Lizzie Kamp and Kelsey Sears Receive MIAA Volleyball Player of the Week Honors

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association has named Calvin middle blocker Lizzie Kamp its Player of the Week and Calvin libero Kelsey Sears its Specialty Player of the Week in volleyball for matches played through November 7.

Kamp, a freshman from Orland Park, Ill. (Chicago Christian HS), had 38 kills for an average of 3.45 per game for the week in leading the Knights to the MIAA tournament title. She had 14 kills in a first-round match against Saint Mary’s and 13 kills in the championship match against Hope. Kamp added 19 digs, including 11 against Hope, and 10 blocks. She is being honored as Player of the Week for the first time in her career.

Volleyball To Face Wittenberg in Great Lakes Regional at Hope College

NCAA III Volleyball Tournament Bracket

The Calvin women’s volleyball team will face Wittenberg University in a first round Great Lakes Regional match at Hope College. The starting time will be announced later this evening. Calvin (27-6) is making its 19th NCAA III Tournament appearance. Wittenberg (24-7) and Calvin played earlier this year at the Wittenberg Border Battle with Wittenberg defeating Calvin in five sets. It will mark the third meeting between Calvin and Wittenberg in the NCAA III Tournament in the last five years. Other first round matches will pit Bluffton (27-5) up against Ohio Northern (27-3), Heidelberg (27-7) up against North Central, IL (34-4) and Hope (30-3) up against Lakeland, WI (23-13). The winner of the Calvin/Wittenberg match will play the winner of the Hope/Lakeland first round match.

Women’s Soccer Receives At-Large NCAA III Tourney Bid - Soccer/VBall Brackets Coming Monday

The Calvin women’s soccer season is not over. On Sunday evening, the Knights were informed that they had received one of 21 at-large (Pool C) bids to the NCAA III Tournament. Women’s Soccer NCAA III Tournament Field Release

The Knights will be making their fifth consecutive trip to the NCAA III Tournament. Calvin’s destination and opponent will be unveiled on Monday morning as will be the case for the men’s soccer and volleyball teams which have earned automatic bids to the NCAA III Tournament.

The Albion women’s soccer team gained the MIAA’s automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament by winning the MIAA Tournament this past Saturday. With Calvin and Albion both receiving bids, it marks the first time since 2005 that the MIAA has sent two teams to the NCAA III women’s soccer tournament when Calvin and Hope were both in the field.

The NCAA III Tournament brackets for men’s/women’s soccer are set to be announced Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. at http://ncaa.com. The Calvin men’s soccer team has secured an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament by winning the MIAA title. The Calvin women’s volleyball team also has earned an automatic bid by winning the MIAA Tournament title.

Calvin Volleyball Players Receive All-MIAA Honors

Four members of the Calvin women’s volleyball team have received All-MIAA Honors. Named to the All-MIAA first team from Calvin are senior Kelsey Sears and sophomore Rebecca Kamp.

Calvin players named to the All-MIAA second team include sophomores Renee DeHaan and Erin Vander Plas.

Calvin Volleyball Goes Cliche’ in MIAA Tournament Championship Victory Over Hope

In its first two meetings, Calvin dropped matches to archrival Hope in the MIAA regular season.  At Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse, the Dutch swept the Knights in three sets.  At the return trip in Calvin’s VanNoord Arena, Calvin dropped the match in five sets, disappointingly dropping the final two sets. 

On Saturday, November 7, the two met in the MIAA championship, with Calvin plagued with injury and sickness the Knights beat the odds and upset the Flying Dutch 15-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-13, who were previously ranked #5 in the country.

Volleyball Team Downs Alma In Three in MIAA Tournament Semis - To Face Hope in MIAA Tournament Final

HOLLAND—The Knights came into tonight’s MIAA tournament matchup with a 6-1 record in MIAA Tournament play against the Alma College Scots.  Calvin lived up to that billing by defeating the Scots (17-13) in three sets 25-23, 25-21, 25-17.  Calvin, now 26-6, will face Hope on Saturday in the MIAA Tournament final.  The Dutch defeated Albion 25-10, 25-10, 25-5 in Friday’s second semifinal match.

Rebecca Kamp Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Volleyball Team

ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Volleyball Teams

Calvin College sophomore Rebecca Kamp has been named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District IV first team in women’s volleyball in the college division. As a member of the all-district first team, Kamp advances to the national ballot and is eligible for ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America consideration.

The college division includes NCAA II and III schools as well as NAIA institutions. The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America program is organized and voted on by the College Sports Information Director’s Association (CoSIDA) of America.

Volleyball Holds Off Saint Mary’s In First Round of MIAA Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS - The 14th ranked Calvin volleyball team played host to Saint Mary’s on Tuesday night in a first round MIAA Tournament match at VanNoord Arena.  The Knights, who are now 25-6 on the season, defeated the Belle’s, who finish their season 9-17, in four sets, 25-11, 21-25, 25-22, 25-23.

Women’s Volleyball Finishes 4-0 at Midwest Challenge and in Second Place in Final MIAA Standings

Calvin completed play at the Midwest Challenge with a 4-0 record, defeating Saint Mary’s and Hanover in a pair of three-set matches on Saturday at Calvin’s Van Noord Arena. The victory over Saint Mary’s also served as a conference match, allowing the Knights to finish 14-2 in the final league standings, good for a second place conference finish. Calvin will host Saint Mary’s again on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. in a first round MIAA Tournament match.

GRAND RAPIDS—Rebounding from a disappointing loss to Hope on Wednesday, the Knight’s strong defense and powerful attack pushed Calvin past Olivet in the 2009 Midwest Challenge.  Calvin swept Olivet in three sets, winning 25-14, 25-12, 25-14.

Calvin (22-6 overall, 13-2 MIAA) dominated the Comets at the net, putting up a 12-4 advantage in the block column as well as 42-18 number in kills.  Sophomore Rebecca Kamp credited 14 of Calvin’s kills to her own name, doing so with a remarkably efficient .500 kill percentage.
