HOLLAND - As the fall weather continues to get colder and conference tournaments take place across the country, it becomes a lot more vital for a sports team to maintain a healthy roster. After having dealt with some illness issues in the middle of its conference schedule, Calvin’s volleyball team is healthy once again as the Knights make their way through the end of the season MIAA Tournament. Ranked 7th in the nation, Calvin will play in Holland for the MIAA title Saturday against Hope after defeating Alma in the semifinals. One key player that is back after having missed a stretch of three weeks this season, junior Rebecca Kamp, now gives this team an added dimension as the Knights transition into tournament play.

HOLLAND - The seventh-ranked Calvin volleyball team advanced to the MIAA Tournament finals with a 25-23, 25-16, 20-25, 25-19 victory over Alma Friday night in the MIAA Tournament semifinals at Hope’s DeVos Fieldhouse. Calvin will face host Hope in Saturday’s final at 4 p.m. Hope defeated Kalamazoo in Friday’s second semifinal match. Calvin’s victory over Alma was its third of the year over the Scots but took significantly more effort than Calvin’s three-set sweep over Alma this past Saturday at Van Noord Arena. Alma accumulated 68 digs in the match and forced Calvin to dig down deep to gain the win. Calvin trailed 6-1 in the fourth set but then went on a 15-5 scoring run to reverse the momentum and move on for the clinching fourth set win. Junior Erin VanderPlas had a season-high 16 kills and a .343 attack percentage for the Knights while junior Rebecca Kamp also had 16 kills. Sophomore Lizzie Kamp had 13 kills and 11 digs and junior Renee DeHaan eight kills and seven block assists. Freshman Mean Rietema had 48 assists and junior Kelly Peterson 18 digs. Saturday’s Calvin/Hope winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA III Tournament next week.
