Calvin Women’s Golf Has Strong Showing in Dual Match With Aquinas

COMSTOCK PARK - Calvin opened its 2011 fall season with a strong showing Thursday afternoon in a non-conference dual match against Aquinas, firing a team score of 353. Aquinas won the match with a score of 344 led by medalist Abby Hagen with a round of 80.
A year ago, Calvin avaeraged just over 380 strokes-per-round as a team. On Thursday, the Knights flashed strong potential with a deep lineup of golfers led by freshman Jackie Richert who fired a round of 80 while sophomore Carlia Canto had an 86 and freshman Lauryn Richert an 89. All three individuals are graduates of Port Huron Northern High School. Junior Rachel Whitaker (Forest Hills Northern HS) was next with a 94 while junior Elise Doezema (Grand Rapids Christian HS) had a 95 and freshman Nicole Black (Kenowa Hills HS) had a 97.
Calvin College Athletics Program to Join Nation-wide Division III Partnership With Special Olympics

As part of the Division III National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Calvin athletics recently joined a Division III partnership with the United States’ Special Olympic Committee, adding a valuable opportunity to the athletic department’s already service-driven outlook. The SAAC is an NCAA organization tiered at the national, conference, and school level. The national, and governing, branch of the organization, seeks to “to enhance the total student-athlete experience by promoting opportunity, protecting student-athlete welfare and fostering a positive student-athlete image,” according to the organization’s website.

With four returning letterwinners and an incoming freshmen class of five student-athletes, the Calvin women’s golf team will feature one of its largest rosters in recent memory. Calvin will open its season on September 6 at a tournament hosted by North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. The Knights will then compete at the two-day (September 9 and 10) Olivet Invitational and will later compete at the Alma Invitational on September 24. There will also be four league tournaments beginning on September 15 at Trine’s Zollner Golf Course. The 36-hole MIAA (fall) Tournament will take place on October 7 and 8 at the Bedford Valley Country Club in Battle Creek. The top four teams in the final fall standings will then be eligible to compete for the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament when the league holds three qualifying rounds in the spring.
