completed a solid weekend at the Olivet Fall Invitational, placing fifth with a two-day team score of 690 strokes. After shooting a school record score of 340 on Friday, the Knights came back with a 350 on Saturday. Calvin finished two strokes behind Madonna and four strokes ahead of Hope. Host Olivet won the tournament with a team score of 664 strokes while Saint Francis was second (671) and North Central third (673). Sophomore Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) finished third in the final individual standings, carding a round of 83 on Saturday to finish with a two-day total of 158 (75-83). Her Friday round of 75 was a new Calvin single-round record.

MARSHALL - Dodging raindrops, the Calvin women’s golf team had a blazing start to the Olivet Fall Invitational, shooting a school-record round of 340 Friday afternoon to move into third place in a field of 14 teams. Friday’s round was the first of two-days of competition with a second 18-hole round set for Saturday morning. Host Olivet leads the field at 334 while St. Francis of Indiana is second at 335. Calvin sits two strokes ahead of rival Hope (342). Calvin was led on Friday by sophomore Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) led the way for the Knights with a round of 75 that put her in first place in the individual standings. Her round was a school record, surpassing her own mark of 77 set a year ago in a non-conference dual match with Aquinas.

NAPERVILLE, IL - The Calvin women’s golf team finished tied for sixth in a 13-team field at the North Central College Classic Tuesday afternoon with a team score of 375 strokes. Calvin sophomore Carlia Canto (Marysville/Port Huron Northern HS) led all golfers by earning medalist honors with a round of 83. Next for Calvin were freshman Laura Richert (Fort Gratiot/Port Huron Northern HS) with a 96 and junior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) with a 97. Freshman Jaclyn Richert (Fort Gratiot/Port Huron Northern HS) rounded out Calvin’s finishers with a 99.
Calvin Women’s Golf Has Strong Showing in Dual Match With Aquinas

COMSTOCK PARK - Calvin opened its 2011 fall season with a strong showing Thursday afternoon in a non-conference dual match against Aquinas, firing a team score of 353. Aquinas won the match with a score of 344 led by medalist Abby Hagen with a round of 80.
A year ago, Calvin avaeraged just over 380 strokes-per-round as a team. On Thursday, the Knights flashed strong potential with a deep lineup of golfers led by freshman Jackie Richert who fired a round of 80 while sophomore Carlia Canto had an 86 and freshman Lauryn Richert an 89. All three individuals are graduates of Port Huron Northern High School. Junior Rachel Whitaker (Forest Hills Northern HS) was next with a 94 while junior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 95 and freshman Nicole Black (Kenowa Hills HS) had a 97.

As part of the Division III National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Calvin athletics recently joined a Division III partnership with the United States’ Special Olympic Committee, adding a valuable opportunity to the athletic department’s already service-driven outlook. The SAAC is an NCAA organization tiered at the national, conference, and school level. The national, and governing, branch of the organization, seeks to “to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image,” according to the organization’s website.

2011 Calvin Women's Golf Schedule
With four returning letterwinners and an incoming freshmen class of five student-athletes, the Calvin women’s golf team will feature one of its largest rosters in recent memory. Calvin will open its season on September 6 at a tournament hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. The Knights will then compete at the two-day (September 9 and 10) Olivet Invitational and will later compete at the Alma Invitational on September 24. There will also be four league tournaments beginning on September 15 at Trine’s Zollner Golf Course. The 36-hole MIAA (fall) Tournament will take place on October 7 and 8 at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek. The top four teams in the final fall standings will then be eligible to compete for the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament when the league holds three qualifying rounds in the spring.

The 2010-11 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Academic Honor Roll has been announced by Commissioner David Neilson and 111 Calvin scholar-athletes have been named to the list. The honor roll recognizes scholar-athletes who achieve a minimum 3.5 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2010-11 academic year. A student needed to have won a varsity letter in a sport to be eligible. The MIAA Academic Honor Roll program was initiated in 1990 to recognize students at MIAA member colleges who excel both in athletics and in the classroom. This year’s Honor Roll includes several students who achieved the distinction four consecutive years.
Of the students, 10 are from Calvin.
Women’s Golf Concludes Competition at MIAA Spring Tournament

SOUTH BEND, IN - Three members of the Calvin women’s golf team competed at the MIAA spring tournament on Friday and Saturday. The Knights were led by freshman Carlia Canto who had back-to-back rounds of 87. On Friday, sophomore Rachel Whitaker had a round of 96 and came back with a 108 on Saturday. Freshman Ashley Tiefenthal had a round of 100 on Friday and a round of 104 on Saturday.

MARSHALL - The Calvin women’s golf team competed at the MIAA Spring Qualifying Tournament on Thursday at the Medalist Golf Club with Olivet serving as host. Calvin took eighth with a team score of 414 strokes led by freshman Carlia Canto who was tied for 17th individually with a round of 88. Sophomore Rachel Whitaker tied for 36th with a round of 98. Calvin’s remaining two scorers were freshman Ashley Tiefenthal with a 108 and freshman Melissa Shepard with a 120. Regular season league champion Saint Mary’s will host the final two 18-hole rounds which are scheduled for April 29 and April 30 respectively at the Blackthorne Golf Club in Notre Dame, Indiana.
