Men’s & Women’s Track & Field Teams Grab Day One Leads at MIAA Field Day

OLIVET - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams have taken day one leads at the 120th MIAA Field Day. The MIAA Field Day is being hosted by Olivet College. On the men’s side, Calvin holds a 17-point lead over Adrian as the Knights have 60 points.
On the women’s side, Calvin has a first place total of 86 points, 15.5 points ahead of second place Hope.The Calvin men are seeking to gain at least a share of the overall MIAA title and in order to do so, will have to take first place at the MIAA Field Day. The Knights were second at the MIAA Jamboree behind Hope last month with the MIAA Jamboree worth one-half of the final league title and the MIAA Field Day the remaining half. The Calvin men have won at least a share of the last 17 MIAA titles. On the women’s side, Calvin is looking to grab its 22nd consecutive MIAA title and its 20th consecutive outright title. The Calvin women took first place at the MIAA Jamboree last month.

Calvin Track and Field Teams Wrap Up Weekend Competition at Hillsdale/Aquinas Meets

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams closed out action on Saturday at the Hillsdale Gina Relays and at the Aquinas College Quad. At Hillsdale on Saturday, the women’s team had a strong day of competition. In the 800 meters, freshman Olivia Butler had a season-best time of 2:17.90 in the 800 meters while freshman teammate Rebekah Folkema was close behind in a time of 2:19.30 and senior Kristen Fletcher on Folkema’s heels with a season-best time of 2:19.69. At the Aquinas College Quad held at Houseman Field on the north side of Grand Rapids, the Calvin men also turned in several strong performances. Sophomore Aaron Meckes took first place in the shot put with a season-best toss of 50-1 3/4 while also winning the discus with a throw of 136-6. Sophomore Kyle Jasperse won the triple jump with a leap of 43-5 while freshman Matt Christians was third in the high jump (6-3 1/4). In addition, sophomore Adam DeYoung won the javelin (136-7) while freshman Calvin Kuyers had a season-best time of 56.12 in the 400 meter hurdles.Both Calvin teams will now prepare for the upcoming MIAA Field Day on May 5 and 6 at Olivet College.
Nick Kramer Shatters Calvin School Record in 5K at Hillsdale Gina Relays

HILLSDALE - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams had a big first day of competition at the Hillsdale Gina Relays on Friday. In the women’s 400 meter hurdles, senior Rachel Boerner posted an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of 1:01.67 that ranks as the fastest time in Division III women’s track and field this spring. In the men’s 5,000 meter run later Friday night, junior Nick Kramer not only posted an NCAA III automatic qualifying time in the 5,000 meters invite run, but also shattered the school record in the race with a time of 14:17.70. Kramer’s time shatters the previous Calvin record of 14:22.56 set by Jed Christiansen in 2009. It is also the fastest time in Division III men’s outdoor track and field this spring in the event.
