Women’s Track and Field Team Captures First Place at Michigan/Indiana Invitational

The Calvin women’s track and field recorded a first place total of 161.5 points on Saturday at the Michigan/Indiana Indoor Track and Field Invitational. Calvin finished 50 points ahead of second place Hope and 50.5 points ahead of third place Adrian. Sophomore Nicole Michmerhuizen got the running portion of the meet off with a bang for the Knights by winning the 5,000 meters with a time of 17:51.57. She was part of a strong distance contingent for Calvin in the meet as senior Jodi Hoekstra won the mile run with a time of 5:04.82.

ALLENDALE – A group of Calvin track and field athletes compete at the Grand Valley State Tuneup Invitational. Notable performances for the Calvin women included sophomore Stephanie Bennett placing ninth in the 200 meters (26.52), junior Kaylea Brase placing 11th in the 800 meters (2:20.88), senior Jodi Hoekstra placing third in the 3,000 meters (10:12.95), freshman Amy Sybesma placing sixth in the high jump (5-0 ¼), senior Laura Sybesma winning the triple jump (34-4), freshman Christina Greating placing seventh in the pole vault (9-10 ¾) and sophomore Hillary Banning placing sixth in the long jump (15-9 ¾) and third in the triple jump (33-3 ¼). On the men’s side, sophomore Matt Christians was second in the high jump (6-5), sophomore Evert Geerlings was seventh in the pole vault (14-2), freshman Jacob Kuyvenhoven placed sixth in the 5,000 meters (15:37.76), freshman Erik Holstege was seventh in the 60 meter hurdles (9:04) and eighth in the long jump (19-8 3/4) while junior Aaron Meckes was fourth in the shot put (51-6 ½).
Calvin will now prepare to host the Michigan/Indiana Invitational next Saturday at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.
Track and Field Action Continues at GVSU Big Meet

ALLENDALE – Action continued at the Grand Valley State big meet on Saturday. Notable performances for the Calvin men’s team included sophomore Sam Kerk placing fifth in the 3,000 meters with a time of 8:39.93.In the men’s shot put, junior Aaron Meckes produced a season-best throw of 53-3 that places him ninth on the NCAA III qualifying list. On the women’s side, sophomore Stephanie Bennett had a solid day, posting a time of 8.20 in the 60 meter dash and a time of 26.70 in the 200 meter dash. Freshman Kate Ardinger also had a strong time of 5:10.97 that was good for 10th place in the mile run.
