The top-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team suffered its first defeat of the season, falling at second-ranked Hope Friday night by scores of 25-17, 22-25, 22-25, 25-22, 15-7. Calvin (24-1 overall, 12-1 MIAA) held a 21-20 lead in set four but Hope (24-1 overall, 11-1 MIAA) scored five of the final six points and then used the momentum to take control in set five. Serving proved crucial in the match as Calvin committed 15 service errors while Hope came up with 10 service aces. Calvin received 16 kills from sophomore Maggie Kamp, 15 kills from freshman Laura Danhoff and a near triple-double performance from senior setter Megan Rietema. Rietema tallied nine kills, 39 assists and 13 digs. Junior Stacey Kamp chipped in with seven kills while senior Kristen Zietse had 12 digs. The victory by Hope snapped an eight-match losing streak against Calvin and was its first against the Knights since the 2010 MIAA Tournament finals. Calvin will now break until next Wednesday when it hosts Saint Mary’s at 6 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

Calvin improved to 24-0 overall and to 12-0 in the MIAA with a 25-21, 25-13, 25-10 victory over the visiting Thunder of Trine University Tuesday night inside Van Noord Arena. Ranked number-one in the country, Calvin hit .375 as a team and picked up steam as the match went along. Calvin hit .220 in set one but proceeded to hit .469 in set two and .522 in set three. Sophomore Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL/Chicago Christian HS) had 13 kills, 12 digs and a hitting percentage of .478. Freshman Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH/Willard HS) had nine kills, three blocks and a .316 hitting percentage. Juniors Ellie Diepersloot (Madera, CA/Chowchilla HS) and Emily Crowe (Granger, IN/Mishawaka HS) had eight kills apiece. Senior setter Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 31 assists and seven digs. Senior Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian HS) had 14 digs and a pair of service aces. The match sets up a showdown between the top two ranked teams in Division III volleyball Friday night at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse as Calvin will travel to number-two ranked Hope for a 6:30 p.m. match. Hope is currently 23-1 overall with its only loss coming to Calvin back on September 17

Maggie Kamp, a sophomore outside hitter for No. 1 Calvin College, has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week. It was another dominate week for the Knights, notching another five wins, all in straight sets, with four of them coming against teams ranked in the top-15 of the AVCA Coaches Poll. After nailing 14 kills on .520 hitting in the sweep over Olivet, she went on to tally an additional 55 combined kills, 20 digs and 11 blocks in the next four matches over No. 7 Mount Union, No. 13 Wittenberg, No. 6 Elmhurst and No. 15 Chicago. In her final three matches of the week she never hit lower than .400, finishing with a 15-kill performance and a .517 hitting percentage over the Maroons. For the week, the sophomore averaged 4.6 kills, 1.47 digs and one block per set to go along with her .382 hitting percentage. Also of note, in 86 reception attempts she recorded just two errors, which came in one match against Wittenberg. This is the seventh time a student-athlete from Calvin has been named the Sports Imports/AVCA Division III National Player of the Week, with the most recent coming from her sister Rebecca Kamp on September 20, 2011. ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin outside hitter Maggie Kamp its Position Player of the Week in volleyball for matches played through October 13. Kamp, a sophomore from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), slammed 69 kills for an attack percentage of .382 for the week as the Knights remained unbeaten with five consecutive victories. She also added 22 digs and 15 blocks for the week. She had 14 kills, an attack percentage of .520 and four blocks in an MIAA win over Olivet. She also had 15 kills, six digs and three blocks in a sweep of the University of Chicago and 14 kills, eight digs and four blocks in a sweep of Elmhurst, Ill., both at the Midwest Invitational tournament. Kamp is being honored as Player of the Week for the second time this season and third time in her career. Calvin is back in action again on Tuesday night when it hosts the Thunder of Trine University at 6:30 p.m. at Van Noord Arena.

GRAND RAPIDS- The top-ranked Knights beat the University of Chicago in the final match for the Midwest Challenge on Saturday to remain the only undefeated team in Division III; Calvin sweeping Chicago with scores of 25-11, 25-12, 25-16. This was the only match for Chicago that did not last five sets. Calvin opened the day with an impressive 25-14, 25-16, 25-19 victory over sixth-ranked Elmhurst College. A year ago at the same tournament, the Bluejays handed Calvin one of its three losses on the season. Calvin received 14 kills in the win from Maggie Kamp while Ellie Diepersloot had nine kills and Emily Crowe and Megan Rietema six kills apiece. Rietema added 29 assists and seven digs while Maggie Kamp and freshman Laura Danhoff each had one block solo and three block assists. Calvin completed the weekend with a 4-0 record, defeating four nationally-ranked teams along the way. The Knights (23-0) will return to action on Tuesday, October 15 against MIAA opponent Trine at home in the Van Noord Arena, that match will take place at 6:30 p.m.

