Carissa Verkaik Places 13th in High Jump at NCAA III Track and Field Championships

CLAREMONT, CA -Calvin College junior Carissa Verkaik made a strong bid for an All-America berth in the women’s high jump Friday night at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships but came up just short.Competing in her second consecutive national track and field meet, Verkaik placed 13th with a leap of 5-4 1/4 on Friday. The Holland Christian High School graduate had three strong attempts at clearing the bar at 5-5 3/4 (1.67 meters) but just clipped the bar on all three attempts. Three of the top eight competitors (All-Americans) were able to clear the bar at 5-5 3/4 and bowed out at that height. Calvin will now prepare for the final day of competition, slated for Saturday. Scheduled to compete for Calvin on Saturday are junior Greg Whittle in the men’s 1,500 meters, senior Nick Kramer in the men’s steeplechase, junior Alyssa Penning in the women’s steeplechase, Kramer, senior Dan Kerr and junior Matt Vander Roest in the men’s 5,000 meters, senior Jodi Hoekstra and sophomore Nicole Michmerhuizen in the women’s 5,000 meters and junior Aaron Meckes in the men’s shot put.
Dan Kerr Claims All-America Honors in 10,000 Meters at NCAA III Outdoor T & F Championships

CLAREMONT, CA - It was a great opening day for the Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams at the NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at Claremont-Mudd Scripps College. The Calvin men claimed one All-America berth and qualified two individuals for Saturday’s finals. On the women’s side, Calvin also qualified one individual for the final day of competition at the NCAA III Championships.Highlighting the day for Calvin was the performance of senior Dan Kerr. The Petoskey High School graduate claimed All-America honors in the 10,000 meters with a fifth place time of 30:43.69. It marks the second All-America berth of Kerr’s Calvin running career as he was also an NCAA III cross country All-American for Calvin this fall. Kerr is the 11th individual in Calvin men’s track and field history to claim All-America honors in the 10,000 meters. It also marks the 17th time that Calvin had claimed an All-America berth in the men’s 10,000 meters with six individuals claiming All-America honors on more than one occasion.
Calvin Sending 10 to NCAA III Outdoor Track and Field Championships

The Calvin men’s and women’s track and field teams will send a combined 10 athletes to the upcoming NCAA III Track and Field Championships including five from its women’s team and five from its men’s team. The 10 individuals that will represent the Calvin track and field program at the NCAA III Track and Field Championships this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (May 24-26) at Claremont-Scripps College in Claremont, California, include Nick Kramer, Greg Whittle, Matt Vander Roest, Aaron Meckes and Dan Kerr of the men’s team and Carissa Verkaik, Jodi Hoekstra, Nicole Michmerhuizen, Kaitlin Diemer and Alyssa Penning of the women’s team.
