MEMPHIS, TN Ė The Calvin menís and womenís track and field teams both had strong starts to their outdoor seasons at the Rhodes College Open Invitational on Saturday. Junior Rachel Boerner led the way with an NCAA III automatic qualifying time of of 1:01.64 in the 400 meter hurdles. The time came just one week after Boerner captured the 400 meter national title at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships.

The Calvin women’s track and field team placed 11th at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships with 18 points. The Knights accomplished the 11th place berth behind two individuals as junior Rachel Boerner captured the national title in the 400 meters with a time of 55.95 while junior Sarah Reasoner was second in the shot put with a throw of 46-4. Senior Jed Christiansen also competed in the men’s 5,000 meters, placing 10th with a time of 15:03.

GREENCASTLE, IN—Calvin College junior Rachel Boerner has advanced to the finals of the women’s 400 meters at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships at DePauw University.
A native of Bergenfield, New Jersey, Boerner posted the fourth-fastest performance out of Friday’s prelims, clocking in with a time of 56.95. Boerner will run in the second of two heats (four individuals in each heat) in Saturday’s finals.

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field program will send three individuals to the NCAA III Indoor Track & Field Championships scheduled to be held March 12 and 13 in Greencastle, Indiana. The national meet will be hosted by DePauw University. Representing the Calvin men will be senior Jed Christiansen in the 5,000 meter run. On the women’s side, junior Sarah Reasoner will compete in the shot put and junior Rachel Boerner will compete in the 400 meters. The Calvin sports information office caught up with Calvin head coach Bret Otte for an audio interview that previews the upcoming national meet and the subsequent outdoor season. KENOSHA, WI - Calvin College junior Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) likely punched her ticket to next week’s NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships with a stellar series of throws in the shot put Friday night at a last-chance (indoor) meet hosted by Carthage College. An (outdoor) All-American a year ago in both the shot put and discus, Reasoner took first place in the shot put with a strong NCAA III provisional qualifying throw of 44-7 1/2 Friday night. Reasoner’s series of throws included marks of 42-4, 43-9, 43-10, 43-5, 44-7 and 44-6. Reasoner’s previous indoor best this winter had been 42-8 3/4.

A group of individuals from the Calvin men’s and women’s cross country teams have received All-Academic accolades from the United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association of America.
The USTFCCCA All-Academic award honors those student-athletes who have succeeded both academically and athletically. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must carry a minimum 3.3 cumulative grade point average and must finish in the top 35 among the field at their respective NCAA regional meet.

ANGOLA, IN—The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Trine Indoor Track and Field Invitational on Saturday. In the men’s competition, Calvin took first with 139.5 points, 29.5 points ahead of Hope. In the women’s competition, Calvin rolled up a first place total of 199 points, 71 points ahead of Hope.

ALLENDALE—The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams posted a pair of NCAA (indoor) provisional qualifying marks Friday night at the Grand Rapids Championshipos hosted by Grand Valley State University.
Both provisional performances came in the women’s competition. Calvin’s first provisional mark came in the women’s shot put as junior Sarah Reasoner (Cambridge, MN) took seventh in the shot put with a provisional mark of 42-8 3/4.
In the distance medley relay, Calvin’s quartet of senior Nicole Farr (Wheaton, IL), junior Rachel Boerner (Bergenfield, NJ), sophomore Kaitlin Diemer (South Christian HS) and senior Elizabeth Smit (Kirkland, WA) took first place with a provisional qualifying tie of 12:04.18.