The top-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball is now the only unbeaten team in Division III. On Friday, Calvin defeated Mount Union and Wittenberg in a pair of three-set matches at the Midwest Challenge. Mount Union and Calvin entered the day as the only two teams in Division III left unbeaten. Ranked seventh nationally, Mount Union suffered an early afternoon defeat to Wittenberg and then fell to Calvin 25-23, 25-22, 25-21 later Friday afternoon. Calvin then toppled 13th-ranked Wittenberg Friday evening by scores of 25-13, 25-15, 25-18. Calvin (21-0) will now turn its attention to a pair of Saturday matches against nationally-ranked foes as the Knights host sixth ranked Elmhurst College (22-3) at 11 a.m. and then meet 15th-ranked University of Chicago (16-5) at 3 p.m. Both matches will be played inside Van Noord Arena.

OLIVET- The number-one ranked Knights won in three straight sets against the Comets of Olivet on Wednesday night with scores of 25-19, 25-8, 25-20. This match took place at the Cutler Event Center on the campus of Olivet College. With the win the Knights improve to 19-0 overall and 11-0 in MIAA conference play. This win making 49 straight wins for Calvin in the conference. The Olivet Comets are now 5-6 in MIAA play and 8-14 overall. Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL; Chicago Christian) led all players with 14 kills and added on 4 blocks. Laura Danhoff (Willard,OH; Willard) followed with 9 kills, 2 blocks and 2 aces from the service line. Junior Emily Crowe (Granger,IN; Mishawaka Penn) led the team with 7 blocks and tacked on 5 kills. Elle Diepersloot (Madera,CA; Chowchilla) also added 5 kills. Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids; Grand Rapids Christian) lead all players with 32 assists she also tallied 4 kills, 3 digs and 3 aces from behind the baseline. Both Elise Biesboer (Elmhurst,IL; Timothy Christian) and Kristen Zietse (Grand Rapids; Grand Rapids Christian) shared the lead in digs both players ended with 8.

The Calvin women’s volleyball team continues to hold the top spot in the AVCA Division III Top 25 poll. The Knights once again received all 48 first place votes in this week’s poll. Rival Hope remains the number-two ranked team in the country. Calvin and Hope will co-host the Midwest Challenge this weekend with four nationally-ranked teams set to face Calvin over the course of the weekend. On Friday, Calvin will face eighth-ranked Mount Union at 4 p.m. and then meet 13th-ranked Wittenberg at 8 p.m. On Saturday, Calvin will face sixth-ranked Elmhurst at 11 a.m. and then meet 15th-ranked Chicago at 3 p.m. All four matches will be played at Van Noord Arena. ROYAL OAK, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin setter Megan Rietema its Specialty Player of the Week in volleyball for matches played through October 6. Rietema, a senior from Grand Rapids (GR Christian HS), dished out 111 assists (11.1 per set) and added 26 digs and 17 kills for the week as the Knights remained unbeaten with three straight victories. She had 10 kills, 42 assists, nine digs and three blocks in a four-set win over Albion, and had 36 assists and eight digs in a sweep of Kalamazoo. Rietema is being honored for the third time this season and 11th time in her career. Calvin will travel to Olivet on Wednesday for a 6:30 p.m. match and will then host the Midwest Challenge on Friday and Saturday which will feature several nationally-ranked teams.

GRAND RAPIDS – The number one ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team took a three set win against the Scots of Alma with scores of 25-10, 25-18, 25-14.
The Knights improved to 18-0 overall and 10-0 in the MIAA with their win Saturday against Alma (4-6 MIAA 9-10 overall) . The win keeps a 48 match win streak alive for the Knights team in conference play. As a team the Knights hit a blazing .370 hitting percentage with 56 digs and four total blocks. Maggie Kamp (Orland Park, IL; Chicago Christian HS) led the team with 12 kills and tacked on two blocks and eight digs. Emily Crowe (Granger, IN; Mishawaka Penn HS) was close behind with 11 kills and a .714 hitting percentage. Ellie Diepersloot (Madera, CA/Chowchilla HS) added 9 kills a long with Freshman Laura Danhoff (Willard, OH; Willard HS) who contributed 7 kills and 2 blocks. Megan Rietema (Grand Rapids, MI; Grand Rapids Christian HS) led all players with 33 assists and also brought 3 kills and 9 digs to the table. Senior libero Kristen Zietse lead all players with 20 digs and Junior Elise Biesboer (Elmhust, IL; Timothy Christian HS) had eight. The Knights return to action on Wednesday October 9th at Olivet. That match will begin at 6:30 p.m.
