Nicole Michmerhuizen Grabs Second Straight All-America Berth - Places Fourth in 3K at NCAAs

LINCOLN, NE - Calvin College senior Nicole Michmerhuizen claimed her second All-America berth in as many days at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships, placing fourth in the 3,000 meters Saturday afternoon with a time of 9:45.22. Saturday’s race marked the first year the NCAA has held the 3,000 meters indoors at its national meet. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Michmerhuizen made good on her first national opportunity in the 3K as well. She entered the race seeded seventh but made an early push to grab the lead and push the pace. Michmerhuizen’s race came one day after she placed second in the 5,000 meters. Her back-to-back All-America efforts helped Calvin finish with 13 points in the team standings and tie for 17th place.

Nicole Michmerhuizen Takes Second in 5K at NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships

LINCOLN, NE - Calvin College senior Nicole Michmerhuizen came up with one of the finest racing performances of her collegiate career Friday night ast the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Nebraska’s Bob DeVaney Sports Complex. The Holland Christian High School graduate took second place in the 5,000 meters with a career-best time of 16:41.26. Lenore Moreno of Luverne University (Ca.) won the race with an NCAA III record time of 16:32.85, breaking the previous NCAA III record by nearly four seconds. Michmerhuizen still has one race to run at the indoor national meet as she will compete in the 3,000 meters Saturday afternoon where she is seeded seventh. The finish by Michmerhuizen gives Calvin eight points in the overall team standings. It is also the third NCAA III All-America performance of her collegiate career. In addition to her back-to-back runner-up berths in the 5K indoors, she was also the 10,000 meter national champion at the 2013 NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships.

Nicole Michmerhuizen Named Recipient of Prestigious NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship

Calvin College senior Nicole Michmerhuizen has added yet another lofty honor to her long list of prestigious accomplishments as a student-athlete. Michmerhuizen was recently named one of the 58 fall sports recipients of an NCAA Postgraduate scholarship. The scholarships were awarded across all three NCAA divisions. A native of Holland and a graduate of Holland Christian High School, Michmerhuizen will receive a one-time, non-renewable scholarship grant of $7,500.00. Michmerhuizen recently decided to attend the University of Michigan to pursue a Ph.D in pharmacology. While in Ann Arbor, she plans to pursue research in biomedical sciences. Michmerhuizen is the ninth NCAA Postgraduate Scholar from Calvin and the first since Missy Smith was so honored in 2006. She is scheduled to compete at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in the 5,000 meter and 3,000 meter runs.

Nicole Michmerhuizen to Represent Calvin Track and Field Teams at NCAA III Indoor Championships

For the second consecutive year, Nicole Michmerhuizen will represent the Calvin track and field program at the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships. A senior out of Holland Christian High School, Michmerhuizen will compete in the women’s 3,000 and 5,000 meter runs. The 3,000 meter competition is a new event at this year’s national championship meet. A year ago, Michmerhuizen took second in the 5,000 meters at the national indoor meet at North Central College. She is seeded seventh in the 3,000 meters (9:45.67) and fifth in the 5,000 meters (17:01.38). The 5,000 meters will take place on Friday evening at 5:50 p.m. (central time) while the 3,000 meters is scheduled to take place at 4:40 p.m. (central time) on Saturday afternoon. The meet will take place place in Lincoln, Nebraska. Nebraska Wesleyan University will serve as the host of the meet. The meet will actually take place at the University of Nebraska’s Bob Devaney Sports Center.

Calvin Track and Field Athletes Compete at Last-Chance Indoor Meets

A small group of track and field athletes competed at last-chance indoor qualifying meets Friday and Saturday in Wisconsin.  On Friday, sophomore Eric Jipping (Canton/Plymouth Christian HS) highlighted the day by unleashing a career-best throw of 53-11 in the shot put at a meet hosted by Carthage College. The throw puts Jipping 17th on the NCAA III indoor nationa list and may put him just outside qualifying for next week’s indoor national meet. The throw was a career-best by nearly a foot-and-a-half however. On Saturday, senior David Vande Bunte (Byron Center/Byron Center HS) closed out his collegiate career with a fifth place time of 15:02.22 in the 5,000 meters at a meet hosted by UW-Stevens Point. Senior Philip Spitzer (Buckley HS) was 10th in 15:39.98. In the women’s, 5,000 meters, junior Paige McGahan (Brighton/Brighton HS) turned in a career-best time of 18:16.55 while junior Sarah Danner (Watkins Glen, NY/Charles Dickerson HS) had a time of 18:21.14.

Calvin Track and Field Teams Claim First Place at Calvin Collegiate Indoor Championships

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams hosted the Calvin Collegiate Indoor Track and Field Championships and both Calvin teams took first place. The Calvin men’s team took first place in a field of nine teams with 180 points while the Calvin women’s team took first place in a field of eight teams with a team score of 203.5 points. In the men’s competition, Calvin took first place in five events and took second in four more in finishing nearly 80 points ahead of Trine University which garnered 104.5 points. On the women’s side, Calvin took first place in five events and placed second or third in several other events to pile up a first place total of 203.5 points, finishing nearly 90 points ahead of second place Hope. A group of Calvin athletes will now compete at last-chance meets next weekend with the intentions of attempting to qualify for the upcoming NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships March 15 and 16 at Nebraska Wesleyan.

