Volleyball Opens NCAA III Tournament Play With 25-21, 25-19, 25-14 Victory Over Otterbein

SPRINGFIELD, OH - The 10th-ranked Calvin women’s volleyball team advanced to the second round of the NCAA III Tournament with a 25-21, 25-19, 25-14 first round victory over Otterbein College Thursday afternoon on the campus of Wittenberg University. Playing in its 20th NCAA III Tournament including its seventh straight, Calvin used strong blocking to stymie Otterbein’s offensive attack. Calvin finished with 15 total blocks including three solos from freshman Megan Rietema and two solos from junior Rebecca Kamp. Otterbein finished with a -.044 hitting percentage while Calvin hit at a .342 clip. With the win, Calvin advances to the second round to face either Heidelberg or Greenville College at 3:30 p.m. Friday afternoon at Wittenberg’s Pam Evans Smith Arena.

Volleyball Receives Bid to NCAA III Tournament - To Face Otterbein in Regional Hosted by Wittenberg

The women’s volleyball team has received its 20th bid to the NCAA III Tournament. The Knights were selected as an at-large (Pool C) selection earlier today and will travel to an eight-team NCAA III Regional hosted by Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Calvin (26-4) will face Otterbein (26-6) in a first round match on Thursday at 12:30 p.m. The Calvin/Otterbein winner will advance to the second round Friday and will face the winner of a first round match between Heidelberg (32-5) and Greenville (26-5). Other first round matches have Hope (26-4) facing the University of Chicago (30-12) and Ohio Northern (19-12) facing host Wittenberg (30-2). In 19 prior trips to the NCAA III Tournament, Calvin has fashioned a won-loss record of 20-21 with one national runner-up finish and two fourth place finishes. Calvin will be facing Otterbein for the first time in NCAA III Tournament play. Calvin will be making its seventh consecutive NCAA III Tournament appearance - all under the watch of current head coach Amber Warners. Start times for Thursday’s first round matches will be announced later.

Rebecca Kamp Named MIAA MVP - Megan Rietema Named MIAA Freshman of The Year

The 2010 All-MIAA volleyball teams were announced at the conclusion of the MIAA Tournament Saturday afternoon and several Calvin players were honored. Junior Rebecca Kamp highlights the lead of Calvin honorees as she has been named the 2010 MIAA Most Valuable Player. She is joined on the All-MIAA first team from Calvin by younger sister Lizzie Kamp and freshman Megan Rietema. Rietema has also been named the MIAA’s Freshman of the Year. In addition, junior middle-blocker Renee DeHaan has been named to the All-MIAA second team.
