Nine Calvin Teams Receive MIAA Team GPA Award

Nine Calvin College athletics teams have received the MIAA’s Team GPA Award for the recently completed 2010-11 academic year. The award, presented by the Faculty Athletic Representatives of the MIAA member colleges recognizes conference athletic teams who achieved a 3.3 or better grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for the entire 2009-10 academic year. Seven of Calvin’s women’s teams received the MIAA Team GPA Award while the men’s cross country team and men’s golf teams also achieved the feat. Calvin teams that received the honor this year include: the women’s cross country team, women’s soccer team, men’s cross country team, women’s volleyball team, women’s track and field team, women’s tennis team, women’s swimming and diving team, men’s tennis team and women’ basketball team.

Calvin Finishes Fifth in Final Learfield Sports Director’s Cup Standings

For the 16th consecutive year, Calvin has posted a top 25 finish in the final NCAA III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup standings, finishing fifth in the nation in Division III in 2010-11 with a total of 762.25 points. Calvin’s point total and its (placement) finish is its highest-ever in the 16 years of the competition. Calvin is one one of only six schools in the country to finish in the top 25 every year that the competition has been held at the NCAA III level. Joining Calvin in that elite group are Williams, Mass., Amherst, Mass., Middlebury, Vt., the State University of New York at Cortland and Emory, Ga. Williams College, Mass., defended its title as the best athletics program in the nation in Division III by winning its 15th U.S. Sports Academy Directors’ Cup with 1,147 points.

Gabrielse and Boerner Receive Capital One Academic All-District Honors in Track & Field

Two members of the Calvin women’s track and field program have received Capital One Academic All-District honors. Junior Jordan Gabrielse has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District IV first team in the women’s college track and field field/cross country division while senior Rachel Boerner has been named to the Capital One Academic All-District second team. As a member of the first team, Gabrielse advances to the national ballot and is now eligible for Capital One Academic All-America consideration.The college division of the Capital One Academic All-America program includes NCAA II, NCAA III and NAIA schools. The Academic All-District and All-America teams are selected by the College Sports Information Director’s Association of America (CoSIDA). To be eligible for nomination, an individual must be a starter or a key reserve with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30.