Multi-Events Open Calvin Collegiate Indoor Track and Field Championships

The multi-events of the Calvin College Indoor Track and Field Championships began on Friday inside the Spoelhof Fieldhouse Complex. In the women’s five-event pentathlon, freshman Bethany Van Eck took first place with a point total of 2,969 points. She had a time of 9.77 in the 60 meter hurdles followed by a high jump of 5-1 1/4 and a shot put of 27-5 1/2. In the long jump, she went 16-1 3/4 and then clocked a time of 2:40.87 in the 800 meters.Junior Kelley Tuinenga was fourth with 2,643 points while Maria Steblay was fifth (2,348) and Haley Stadnikia sixth (1,582). In the men’s heptathlon, junior Erik Holstege has a first-day total of 2,764 points. He clocked a time of 7.43 in the 60 meter dash, had a season-best jump of 22-3 3/4 in the long jump, heaved the shot put 40-10 1/4 and then went 5-10 3/4 in the high jump. He has three events remaining on Saturday - the 60 meter hurdles, the pole vault and the 1,000 meter dash as he hopes to improve his final point total in a bid for the upcoming NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships. The rest of the competition will also take place on Saturday.

ALLENDALE - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at the Grand Valley State Tuneup Invitational on Friday. Both teams had a number of strong performances. Sophomore Eric Jipping led the charge with a career-best throw of 51-8 1/4 in the shot put that was good for fourth place, surpassing his previous mark by more than a foot. The throw begins to put Jipping into consideration for the national list in the event. Junior Erik Holstege also had a big day,taking sixth in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.67 while also tossing a big throw of 41-8 in the shot put. Holstege will attempt to put his multi-events to work again next Friday and Saturday when he competes in the heptathlon inside Calvin’s Huizenga Tennis and Track Center at the Calvin Championships. Other notables included freshman Andrew Woznick turning in a time of 1:57.96 in the 800 meters, senior David Vande Bunte clocking a career-best time of 4:17.86 in the mile run and junior Josh Ferguson taking fifth (8:35.91) and senior Gabe Gunnink taking sixth (8:38.64) in the 3,000 meter run. On the women’s side, senior Julie Busscher had a strong showing in the 200 meters, taking sixth in a season-best time of 26.04 while junior Kelley Tuinenga had a season-best time of 1:00.88 in the 400 meters. In the 3,000 meters, junior Kate Ardinger was fifth (10:35.64) while junior Kimby Penning was sixth (10:37.19). In the 5,000 meters, junior Sarah Danner had a big night, winning with a time of 18:02.98 while senior Alyssa Oram had a strong third place time of 18:31.65. Senior Hilary Banning was fourth in the triple jump (34-3) while freshman Bethany Van Eck was fifth in the long jump (15-5 1/2) and eighth in the 60 meter hurdles (9.82). Both Calvin teams will now prepare for the Calvin Championships next Friday and Saturday at the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center.

Women’s Track and Field Wins Calvin Relays / Men’s Team Second

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams hosted the Calvin Relays on Saturday inside the Huizenga Tennis and Track Center while competing on the Sturrus Track. The Calvin women’s team took first place with a team score of 190 points with Hope taking second with 15 points, Aquinas third with 129 and Alma fourth with 93. The Calvin men’s team took second with 151 points as Aquinas won with 155 points. Hope was third (103), Spring Arbor fourth (66) and Alma fifth (61).

HILLSDALE - The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field team put together two strong days of competition at the Hillsdale “Wide-Track” Classic on Friday and Saturday. Junior Erik Holstege led the charge on the men’s side by posting a two-day point total of 4, 672 points. The total will put Holstege in contention for a spot in the event for the NCAA III Indoor Track and Field Championships next month. Holstege had the top shot put performance on the heptathlon competitors with a throw of 41-11 1/2 while also recording marks of 21-2 3/4 in the long jump and 5-11 1/2 in the high jump. He also ran 7.30 in the 60 meter dash, was eighth in the 1,000 meter run (3:03.46), second in the 60 meter hurdles (8.52) and 11th in the pole vault (10-8). In the men’s 3,000 meter invitational only race, senior David Vande Bunte took second with an impressive time of 8:33.54. In the open 3,000 meters, junior Steven Haagsma took second (8:47.79) while junior Josh Ferguson was third (8:49.02). In addition, sophomore Jeff Meitler won the men’s open one-mile run with a time of 4:25.30. Sophomore McKenzie Diemer won the women’s open 3,000 meters with a time of 10:33.59 while junior Sarah Danner was second (10:34.54). Freshman Cassie Vince took fifth in the invite only 3,000 meters in a time of 10:01.69. In the women’s open mile run, freshman Kristen Brink took third in a time of 5:47.83. Senior Hilary Banning also took third with an impressive leap of 35-11 in the triple jump.
